Chapter 496: Love (2)
“She is out of danger for the time being,” Doctor Stoll told Nicolai. “I have given her medicine to calm her agitated nerves, she will be fine. Of course, as the medicine is on the heavier side, she will not wake up till the night or tomorrow morning.”
He then turned to look at Theodore and Kaylyn who seemed to be teetering on the edge of asking what was wrong with Ariana but Doctor Stoll interrupted them by saying, “Please do not ask me anything. I do not have the permission of Miss Harlow to disclose her condition to anyone. I believe that you will also not want to betray her trust, right?”
His words blocked every question and query that Kaylyn had; indeed, she did not wish to betray Ariana’s trust when she had not even gained it.
“I will be taking my leave then.” Doctor Stoll turned on his feet and walked out of the room, leaving Ariana with a family who obviously cared for her. As he stepped past Penelope his gaze fell on the wild and chaotic emotions in her eyes.
‘There is something wrong with this woman…’ he thought as Penelope’s eyes were similar to those with unhinged personalities. It could be because of childhood trauma or some other reasons but people like her were problematic.
However, Doctor Stoll did not say anything at that moment because he could feel that all that was lacking was a push and he might tip the scales in the wrong direction.
He turned his head away without saying anything and decided to remind this matter to Aiden as he seemed to be close to the Ashford family. It was better to send Penelope to the hospital for proper treatment or else—
She might become a danger not only to herself but even to others.
Inside the room, Penelope did not know that Doctor Stoll had seen through her mask which she had hardly taken off. She glared at the people who were supposed to love and care for her alone surrounding someone else before turning around on her feet and heading out of the room.
The servants watched Penelope storm past the corridors of the penthouse and dared not to even breathe loudly. Though they had no idea what happened to Penelope, they knew one thing —if they were to get entangled with Penelope when she was in such a raging mood then they would be the ones who would suffer.
Penelope didn’t get a means to channel the rage that she was feeling at that moment and her temper turned even worse. Once she arrived in her bedroom, she walked over to the vanity table and looked at her reflection in the mirror.
Blonde hair and green eyes.
If only she did not have these!
“AHHH!” Penelope screamed as she swept everything that was placed on the vanity table onto the floor, the sound of glass bottles breaking along with the shattering of the mirrors inside the palettes echoed in the room.
“Why didn’t she die?” Penelope banged her fists on the vanity table, her chest moved up and down heavily as she raised her head and glared at her own reflection. “Why did she not die!?” she yelled with her head moving like a mad woman, until the locks of her hair stuck to her lips and face.
On the other side, the Ashford family stayed inside Ari’s room. Nicolai stayed with them as he refused to leave with Aiden.
He stared at Ariana and clenched his jaw.
This cruel woman. She and her damned stubbornness, how could she hide the truth even now? Why did she not let them know?
If only he had known what was causing her so much pain then things would have been different. Maybe he would have treated her better, maybe he wouldn’t have pushed her like he did.
All because he did not know the truth, he ended up treating Ariana like that.
Maybe he could have loved her—
Ah, there it was. The thought that he had been suppressing for months and days. How dare he say those words? How could he even think of loving her? When he did not even know how much she was suffering.
‘But I have always been in love with her,’ thought Nicolai as he gritted his teeth. He had denied it time and time again, but the reason why his body was attracted to hers, how he could not even think of Ariana being with someone else but him… Nicolai knew that he loved her.
It was just that he was foolish enough to ignore the signs even though they were glaring and red.
“No,” Nicolai whispered as he looked at the woman lying on the bed. “As long as you wake up – as long as you open those eyes, I will not ask for anything from you.”
**
I have never really liked men.
In fact, for a while, Ariana found men disgusting. Had it not been her desire to free herself from the shackles of her mother, she would have never thought of Noah as her saviour.
But his tiniest bit of care had caused her to fall for him.
Maybe subconsciously, she knew that only by getting married to another man could she be able to wash the disgusting memories and teachings that were fed to her as a child.

For the sake of chasing her freedom and getting away from that man—
Noah.
She used him as a raft.
She never truly loved him…all she wanted was for that man to accept her and take away that very thing that the masked man wanted from her.
Maybe that’s where the desperation came from.
Perhaps it was only natural that he didn’t love her. Maybe he knew that her love was not free of burdens and unwarranted responsibility.
Not once was she able to live happily.
And that was all because of that man who took everything away from her.
But …
But if she had been protected, maybe she might not be in this situation.
