Chapter 462: Interrogation
Ariana felt her heart jump by leaps and bounds. However, on the surface, she pretended to be worried and concerned, “Missing? Are you sure officers? My mother has the habit of leaving the house without telling anyone. She has done this many times.”
“I am afraid that this time around, however, the situation is a bit more serious,” said Robert with a solemn expression. “We went to the apartment where she has been living for the past few days and we found out that your mother never returned last night.”
He paused before asking the obvious question that must have been playing in his mind for a while now, “Did you talk or see your mother yesterday evening?”
Ariana had spent the entire night going through her own little interrogation last night in her mind. Thus, now that this question was put forth in front of her, she was rather calm. She said to the man, “No. I didn’t see her last night.”
Indeed she did not see her mother. After all, Mrs Harlow was not her mother. So she wasn’t exactly lying to her.
“Are you very sure that you did not see her?” Rupert pressed with a suspicious look in his eyes. “The neighbours told us that you had quite a troublesome relationship with your family.”
“Officer, every child has some problem with their parents at some point. Some have small ones while some have bigger ones but that doesn’t mean that all the children in the world are going around killing their parents, right?” Ari said to the man while trying her best to pretend as if she was not losing her mind.
After she finished speaking she tried to divert the minds of the officers and said, “Did you find my elder sister? I am sure that if my mother did not return she must be with Ariel.”
“After all, the two of them have gotten along very well.”
The officers thought the same thing but the problem here was that even Ariel seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth as if she never existed.
And with Mrs Harlow’s sudden disappearance, they couldn’t help but wonder if there was a sort of foul play going on behind the scenes.
One of the officers said to Ari, “Do you know anything else, Doctor Harlow? It’s not common for two people of the same family to disappear together. We cannot reach your sister and we cannot find your mother either. No matter how we look at it, the situation is rather suspicious.”
Ari shook her head. “I understand what you are trying to say, officers but I truly have no idea. My mother and sister have never been close to me as you already know. So if they had something planned or were being targeted, I don’t think I will know with our relationship.”
This was the truth as well. Ari did not know with whom Mrs Harlow had been involved, she knew that there was a man named Roman but other than that she knew nothing about that man.
“I see,” Rober sighed and said to her, “Thank you for your cooperation, Miss Harlow. We will be taking our leave but in case you find anything, do let us know.”
Ari nodded with a smile and waited for the two men to leave. Once they were gone, she slowly sat down on the small stool. Fortunately, the two men did not bombard her with questions as she had expected, but at the same time, it made her worried as she knew that the two of them might still be suspicious of her.
“You alright?” Millie asked her and Ariana nodded in response with a smile on her face.
The two of them stayed in the ward for the rest of the treatment. Neither of them spoke, while Ari handed Millie her medicine, the woman read all about the paintings and the painters in the mediaeval times.
As she flipped the page of the magazine, the door of the ward was pushed open. Ari raised her head and looked at the guest and upon seeing who it was her expression cooled by a lot of degrees.
It was Penelope.
The woman was dressed in a periwinkle blue dress with matching heels and her hair was styled in waves with a small braid-like headband on top of her head.
“You are here, Doctor Harlow?” Penelope offered her a sweet smile while her eyes remained as cold as ever like she was studying something disgusting under the sole of her heels.
“Yes,” Ariana answered in a clipped tone. She did not want to cause unnecessary trouble in Millie’s ward by engaging in a quarrel with Penelope. For her, the condition and well-being of her patient were top priorities as for the rest of the things she truly did not care about.
She studied Penelope with the same distaste before saying, “Are you here to meet with your cousin?”
Having met with the three Ashford brothers, Ari knew that Millie was their cousin, thus she was not really surprised to see Penelope.
Just a bit annoyed as she had a feeling that the woman was not here to see Millie but was instead using her as a shield for something else.
“Of course,” Penelope smiled at her as if she had no hard feelings towards her before walking inside the room. She glanced at Millie lightly before saying to Ari, “I have been so busy with my parents insisting that I need to stay with them for a while longer and taking me on all sorts of trips that I couldn’t find the time to come and see Millie.”
She glanced at Ariana with a knowing look before saying, “You must understand the feeling right, Doctor Harlow? After all, no one can love their child more than their parents. It just so happens that my parents love me exceptionally too much.”
She taunted Ariana for not being loved by her parents without using direct words.
