Chapter 511: Stripping layers
“Glynn!”
Mrs Mia was shocked and speechless when she heard the words of her daughter. This was how her daughter thought of her? All she wanted was to help her foolish daughter see reason. She could marry anyone in the city; why did she have to choose a pauper
She glared at her daughter and asked her, “Do you even know what you are saying? You are accusing me of something so horrendous when all I have done was to look out for you and make sure that no man would take advantage of you?”
“That no one would harm you. I did what a good mother should do.”
Glynn curled her lips. She couldn’t help but blurt out, “You looking out for me? Mother, if there is anyone from whom I need to be protected, it’s you.” Glynn pointed to her with both hands as she said to her mother with tears streaming down her eyes, “… You locked me up in that punishment room you built for me. You made me write things that no one would ever say to their child.”
“Your curses still ring in my ears every day!” Glynn snapped at her mother. “Whom are you trying to tell that you were only trying to protect me? I didn’t need your protection! I needed protection from you!”
Glynn’s shout rang out in the greenhouse, and Mrs Mia looked at her as if she were about to have a seizure.
“How could you? How could you say such a thing to me?” Mrs Mia puffed up like a balloon before she raised her hand and pointed a well-manicured nail at Glynn. “You say that you needed protection from me? Fine! Go and lick the toes of that pauper! Once you are starving and begging on the street, with bunches of prude and selfish brats clinging onto your tattered clothes!”
“Begging for you to feed them, you will realise that I was speaking the truth!”
Mrs Mia then turned around on her feet and walked away. Her head was held high as she was proud of herself for getting the last word, but in her foolish pride she did not see the flash of resentment and anger in Glynn’s eyes.
On the other hand, Glynn was not the only one who had uncovered the lies that her mother had fed her all along.
Nicolai, who had been looking into the matter without eating and sleeping, arrived at the penthouse that belonged to the Ashford family. When he stepped inside the mansion, there was a frown settled on Mateo’s face.
He was looking at him with an unfriendly look in his eyes and said to Nicolai, “What do you think you are doing, Nico? If one did not know any better, they would think that you are the one who lives here.”
“There is no need to be so angry, Demon’s heir,” Nicolai chuckled as he took off his jacket and handed it to the butler of the Ashford family. “I told you that I had no idea that the curly head, the gossip, and the nerd were related to your big brother. If I did, then I would have never touched them.”
Mateo’s expression turned sombre. He was a man who didn’t dare to go after another woman for years after he lost his lover in that freak of accident, and thus he could never accept and be on friendly terms with Nicolai, who slept with women as if he were changing his clothes.
And even more so when he thought about how Nicolai was entangled with Ari.
He didn’t trust Nicolai. Not because he looked down on Nicolai for sleeping with women but because he was aware of his temper.
And knew just how easy it was for Nicolai to lose it.
He could love a person; of course he could because Nicolai was a human being. But he could also break someone just as easily, and Mateo didn’t want that for his sister.
Ari had suffered enough, and Nicolai was too volatile.
“Why are you here?” Mateo asked as he looked at Nicolai with annoyance flickering in his eyes.
“For dinner?” Nicolai offered as he heard the sound of quarrelling. He raised his head and looked at the second floor before turning to look at Mateo. “Is something happening?”
“Nothing,” Mateo snorted. “My sister and my mother are having a row. My mother asked her to head to a date that she arranged for Penelope. But the latter refused to go, and when she did, she insulted the man for buying her a cheap steak when she only eats the finest and most expensive one.”
“My sister is saying that she wants to marry you, but of course my mother has no plans to marry her to you.”
He looked quite glad over this.
“You speak as if I am dying to marry her. I would rather choke on a bunch of bullets than be together with her,” Nicolai snorted as he turned on his feet and walked over to where the sound of quarrelling was coming from.
He heard Penelope say to her mother,
“…why are you pushing me to marry someone I do not like? Is it because you know that I am not your daughter anymore? Is that why you are so eager to marry me off to just anyone? I might not be your daughter, but I was raised as one; how can I marry any Tom, Dick, and Harry?”
When Nicolai appeared at the threshold of the room, he saw Mister Ashford, Mrs Ashford, along with Penelope and the two Ashford brothers.
Ari was not there because neither of the Ashfords wanted her to be troubled over this small matter.

Mister Ashford turned to look at Nicolai; he frowned upon seeing the man and asked him, “What are you doing here, Nico? Is there something that you wanted to say to Keon?”
“Indeed,” Nicolai nodded. “I wouldn’t have made such a hurried trip if I didn’t have something important. But by all means, you can continue with your conversation for now.”
