Chapter 505: How did she turn into this?
“What do you mean by abnormal?” Ariana knew that there was something wrong with Penelope, but she never thought that it was to the point of being called abnormal.
Emil’s expression darkened. He looked at her and said to her, “I know it seems like I am bitching about her, but I am not. I assure you that there is something very wrong with Penelope and even though she has everything under control with our parents believing that she is all sweet and kind… Keon’s canary didn’t die in the hands of a cat.”
“Nor did my mother’s pet kitten, and especially not Mateo’s ex-lover.”
Ariana’s eyes went wide as her mouth fell open.
“She-she killed someone?” Ariana asked, stupefied. She was not a stranger to killing someone, but she only killed a single person and someone who deserved it. Never could she, even in her dreams, kill a person who was innocent, much less an innocent being that couldn’t even cry for help.
“Not directly, no,” Emil shook his head and replied. “My dear foster sister is smart when it comes down to it. Even though Mateo tried his best to trace the murder down to her, the only wrong that Penelope did was to say a few words in her childish arrogance to that woman.”
“But I assure you that she was very much behind the failing brakes.”
Emil still remembered how Mateo had yelled and screamed that day, as the agony that his brother was suffering from was not something that could be suppressed. The pain was simply way beyond that.
However, Penelope had remained calm and cried silently while stating that she did nothing wrong even when he and his brothers knew that she was indeed the one behind it.
Ariana didn’t know what to say regarding the terrifying disclosure. She blinked her eyes and, after a short pause, asked, “How did she become like this?”
How could someone treat the life of a living person so carelessly as if it didn’t even matter or was worth anything?
“She was like this from the beginning, but the final straw was when she turned seven.”
Emil’s gaze darkened as he recalled the day when everything turned bad to worse.
Years ago,
‘Mommy, they say that I am not your daughter. Why can I not punish them?’ A young Penelope stood in front of her mother as she demanded.
She had fired the maids who had looked down on her and joined hands to gossip about her behind her back. It had annoyed Penelope, and she had fired the maids without giving them a chance to say anything in their defence.
‘Penny.’ Kaylyn looked down at her daughter helplessly. ‘I am not saying that you cannot fire them, you are their master and employer, of course you can fire them as you please.’
‘Then why…’
‘But you cannot use sweltering hot poker to whack them on their backs. They were hurt and bleeding; do you even know how hard it was for your father and me to deal with the aftermath?’
‘I was hurt too!’ Penelope did not believe she had done anything wrong. She was hurt by the words of those maids and lost her smile for days. She had scars on her heart compared to her scars; the wounds that she gave to those maids were nothing!
Kaylyn felt her head hurt, and so did her heart. She had taught Penelope to be kind and nice to others, but her daughter had an arrogance that she could not understand or tame.
‘Penny, if you hurt anyone ever again.. Your father and I will send you to boarding school. Just because you have power doesn’t mean that you can abuse it, understand?’
‘Certainly she doesn’t,’ remarked Mateo with a snicker. ‘If she did, then she would have thought twice before hurting those poor maids.’
‘They said I was not your sister!’
‘And they didn’t say anything wrong! They were simply gossiping about the things and rumours that they have heard from others,’ stated Keon coldly. ‘Everyone gossips and talks bad about others; you do the same too. But I don’t see you getting hit by a hot poker by those kids about whom you talk and say bad things.’
‘It’s unfair..’
‘How is it unfair?’ Emil asked naively as he tilted his head to one side. ‘You mean to say only you can talk bad about others and others are supposed to treat you well? That’s not how everything works.’
‘Exactly. I am fourteen years old, and I understand this very well,’ Mateo said with a roll of his eyes. ‘You cannot shut the mouth of the world. It’s better to work harder and get better yourself, but you just have to worry about others instead of working hard on yourself..’
He paused and asked, ‘You skipped the piano lessons once again, did you not? I heard Mrs Salvatore say that you did.’
‘No, I didn’t. Mrs Salvatore is a big, fat liar. She is the one who says that I am not like my brothers. She is a big bad bully!’

‘She always compares me to you.’
‘Penny! Where did you learn such words? And when did you start saying such things towards your elders?’ Kaylyn was stunned. She looked at her daughter and said to her, ‘I didn’t teach you such things? Where did you learn them?’
‘I—’
‘It must be that boy from the Lowell house. I heard that he plays with the boys on the street,’ Emil pointed out.
‘Penny!’
‘Emil! You traitor!’ Penelope shrieked shrilly as she glared at her third brother, but she shrank her neck when she was stared down by her mother. She did not want to be hated by her mother, but she liked Billy.
‘How many times do I have to tell you?’ Kaylyn said to Penelope. ‘Billy is not a good boy; you should stay away from him. Why do you insist on playing with him? If I see you with him again, I will ground you for a week, Penny.’
