Chapter 475: Parents’ lookout
“Do you even know what being in the closet means, Nicolai?” Ari was speechless. As she thought that man truly spoke without thinking, what in the world did he mean by those words?
“I do. Though it’s usually used when someone is hiding their sexuality, it’s not really different when it comes to you, is it?” Nicolai remarked with a smirk. “I mean you have shoved me inside your closet like a dirty little secret, it breaks my heart whenever I see you acting so formal with me in public when you call my name so passionately—”
“Mister de Luca!” Ari hissed at the man while looking around the banquet hall with a flustered expression. She truly had to give it to Nicolai, he knew how to grind her nerves in the worst possible manner.
However, Ari tried to keep herself in control. After all, she could not allow this man to make a fool out of herself in front of others.
Mister Garner who was talking to his good friend noticed Ari being troubled by Nicolai. When he saw that the woman whom he had set his eyes upon was being bothered by a thug-like man, he stepped forward; however, as soon as Nicolai caught his gaze, the man narrowed his eyes on him.
Mister Garner, who had accumulated the courage to go and save the damsel in distress, immediately lowered his gaze and turned around on his feet.
“Someone you know?” Nicolai turned to look at Ari once he sent the man whose eyes were locked on Ari’s bosom packing. He would have loved to gouge the eyes of the man but that would lead him to get grounded.
And yeah, his mother did ground him when he acted too out of the line.
Nicolai didn’t mind being grounded but if he was to stay away from Ari for a week or two who knows which bastard might sweep right in between them?
“He is the husband of my neighbour,” Ari replied. She had only seen Mister Garner a few times at the apartment when she went to throw trash. So, Ari didn’t think that he counted as someone whom she knew.
“Your neighbour? The one who looks like a bad and misshapen result of an unfortunate experiment?” Nicolai didn’t remember the woman but he did remember her actions and invitation to her bed the last time he met with her.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Ari truly was left speechless by the man. What did he mean by those words? Though she did admit that Arabella did look a bit weird, there was no need to call her a ‘misshapen’ result.
“She appears to be a troublesome and quite jealous woman. On top of that, the man whom she had married appeared to be a pest… a bothersome one at that. And you know I hate bothersome things,” Nicolai took a sip of his wine while staring at Ari who was holding a fruit punch in her hands now. “You need to squash them before they cause you trouble, you know?”
The last time Nicolai met with Arabella he sensed her prejudice against Ariana at once. That woman had no value of her own but she loved blaming others. He had also picked up on the interest that Mister Garner was showing to Ariana.
“W…well, unfortunately, I am not a mafia prince, Nicolai. I cannot just punch someone in the face without worrying about the consequences of my actions,” Ari stated, staring into Nicolai’s red eyes.
‘What a fierce gaze,’ thought Nicolai while looking at her he stated with a smile, “You can be a mafia princess, if you want. All you have to do is to broaden your horizons.”
“Are you proposing to me?” Ari asked with a raise of her brow and Nicolai furrowed his brow before saying, “Do you need a ring on your finger for something like that?” Because of the failed marriage between his parents he did not believe in the concept of marriage.
And even though he wanted Ari to be with him, he had never thought of marrying her.
Ari inhaled heavily before turning to look away from the man. She replied, “Yes. It might not matter to you but I do, so unless you have plans to marry me — or something close to that, please don’t throw around such words carelessly. It would make me misunderstand.”
As she finished speaking, she turned on her feet and walked away leaving Nicolai to continue standing where he was.
“Marriage huh?” he muttered as he raised the glass in his hand and drowned the rest of the wine.
On the other side at the corner of the room, Kaylyn Ashford was looking at Ariana who had walked away from Nicolai with a look of disbelief on her face.
Earlier she had walked over because she saw Nicolai and wanted to talk with him a little about how his mother was doing – but she never expected to see a woman so similar to her with the eyes of her husband’s!
The woman resembled the child she had in her mind when she was pregnant with a daughter.
“H–Honey! Did you … did you see that woman?” Kaylyn turned to look at her husband, Theodore.
“I did,” Theodore was just as stunned as his wife. It was one thing that the woman looked like his wife but it was another completely different matter that she shared the same eyes as him.
Even if he was blind in one eye, he could see himself and Kaylyn in the woman who just walked away.
“Should we– go and talk with her?” Kaylyn asked tentatively. Ever since she saw the woman, a sort of panic gripped her like she couldn’t lose her.
Theodore also wanted to talk with the young woman but he said in a light voice, “Wait for a while–” he was still speaking when he saw Mateo walk over to the young woman with a smile on his face.
