Chapter 458: Kindness and Death
“I am sorry,” Ariana pushed herself off the bed. “I didn’t know when I fell asleep.”
Nicolai stared at her eyes. Even though Ari had killed someone, her eyes held a certain warmth in them. She still held the innocence and elegance to herself. How? Nicolai had no idea.
His mother had once said to him that the second a person killed another human, he or she lost a part of their soul. That no matter how heartless someone became, the act of killing someone would ruin them in more than one way.
Even he agreed because the more people he killed, the more Nicolai felt he was becoming more and more inhuman.
However, there was something about Ari which was different from the rest. Despite taking a life, she was still the same.
Either she had too much kindness and warmth —
His eyes dimmed as he finished the thought.
Or this was the only remaining warmth and kindness in her heart. She couldn’t possibly lose any more than that.
He smiled at her and said, “Nothing better than an after-murder nap, eh Pallas?” he placed his hand on her forehead before saying, “It seems like you are doing better than I expected. At least you did not develop fever due to the scare you received.”
But he still asked, “How are you feeling?”
Ari parted her lips to reply but then her nose picked up the scent of blood, and she looked at his hands. The cuff of his sleeves was tainted with blood. The red spots were yet to dry up.
Nicolai — he killed someone.
She raised her head and met Nicolai’s gaze. Though she did not question him out loud, her eyes were filled with silent questions.
“I will tell you later,” he said to her as he helped her up from the bed. “First you need to eat something. You look dead on your feet.”
Ari shook her head and said to him, “I don’t think I can eat anything.” Especially meat. She would feel sick at the thought of even putting a bite of steak or chicken in her mouth.
She could even hear the gurgling noise of blood gushing out of Mrs Harlow’s body. It was really a terrifying feeling.
Nicolai steered her out of the room and said to her, “You need all the strength that you need. Disposing of a body is not as easy as you think, there is a lot of work involved in it, and you can’t do it on an empty stomach,” he glanced at Ari who seemed dubious and scoffed, “What do you think that it is that easy to clear off traces and disposing a body?”
Ari pursed her lips before shaking her head. In less than a few hours, she had turned into a criminal from an innocent woman, who was now running from the police and clearing murder traces.
It was bad enough that she had killed someone, but now she was working on disposing of the body as well.
She replied, “I didn’t.”
“It’s good that you didn’t because It’s not as simple,” Nicolai pulled her down the stairs before heading to the kitchen. He pulled out a rip and heat Mac and cheese box aka the premade meal from the cabinet and then placed it inside the microwave.
Once it was done, he pulled it out and set it in front of Ari. “Eat. You need to help me with the cleaning up of this body. The less people know about it, the better.”
“There is no need to starve yourself for a woman who wanted to kill you.”
“I am not trying to starve myself,” Ari sighed as she picked up the fork from the table. “It’s not every day that I kill someone and bury them.”
Nicolai chuckled. He sat down on the chair opposite Ari before saying to her, “You will get used to it.” Wanting to get into her skin for a reaction, he said to her, “If we were not rushing, we could have celebrated this new adventurous turn of your life. I don’t know how to tell you how touched I am with your attempt to learn more about my life.”
Ari shook her head as she picked up a forkful of Mac and cheese before saying, “How did you get blood on your clothes?” The blood was too fresh to belong to Mrs Harlow.
“Hmm? You should be asking when I don’t have blood on my clothes,” Nicolai changed the topic as he knew that if he were to tell the truth, it would weigh on Ari’s conscience even more. “There are some things that should remain hidden.”
“Are there?” Ari blinked her eyes and questioned. “As far as I know, we are partners in crime.”
Nicolai’s eyes lit up with a hint of amusement as he leaned forward and Ari stayed where she was without pulling away from him.
“Yes, we are. But I would like it if you relied on me rather than sharing my secrets. It’s not that I don’t trust you but the secrets that I hold might make you run for the hills.” He winked at her once he finished speaking.

He wanted to protect her as much as possible. The last thing he wanted was for Ari to be filled with another wave of guilt.
Ari parted her lips to say something but then thought against it and said, “Thank you for helping me, Nicolai.”
No matter what and how they got together— he was willing to help her and that all mattered to Ari.
Nicolai was stunned when he heard Ari thank him. This was the first time he heard someone say thank you to him for burying a body.
She was really — one of a kind.
“There is no need to thank me,” Nicolai chuckled as he pinched her cheek. “You better prepare yourself, don’t throw up later on. It can happen for the first time,” He teased her and when he saw her clenching her fists as if seriously preparing herself, Nicolai couldn’t help but chuckle.
