Chapter 514: Why is she here?
She turned to look at her family; the disappointment that she was feeling towards them was weighing heavily on her heart. Penelope said to her family, “Look at you all; he is insulting me by saying such words, and you are still not stopping him. Will you only stop him when he’s finished killing me? No matter what, I am your daughter too! You raised me.”

Theodore didn’t wish to take a side, but he also knew Nicolai well enough to understand that he was the kind of man who would not make a move unless he had investigated things thoroughly.

Instead of consoling his daughter, he said to her, “Penny, if you have done what Nicolai just said that you have, then as long as you confess, I promise that I will not punish you too heavily.” He tried to bait her.

But Penelope was not foolish; she knew that her father was lying. She knew that as soon as she confessed the truth, the entire Ashford family would look at her as if she were their enemy.

She shook her head and refused to admit it.

“Why would I do such a thing? Miss Ariana has done nothing to me; in fact, I didn’t even know that she was your daughter!” Penelope looked offended as she stated in an agitated voice.

“Liar,” Emil scoffed as he watched Penelope act and pretend that she was innocent. She had done it so many times that he was now used to her pretence.

“Penny,” Keon rubbed his forehead and said in a tired voice, “You do realise that once the evidence is out in the open, your lies will be exposed, right? So why not take this chance to accept your actions and the things that you have done? So why are you fighting so much?”

“I am telling the truth!” Penelope exclaimed. “He likes her, which is why he is setting me up.”

“I do like Ariana.” Nicolai made no secret of his liking towards Ariana even though he was glared at by four men at the same time. “And because I like her; your words prove themselves contradictory. Why would I pay attention to you and waste my time in setting you up when I can use this time to pursue Ariana?”

“Then why else would you think that I was the one who harmed her? Other than the fact that you have been holding this matter against me ever since I hurt Ariana by mistake. There is no other reason! I have never even approached her after that,” Penelope defensively said. “You have caused me to lie in the hospital because of that incident but I never complained to Aunt Inez. But you still hold sucincident,dge against   and now you are using some fake photoshopped photos to kick me out of the family, right?”

“This is what you want to do to please her! If this is what you want, just tell me… I will leave on my own accord!”

Behind her, Mateo rolled his eyes. He knew how much truth Penelope was speaking. She was only saying these words for their parents to hear and feel guilty.

“There is no need to struggle so hard.” Nicolai smiled at the woman who was still sitting on the floor. “I have already sent the evidence to be brought here; we will soon see the results.”

Theodore glanced at Nicolai; he knew that the man was not one to talk nonsense and pursed his lips before sighing and sitting down on the edge of the bed. He pulled his wife and made her sit next to him.

He knew that between the two, Kaylyn was the one who was the most disappointed. When she married him, she was working as a diplomat, but for the sake of raising their children, she gave up her passion and became a housewife.

This wall because she wanted their children to become honest and kind. If Penelope really did what Nicolai accused her of, Theodore was afraid that his wife would be the one who might not be able to take this blow.

Ariana, who stood outside the room with her back pressed against the wall, which hid her from the view, clenched her fingers. She was waiting to see whom her parents would choose to believe; if they chose Penelope, then there was no need for her to stay here.

And even though she knew that it was a bit selfish of her to eavesdrop without taking a part in this conversation, Ariana still selfishly chose to stay put, as she wanted to hear what the Ashfords thought of her behind her back.

After a few minutes, the doorbell of the house rang, and Ariana peered through the railings to see who it was. However, as the butler opened the door, the one who stepped out was a woman who was tied in bandages; her face was haggard and waned.

If Ariana had not seen this woman many times before, she would have had a hard time recognising her because the woman no longer had the same might as she used to in the past.

She was jumpy and scared; even the smallest thing frightened her, and she would let out a shriek once in a while whenever someone spoke to her, and despite this, Ariana didn’t have the slightest bit of sympathy for the woman.

The Ashford family also heard the sound of footsteps and voices, which were getting louder by the minute.

“Finally, they are here,” Emil muttered as he turned on his feet and went to look for the evidence that Nicolai spoke of.

While Nicolai, on the other hand, turned to look at Penelope and said to her, “If you want to confess anything, I believe it is the correct time for you to do so.”

Penelope glared at him, refusing to admit or deny anything anymore.

She was going to wait for the evidence to reveal itself.

And the evidence did reveal itself—or herself—as Arabella stepped inside the room with a pallid complexion and Penelope, who was crying, stiffened as her face turned pale.

How did this woman come here? Didn’t she hire someone to kill this woman?
