Chapter 477: Mayhem
“Excuse me?” Mrs Nelson couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She looked at Nicolai as if the man had gone crazy, as Zena was about to marry Noah. Mrs Mia had thought that Nicolai would start treating her well but why was the man still so hostile towards her?
“You heard me,” Nicolai said to her with a sweet smile. “You think kissing another woman while being married to someone else is a small matter, that’s pretty generous of you. I think I will send a few women to your husband, as long as he only kisses and doesn’t go any further, it’s alright right?”
“Nicolai–”
“It’s Mister de Luca for you, Mrs Nelson,” Nicolai said to the woman interrupting her in the middle. He liked being called Nico and Nicolai by only those who were close to him or by whom he took as his close aides.
Mrs Nelson felt her cheek burn, even though Nicolai had not slapped her in the face, she felt as if he had done quite a similar thing to that for she was embarrassed in front of everyone.
How could he say such a thing?
She parted her lips to say something but was interrupted by Mrs Baker who said to Nicolai, “Mister de Luca, I know that you are quite a gentleman when it comes to saving a few damsels in distress but a woman ought to forgive a few things.”
“Marriage is a grave matter, and as women are the ones who are in charge of keeping their marriage on track—they cannot let their ego and pride come in the way of their happy marriage. Quarrels and fights are something that happens between every married couple. How would the world work if everyone started to deal with matters which could have been dealt with by mere conversation by ending their relationship instead?”
As she spoke she turned to Leila and said to her, “Isn’t that right, Lei?”
Leila raised her head with a startled expression, she looked around not knowing what to say. But she didn’t have to as Nicolai chuckled softly, interrupting the stiff and awkward atmosphere.
Nicolai brought the glass of whiskey to his lips and sipped the golden liquid. He then said to Mrs Baker, “I think the world will work perfectly. There is a reason why the world works fine in the first place, Mrs Baker. It’s because everything is all about give and take. Do you think that the world would work if it’s all about giving?”
“Only fools would think that it’s fine to just keep giving without receiving anything. I respect those women who know when to stop and end things without losing themselves. Because sometimes when women don’t know where the limits lie, they become wrinkly, hideous and short-tempered like the witches in the kid show.”
Though he never insulted directly, Mrs Baker and Mrs Nelson seemed to have understood everything. The two women glared at him before Mrs Baker turned to Leila.
She dropped all pretence before asking Leila, “Lei, this old woman will be a tad bit direct with you. I think that you might have cottoned on to the thoughts that I and your mother have regarding your marriage.”
Leila stiffened. She knew that this was coming, in the past it was Ryan who had always stopped his mother but now–she raised her head and looked at Ryan who was smirking down at her. As if he knew that he was going to get what he wanted like she had no other way out!
Suddenly, Leila felt stuffy because she had a feeling that it was Ryan who had asked his mother to do this — maybe it was him who was behind this question to be brought up.
And Mrs Baker as well. Why did she have to bring it up in front of so many people?
Leila turned to look at her mother, Mrs Kelly who seemed just as stunned as her and heaved a sigh of relief. At least her mother had not agreed with Mrs Baker regarding this matter.
“Mrs Baker, I am thankful but I would like to talk about it later on,” Leila didn’t want to bring up the past which she had buried or to show how broken she was in ways that no man would ever accept her.
“But Lei, I think this is just the perfect opportunity to do it,” Mrs Baker continued to insist. Her son was not getting any younger and she could no longer hold on anymore, the Baker family might be a reputable family but she was still not satisfied with what she had.
She wanted to stand on par with Mrs Nelson and the Nelson family which was why she needed the Kelly family’s shares and stocks.
With a sweet smile on her lips, she said to Mrs Kelly and Leila, “If you agree then we will announce the good news to everyone in the party, isn’t this exciting? In fact, I have even discussed with your mother about your wedding with Ryan, you wouldn’t want us to be disappointed right?”
“That’s right, Lei,” Ryan straightened up in his seat like a predator who had finally cornered his prey. “You wouldn’t want our parents to be disappointed right, after all, they have been waiting for this day for ages.”
So what if this woman had ignored him and refused to talk to him? In the end, didn’t she still belong to him?
Leila felt her hands turn clammy. There was only one thing that she had feared in this life to happen and that was to let her parents down. They loved her so much and in return, they had asked her to only uphold their head and name up – how was she going to –
A soft hand held hers and Leila raised her head to look at Ari who was staring at Mrs Baker with a cold look in her eyes.
“It’s alright, Lei,” Ari told her and even though she was just accused by Mrs Baker of being a shameful woman, she was smiling with pride.
