Chapter 503: Unwanted Animosity
Mrs Mia looked at her daughter as if she had swallowed a fly. She did not wish to believe that Ariana was related to the Ashford family, but something—a nagging feeling at the back of her head told her that it was the truth.
After all, if that woman was not related to the Ashford family, why would someone bother to tell her to keep that woman as suppressed as possible and at the same time threaten her to not let Ariana escape her clutches?
This must be the reason!
Mrs Mia’s expression turned twisted when she thought of the countless possibilities that she could have taken advantage of if she had known the truth!
“Mom,” seeing the look on the face of her mother, Glynn knew that there was something sinister brewing inside that head of her mother. She advised her kindly, “I know that you are upset but don’t do anything, alright? Dad will not like it either as he has many business dealings with the Ashford family.”
“Of course, I will not do anything!” Mrs Mia glared at her daughter. “Do you think that I am an idiot? Of course, I know that your father will be angry with me if I were to do such a stupid thing… If it could even be counted as one given that the woman is destined to be squashed under the feet of people like us.”
At the end of her words, Mrs Mia laughed shrilly. Even though she was burning with envy, she was pretending to be calm and collected.
For the sake of rising through the social circle, she had done one embarrassing thing after another, and yet Ariana, whom she had looked down upon, had gotten hold of something that she could only dream of.
It was such a bitter pill to swallow that Mrs Mia couldn’t help but scrunch her face in disgust and anger.
She however paused and turned to look at Glynn before saying to her, “What about Penelope then? If Ariana is the heiress of the Ashford family..what about that girl?”
“Who knows?” Glynn hadn’t dug too deeply into this matter, as it did not matter to her. She was instead quite happy for Ariana, as she believed that the woman had finally gotten what she deserved.
She turned to look at her mother after picking up the apple from the fruit basket on the dining table. “Maybe she is related to the Harlows? Since Ariana grew up in that family, it only makes sense that Penelope is related to that family.”
“What a shame,” Mrs Mia sighed upon hearing the words of Glynn. She couldn’t help but remark scathingly, “I hope Kaylyn would not be foolish enough to send Penelope away for the sake of Ariana. That woman will simply embarrass their family, as she wasn’t raised to be a heiress.”
“This is a matter of their family, Mom.” Glynn’s lips twitched when he heard her mother address Mrs Ashford as if she and she were the best of friends when the truth was that Mrs Kaylyn had never gotten along with her mother. “There is no need for us to decide for them.”
“Of course, I am not deciding for them,” Mrs Mia spoke in an affronted voice. She touched her bosom and then said in an offended voice, “I am simply making a remark that is the truth. Ariana grew up to be a selfish and self-centred brat who couldn’t even digest a simple thing as her husband lightly pecked another woman. Do you think that with her petty mind, she will ever be able to match the generosity of Penelope?”
“I have met Penelope, and I am sure that if it were her in place of Ariana, she would have thought of saving the reputation of her family and husband, and would have never done something like what Ariana did.”
Glynn didn’t say anything; she simply shook her head and turned on her feet before saying to her mother, “It’s alright if you say these things to me. But make sure that you do not repeat them in front of the Ashford family. I heard that they truly care about Ariana.”
When Mrs Mia heard Glynn say that the Ashford family truly cared for that woman, her heart started to beat wildly in her chest. No, this wouldn’t do–she had to talk to Kaylyn and make her understand that Ariana didn’t deserve her affection.
If that woman recovered from all the teachings that she had given to her, that man would not leave her and her son alone.
And it was bad enough that she was already walking on a thin line with that man for a while now.

On the other side, Ariana had no idea that Mrs Mia was already thinking of a way to discredit her in front of her new family. She had been resting in the bed for the entire day, slowly got to her feet and walked towards the entrance of the room.
As soon as she turned the knob, her eyes met with Penelope who had stepped out of her room as well.
The two of them stared at one another before Penelope scathingly said to Ariana, “Don’t think that you have won just because you are living under the same roof as me.”
She raised her head and haughtily stated, “I am still the heiress of the Ashford family, and the relationship that I have with my mother and father as well as my brothers is not something that a stranger like you can mimic.”
Instead of getting angry, Ariana smiled at the woman and remarked, “If that is the case, then why are you worried?”
“Who says that I am worried?” Penelope snapped as if her tail had been stepped on.
“If you were not worried, then you wouldn’t be saying such things to me,” remarked Ariana calmly. “Like you said, the relationship that you have with your family is not something anyone could mimic… so why the animosity?”
