Chapter 515: Makeup and Dramatics
Nicolai walked over to the door where Arabella was standing. When the man stepped close to her, the woman stepped back as she could see that Nicolai was looking at her with an unnerving smile on his face.
“It’s great to see you, Arabella,” Nicolai greeted the woman. “How are you doing now? The bullets have been taken out of your body, right?”
Arabella shuddered while looking at him nervously. She was still resting in the hospital as her injuries were still fresh and she didn’t want to go home as her husband had been harping about getting a divorce. He continued to yell at her as he told her that it was her fault that he was now jobless and his company had gone bankrupt.
How was she supposed to know that Ariana was the long-lost daughter of the Ashford family? Arabella felt like someone was playing a joke on her.
After fighting with her husband this afternoon regarding the alimony, Arabella was having her lunch, which was just a bowl of bland porridge. However, just as she had taken a bite, someone came to her ward and bodily brought her out of her bed and then took her to the car that was parked in the parking lot.
At first, Arabella thought that she was getting kidnapped because she had refused to sign the divorce agreement given to her by her husband, but later on, the two burly men told her that she was called by Nicolai.
She, however, couldn’t be blamed for her actions. These past few days, Arabella felt like someone was after her life. All kinds of accidents happened to her, including someone trying to suffocate her when she was sleeping.
She attributed these accidents to her husband, who wanted to get rid of her as there was no one else with whom she had such deep animosity.
As for how she was feeling? Arabella, of course, felt thrilled about standing in a house that was so magnificent as this one. She had never seen a house as splendid as before —but with Nicolai staring at her like a grim reaper who was waiting for her to breathe her last and another woman glaring at her. The woman did look familiar but Arabella couldn’t recognise her. Who was this woman? Was she someone whose boyfriend she had stolen but the woman looked too young and rich from the clothes that she was wearing, there was no way she could have gone after the man of such a fine woman.
“Who is this, Nico?” Theodore asked with a frown.
“She is the one who—”
“She is Penelope’s good friend. The two of them are so close that this woman is willing to put her life on the line for her. Isn’t that right, Penelope?” Nicolai said to Penelope who fixed her expression into that of confusion. She blinked her eyes and then shook her head before saying, “I have no idea who she is. I have never met her.”
“Are you sure?” Nicolai asked with a tilt of his head as he continued to interrogate the woman who continued to deny her actions. “Think it through carefully, because a few days ago someone went to the apartment building and claimed that her fiance had been stolen by Miss Ariana Harlow and that she was feeling really depressed because of this.”
He paused and added in a low and threatening voice, “As someone who has continuously insisted that the two of us are engaged without any formal engagement—I believe that you are the most suspicious.”
Theodore narrowed his eyes and turned to look at Penelope before saying to her, “Is he speaking the truth? Did you insist and tell others that he and you are engaged? When did such a thing happen? I don’t remember it happening.”
Ariana, who was standing outside, heaved a sigh of relief, but her sigh of relief was caught in the middle as Theodore went ahead and stated firmly, “None of my children can be engaged or married to the De Luca family; you know this too Penelope.”
too,
The Ashford family has been neutral and working in Clover City for this very reason; he could not let history change itself.
“Theo,” Kaylyn placed her hand on the arm of her husband. She wanted to tell him that he shouldn’t say such things but sighed as she knew that her husband was also saying this for the sake of their kids and family.
The Ashford family could tilt the scales to one side if they were to align themselves with the Phantoms. If that were to happen, then the Serpents would not leave them alone.
“This is neither the time nor the place,” she reminded her husband who pursed his lips.
“I haven’t!” Penelope cried out in frustration. She turned and glared at Nicolai for bringing this matter up. He didn’t want to marry her, fine! But why did he have to embarrass her like this?
She then turned and glared at Arabella who took a step out of the room but came to a pause when she hit something with her back. She raised her head and looked at the man who stood behind and trembled before entering the room again.
She felt like she was caught between a rock and a hard place. No matter how much she wanted to jump out of this situation, there was no way out for her! Either way she was going to be squashed into a pulp by these people.
She turned to look at Penelope, hard, before saying to Nicolai, “The woman who came to me was sickly and she looked really frail—”
“Of course,” Nicolai clapped his hand as another woman stepped inside the room. “Where is the fun in dramatics if there is no makeup? Go and tell how that woman looked. In detail.. If you miss—” he turned to look at her and warned, “You will find my bullets missing as well..”
Arabella trembled before she nodded and started to relay how the woman looked,
“She—”
