Chapter 463: Finding her real identity?
Ari raised a brow. She smiled and said in a calm voice, “Indeed the love of parents is something that only the fortunate get. It is funny, however, that many fail to appreciate it.”
With her words, Ari belittled Penelope right back which caused the woman to stare at her with a cold look on her face.
However, a second later Penelope hitched her lips in a smile before saying to her, “You are right, some really do not appreciate the value of their parents’ love. But what can be said about it? After all, children as fortunate as me have the love of parents in abundance. Only those who receive it in the same amount as beggars would receive pennies would think of appreciating it.” As she talked she walked over to Millie and peered down at her canvas before furrowing her brows as she could not understand what the girl was trying to draw.
She remarked, “I thought your hospital was supposed to be helping my cousin get better and not support her in this madness.”
Ari raised a brow as she turned to look at the canvas before politely saying to Penelope, “You think anything that is against the norms set by others is madness?”
Penelope raised her head and looked at her with a smile. She said in a soft voice, “Not necessarily bad but a person is simply wasting time by going against the rules and norms set by others. Why bother? When you can live your life which was given to you by your fate.”
Seeing that Ari simply raised a brow and handed Millie her medicine without paying any attention to her, Penelope was annoyed.
However, she did not dare to lose her temper with Ari. Her eyes flickered to Ari’s chest as if she could see her heart beating beneath the layers of skin.
She wished she could tear her heart out here and now but Penelope restrained herself. Her brothers were already eyeing her like vultures. The smallest mistake and they would nip and tear off the flesh of her bones if she was to make another mistake, one that would disclose Ari’s identity.
What was more, Penelope disliked Ari with a passion. She was too much like Kaylyn Ashford, kind and pure-hearted. Even the way she spoke was too much like her mother. Ariana’s nature made her uncomfortable. She held all the qualities that Penelope didn’t, which was like a constant reminder that the two of them were in the wrong place.
She wished she had Ari’s kindness but no matter how much she tried— Penelope couldn’t bring the kindness from within. She could fake it but she could never mimic the same kindness as Ari.
It almost drove her mad.
“Thank you for your kind words. But I believe that the lord only helps those who help themselves, if I sit still and wait for a million-dollar paycheck to suddenly be cleared off in my bank account, I don’t think that it will work,” Ari said to the woman without taking offence. “You should try it as well, maybe if you realise the joy of earning something on your own, your values might change, Miss Penelope.”
Penelope clenched her fingers, even though she knew that Ari was only saying this without knowing anything, her words hit a nerve that Penelope had been avoiding.
She rubbed the tips of her fingers before saying, “I doubt I would need to do that, as my parents would provide me with just about anything that I want. Including the man, I am chasing and wish to pursue.” She reminded Ari while fishing for the reaction that she wanted from the woman.
Ari already knew what the woman was trying to do. She stated, “Whats yours will always return to you, however, if you try to take things that do not belong to you, I am afraid that you might end up losing even what belonged to you.”
Ari only said those words to Penelope because she was speaking from her experience. Back then she married Noah because she wanted him to love her just the way he loved Ariel, she thought that she could make him believe her and forget about Ariel.
In the end, reality slapped her hard on the face.
Penelope’s face turned stiff, she looked at Ari with an appraising gaze. It was as if she was trying to deduce whether or not Ari knew something for the woman was speaking things which hit too close to home.
While eyeing the woman warily, Penelope said to her, “I should get going now.” She came to get some answers from Ariana about what and where she went with Nicolai but with how Ari was turning the tables on her, Penelope knew that it was impossible for her to find out anything.
Ari watched Penelope walk away from the ward. As the sound of the woman’s footsteps receded, she turned to look at Millie before saying, “Did she truly come to see you?”
Penelope did not even say a word to Millie from the second she stepped inside the ward!
“I don’t know,” Millie replied. It didn’t bother her, as she hoped that Penelope would stay away from her at all times. Back then when she returned home after getting kidnapped, Millie had not forgotten how Penelope had used her kidnapping incident to make her parents adore her more.
With Penelope gone and Millie done with her medicine, Ari returned to the office which belonged to Aiden, as she stepped inside the office, a male nurse came over and tapped on the surface of the door.
“Miss Ari,” he greeted her with a smile on his face. “Is Miss Penelope gone?”
“She is,” Ari nodded as she raised her head and asked the male nurse, “Is something the matter?”
“Yes, her blood report came and I was asked to bring it to Doctor Aiden but it seems like he is busy, can you take it?”
