Chapter 480: Dear Mother, useful death.
In the darkness of the night, there lay a cremation centre. It was old and dingy, and because the building was hidden in the far end of the fields, she did not notice it.
Something clicked inside Penelope’s head as she noticed the cremation centre. And the more she looked at it, the more theories started to bubble and forth in her head.
“They must have come here to bury that woman,” Penelope knew that Mrs Harlow was missing and even though she knew that the woman was her mother, she refused to call her as one.
For Penelope didn’t wish to admit that she was related to a woman as disgusting as Mrs Harlow.
However, as much as she looked down on that woman –Penelope was overjoyed when she thought of how Mrs Harlow might just become the key to her successful marriage to Nicolai.
“At least she proved herself useful for something,” harrumphed Penelope as if the woman who died had no relations with her. She only cared about one thing and that was Nicolai and her only way to escape a life of poverty.
If she was not wrong then the body of Mrs Harlow must have been buried inside this cremation house.
Now, all she needed was to create an alarm which would bring that body to light. But how?
“Think Penelope, think,” she bullied her mind while looking around. And when her gaze fell on a public phone booth, Penelope’s eyes brightened. She turned her car around and headed towards the phone booth.
Once her car came to a stop in front of the phone booth, Penelope stepped out, grimacing slightly when the cold water of the rain hit her bare skin as she was wearing a skirt.
But then she gritted her teeth and rushed to the booth, with her hands up to her head.
And as she stepped inside the booth, Penelope picked up the receiver and dialled a number.
With the receiver placed against her ear, she waited for the call to be answered and when it did, Penelope lowered her voice in an attempt to falsify it and said, “Hello? I would like to report something.”

Half an hour later, a police car came to a stop in front of the cremation building. It was late at night. Two policemen stepped out of the car with umbrellas over their heads as they walked over to the cremation building.
Once the two of them came to a stop in front of the doors of the old building, the policeman on the right tapped on the door and waited for it to be opened.
As the rough sound of his knocking tore through the silence of the night, the in charge of the building pulled open the door. When he saw two policemen standing in front of him, he was surprised and scared.
He asked, “What’s the matter, officers?” Why did these two men come to look for him out of nowhere?
“I am Officer Briggs and this is my colleague, Officer Brown,” Officer Briggs showed off his ID card to the in charge of the building while looking around the old building. “We have received information that there is illegal cremation being done in this building, Mister Craig.”
“Of course not! We are a government-registered hall, there is no way any illegal business is going on here,” the in charge, Mister Craig, denied at once. “It’s a completely fabricated lie, I am telling you. We have never done anything such an illegal cremation.”
“We will be the ones to determine whether it’s true or not, Mister Craig. The witness who complained says that she watched a few people dispose of a body that was not registered to be cremated and there are no records for this cremation either. We are here to see if any bodies in the cremation house are not recorded or if they belong to any missing person. So please let us do our jobs.”
Mister Craig’s eyes widened, “Disposing of a body? I –I have no idea about such a thing, I just started working here.” he was quick to throw the blame as he did not want to ruin his life for a cremation hall.
It was unlucky as it was, that he had to work in this place.
“We can only determine this after the investigation is done, Mister Craig. Please show us the chambers where you usually keep the bodies,” Officer Brown said to the man sternly. “As a complaint has been filed, we have no other choice but to look at this case in hand carefully. After all, it is quite a serious allegation that has been pressed on your head.”
“You cannot just ask me to let you search the cremation hall, officers,” Mister Craig refused to let the officers check the bodies, there were a bunch of bodies that were brought here but he refused to cremate them as their families did not pay the bribe they were supposed to pay.
Now those bodies were rotting in the lockers and he was petty enough to not cremate them. Since his heart was not at peace at the lack of money, why should they have any?
Officer Brigs said coldly, “We have a search warrant, if you do not let us investigate then we will have no other choice but to arrest you for interfering with the work of the police. Now will you let us go inside or are you going to spend the night in the prison?”
Mister Craig did not want to spend the night in the prison. He might as well offer an apology and be done with it once those rotting bodies were found. He gritted his teeth and said, “I never said that you cannot search the cremation hall, officers. I was just worried about the peace of those who are still waiting in the chambers to be cremated.”
He then stepped aside and let the two men walk inside the cremation hall.
‘It seems like I need to look for a new job. Staying here is really unlucky!’ thought the man while following the two officers.
