Chapter 501: Escaping
“You don’t…” Ariana wanted to tell him that there was no need for him to cry. But Nicolai didn’t seem to be listening. He hugged her and continued to speak,
“I know that you think that you are way too smart … and maybe compared to you –I am just an idiot. And yes maybe I am,” Nicolai tightened his hold on her as he stated, “You are indeed way too good for me. That is all true.. But …”
He pulled away from her. His eyes were glistening with unshed tears as he said to her, “But no matter how much of an idiot I am.. I still understand this —”
He raised his hands and placed them on Ariana’s shoulders before saying to her, “You are not a thing, Ariana! Nor are you a piece of property. One that can be replaced or returned just because I found that there was something wrong with you.”
“And there was never—ever anything wrong with you.”
As he finished speaking, Ariana looked at him with a gaze filled with confusion and shock. Seeing her look at him like this, Nicolai pulled away from her at once.
“I am sorry.. Damn it… fucking idiot,” Nicolai slipped away from her. He returned to where he was sitting and then said to her, “I am sorry.. I know that you are suffering, and yet I raised my voice on you. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“Nicolai,” Ariana tried to call the man, but Nicolai shook his head.
“There is no need for you to say that it’s alright. Because it’s not, I should not raise my voice for you. No matter what the situation,” he sighed and then wiped his hands on his face. “It’s just that when I think of how you were this close to dying… I swear I thought that you were going to die, Ariana.”
“That too, right in front of me…” he dropped his hands in his lap and muttered, “And the only memories you would have had of me when you were close to dying, that I used you—I did things that I shouldn’t have done to you.”
“I could have treated you better.. And yet my childish self stopped me from doing it because I couldn’t understand and accept how you were not giving me what I wanted.” Nicolai felt embarrassed and ashamed. He was angry with her just because she refused to give him a title.
And here Ariana was suffering so much when he was not even paying attention.
He should have reigned in that temper of his better, but no—he had to push her like that.
He looked at his hands and muttered, “When I saw you collapsed on the ground, not breathing or moving … I felt so helpless that I can’t even begin to tell you. I had all the means to kill those people but none to save you…”
“That’s why I am glad that you are alright and safe… and yet,” he said, covering his face. “The first thing you told me is that—how can you even talk about yourself like that?”
“How could you think that your condition was a flaw? One that would make me disgusted with you?”
Nicolai dropped his hands and turned to look at Ariana just as the latter reached out to hold his hand. However, as soon as he turned around, Ariana paused in her actions.
“You think that just because you are different from the others, I will find that annoying and leave you like a tainted piece of clothing that I cannot wear again? Do you think that’s all your worth?”
“Even if you cannot bring yourself to trust and respect yourself …you could at least do it for me.”
And before Ariana could say anything, Nicolai sighed and stood up.
“You are not feeling alright, I will get something for you to eat… don’t think too much about it.”
“Nico…”
The door of her bedroom closed and Ariana sighed. She raised her hands and rubbed her temples. Why did he leave like that? He should have at least let her say something.
Ariana was bothered by his attitude, and more than that, she was worried that Nicolai was now walking down a path of no return, which scared her.
She dropped her hand and looked at the leather jacket that was lying on her bed and reached out to hold it.
“He left it here,” she muttered. “Maybe I should return it?”
Who knows if Nicolai will come back to this bedroom? After all, he was just a guest of the Ashford family.
Ariana’s eyebrows furrowed when she thought about the Ashford family. She had no idea what to say or think about Ashford. Though they were her family, Ariana couldn’t bring herself to accept them.
Maybe she was being a bit too cold-hearted, but Ariana was too afraid to have any expectations from them. Not to mention this family raised Penelope.
With that woman living here, she would have to worry about getting stabbed in the chest every night when falling asleep.

She sighed again but stopped thinking as her head started to hurt. She pushed herself to the edge of the bed while hugging the jacket in her arm. Ariana thought of Nicolai’s expression and felt a bit bad. She did not mean to hurt him, nor did she want to make him cry.
“Maybe I will tell him that I didn’t mean it like that?” Arianamused, but as she stepped away from the bed, she suddenly paused. Did she really have to do this? If she was to tell him that she didn’t mean anything that she said, then Nicolai would try to get close to her again
And did she even deserve that? He was a kind man, as impulsive and unfair he was; he was kind to her. Should she repay him for his kindness by depending on him?
The door of the room opened once again, and in stepped Nicolai. He was carrying a tray with a bowl of what seemed like mushroom soup.
He stepped inside the bedroom and then placed the tray on the edge of the bed before saying, “Can you bring me with you the next time you go to visit Doctor Stoll?”
Ariana looked up at him as she shook her head and said to him, “You know that I cannot.”
She did not want him to show the disgusting past which she herself did not wish to remember.
“I see,” Nicolai’s eyes dimmed but he still reached out and touched the top of her head. “I will be leaving now but if you feel sick then you can call me at any time.”
Ariana watched him leave and her brows furrowed even more. She had a feeling that the one thing that she did not want had finally happened.
While Ariana was worrying about Nicolai taking a responsibility that was not his to carry, someone came to a stop at the old apartment where Ariana lived.
Glynn stepped out of the car which she was driving and looked around the parking lot, she looked at the person who was walking towards the entrance of the apartment building and hesitated before calling,
“You there, come here…” She paused before adding, “Please.”
After learning that her actions were incorrect in the past and that she shouldn’t have treated others with unkind intentions, Glynn was trying to get better. Of course, it was not as easy as she thought but she was getting better.
She could now use ‘please’ ; it was too much of a development if one was to ask her.
Mister Garner stiffened. He was working twice as hard as he was in the past because his company was now on the verge of bankruptcy. Though he didn’t hear the reason from the higher ups, he knew that it was most likely due to the Ashford family attacking the company .
It was truly annoying that he ended up getting caught in trouble only because he was married to Arabella. If he had known that the woman was such a troublesome and problematic woman he would have never divorced his ex wife and fallen for that bitch’s tricks!
Now he was neck deep in debts while that woman tried her best to shrink away from the responsibility that she should be taking care of.
And if that was not bad enough, that woman was also refusing to divorce him. Now all day long he had to fight with her while worrying about his job that was getting more and more difficult to keep.
He was thus very annoyed when someone stopped him when he was obviously running late.
But as soon as Mister Garner saw who it was, his annoyance vanished in an instant. The person who called him was actually, Glynn Nelson!
If I can get this woman, then will I still need to worry about my company? Thought Mister Garner as he swiped his hands over his gelled hair and puffed out his chest.
