Chapter 481: Lost and Found
On the way to the chambers where the bodies were kept, Mister Craig wrung his hands nervously. He never expected that one day there would be an investigation in the cremation hall. Now he was counting how many bodies he had left alone or whether the bodies that were illegally stuffed in this cremation hall were dealt with or not.
If he had known that such a thing was going to happen, then he would have burned all the bodies together instead of keeping them in the lockers and hoping for their families to pay money for the ashes of their loved ones.
He was lost in his thoughts when the door of the chambers where the bodies were kept arrived and the two officers stopped for him to open the door.
“Open the doors,” Officer Brown said when he saw that the man was dawdling at the front of the chambers.
Mister Craig opened his mouth to say that he didn’t want to but after seeing the expression on the face of Officer Brown, he knew that there was no escape route left in front of him.
With trembling hands, he looked for the key of the chambers in his pockets before bringing it out and twisting it in the lock. Once the door of the chambers opened, a really foul spread all over the corridor.
The scent of rotting flesh and sulphur was so intense that the two officers had no choice but to raise their hands and cover their noses.
“When was the last time you cleared up the bodies?” Officer Briggs asked while looking at the man with a look of disgust on his face.
Mister Craig also had his mouth and nose covered with a handkerchief tied around his face. He replied in a muffled voice, “It’s not that I didn’t want to clear the bodies, officers. But their families refused to pay, look at the condition of the cremation hall. What else are we supposed to do? We have no funds to run.”
“So we can only wait for the bodies to collect and cremate them together.” Mister Craig tried to shift the blame off his head.
The two officers gave him a hard look before turning on their feet and walking inside the chambers. They looked around the lockers breathing really slowly and said to the man behind them, “Bring the records and show us the lockers which are occupied.”
“Y–Yes.” Mister Craig resigned himself to his fate, as he knew that there was no way he was going to avoid the blame this time.
He rushed to bring the record of the cremation hall which took him three minutes. Once Mister Craig handed the records, Officer Brown said to him, “Go ahead. Tell us which locker belongs to which person.”
“Yes…” Mister Craig nodded as he walked over to the first locker and began speaking, “This one belongs to Mrs Claes and her…”
One by one Mister Craig read the information that was placed on each of the lockers before finally coming to the last one.
“And whose body is kept in here?” Officer Briggs asked.
“No one’s, officers,” replied Mister Craig. “This locker is empty.”
“Is that so,” Officer Brown narrowed his eyes as he placed his hand and knocked on the locker’s door. Instead of making a hollow noise, it made a sort of heavy sound which a container made when it was full.
Officer Brown turned to look at Mister Craig, “Are you lying to us?”
“Of course not! Officers, I will open it for you but I assure you that no one’s in here. I mean — no one was recorded dead during this week and the lockers here are jammed. Certainly the noise was due to that,” as he spoke Mister Craig opened the locker’s door and when the door was opened, a woman’s body was wheeled out.
Mister Craig’s jaw fell to the floor as he realised that the body belonged to the missing woman, Marcia Harlow.
“How is this woman here?” Officer Brown rounded at Mister Craig.
Mister Craig shook his head and said agitatedly, “This is a big mistake, officers. I have nothing to do with her death, I don’t even know this woman. Why would I kill her or help someone kill her? I have no idea how she came here—”
“Shut up!” Officer Briggs shouted at the man before saying to him, “You mean to say as the in charge of the cremation house, you have no idea how this woman came here?”
“I am telling the truth! I am just in charge of this cremation hall and not the guard! How am I supposed to know when and where someone snuck in and then sent this woman inside?” Mister Craig quibbled with agitation written on his face. “You might as well ask the guards what they were doing when this woman was stuffed in this locker, officers.”
“We will question them as well but first, you need to come with us.”
Mister Craig turned frightened when he heard the words of the officers, he blinked his eyes and then said to them, “Are you fucking serious? Why are you dragging me in this matter? I have done nothing wrong.”
“Mind your language and stop resisting. You have the right to appoint a lawyer but till then you are coming with us.”
While Mister Craig and the guards were taken to the police station for questioning the news of their arrest reached Nicolai.
“The body of that woman was found?”

Nicolai was sitting in his office, watching the surveillance recording of the Serpents’ clubs that he had collected after raiding them. He wanted to find this man named Roman and put an end to his saga.
A frown appeared on his face as he questioned, “Do you know how they found her?”
“Apparently someone complained that they saw someone take an unregistered body inside the cremation hall,” replied Kayden.
Nicolai leaned back on the chair before narrowing his eyes and said to Kayden, “Find who was behind it and —make a plan to counter this situation.”
He couldn’t let this matter escalate and burn Ariana.
