Chapter 516: Past and Present riddles
“Get away from me!” Penelope shrieked when she saw the woman approaching her with the makeup box. “Nicolai! Stop this; you cannot treat me like this. I already told you I made no such claims in front of this woman. So why do you insist on insulting me like this damn it? We have been friends for so long! You and I grew up together. Do you not know me?”
Nicolai wasn’t moved by Penelope’s words. He said to her, “I am doing this because I do know you, Penelope. Don’t think that I don’t know about the things that you have done to those women whom I was with in my college days. I never paid any attention to you because those women never meant anything to me.”
His eyes narrowed as he stated, “Maybe I should have—at least that way, I could have squashed this boldness of yours before you could hurt, Ariana.”
Penelope felt dread crawl up her heart when she saw that the woman was getting closer and closer. She really did not want to go through with this because she knew that once the makeup was put on she would be caught, as this woman would surely recognise her.
“I don’t want this!” Penelope turned to look at her parents, whom she had fooled all these years by acting polite and kind. If she was caught, then she was worried that no one would believe her ever again.
If Ariana had not returned, it would not have been a big issue; she would have simply coaxed her parents. But now that they knew that she was not their biological daughter—what will happen to her when they find out that Penelope has hurt Ariana?
She thus begged her father with all her might. “You have to stop this; he is insulting me by putting such blame on my head. I am not such a cruel person. Mom, Dad, you know this too…”As she spoke, she clutched the left side of her bosom and pretended to faint. “I–I can’t…”
Seeing that her condition was not looking good, Kaylyn raised her head and looked at Nicolai. “Shall we postpone this? If her heart gets agitated like this, Penny might die.”
Her words eased the nervousness in her heart but before she could calm down, she heard Nicolai say,
“Ariana couldn’t breathe as well. Since she was fine, then Penelope will be fine as well.”
“You–you are trying to kill me for her,” Penelope panted, not expecting Nicolai to be so ruthless. She pretended to faint, but the man still didn’t let her off!
“No, I am not, Penny,” Nicolai cooed at her. “If I wanted to kill you, you would be dead by now.”
No matter how much Penelope resisted, Nicolai didn’t let her go. Soon her face turned pale, her eyes turned heavy, and her expression became gloomy as if she had not eaten for days.
The woman whom Nicolai brought back was a professional artist; thus, her work was even cleaner than Penelope herself.
“Now,” Nicolai turned to look at Arabella. “Is this the woman who told you that Ariana stole her fiance?”
Arabella’s eyes widened as she looked at the woman. She nodded and replied, “She is indeed the one who told those things to me.” Her voice was rather excited as she yelled at Penelope, “Young Miss, why did you have to do this to me? Because of you, do you know that I am getting divorced? You have ruined my perfect life.”
“Why did you lie to me?”
Theodore closed his eyes while Kaylyn turned pale. She was truly taken aback by the words that Arabella said, her daughter—no, Penelope, whom she had raised, really did such a thing.
Nicolai, on the other hand, looked at her and sneered, “It seems like you like to daydream a lot, Penelope?”
Mateo looked down at his sister, who was looking at them with shock and disbelief on her face. Her complexion was pale, as if she were still trying to process what just happened. He shook his head. He knew that Penelope would one day try to make a move on Ariana.
And they were so busy solving the riddles of the past that they forgot about the present.
Fortunately, Ariana had Nicolai, who was willing to go through great lengths for her.
Kaylyn turned to the woman and asked, “Are you sure? You are not mistaking her for someone else, are you?” Though she had all the evidence in the world, Kaylyn still hoped that it wasn’t Penelope who did such a cruel thing to Ariana.
Because if she did such a thing, then it was not her who failed. It was Kaylyn who failed as a mother. It was bad enough that she couldn’t even teach Penelope properly, but what was worse was that she couldn’t see through her lies, which led her poor child to get injured and humiliated.
Arabella was still cursing Penelope; when she heard the words of Kaylyn, she nodded and replied, “I am speaking the truth; I can never forget this woman. It is because of her that I was shot three times, and now I am about to be divorced. I have seen this face so many times in my dreams that I can even recognise her after waking up.”
She contemptuously stared at Penelope and said in an agitated voice, “You really are a good person, Miss. You lied to us and used us as the shoulder to put your gun on—did you ever stop and think what would happen to us poor people?”
“Of course you didn’t. I am sure a woman like you wouldn’t worry about people like us.”
“That day before the incident happened,” Nicolai interrupted Arabella and turned to face the Ashford family. “Penelope went to the apartment building where Ariana lives. She told this woman and a bunch of other women that Ariana had stolen her nonexistent fiance. She also added that Ariana didn’t ruin just one marriage but countless because she is an immoral and shameless woman. Isn’t that right, Penny?”
