Chapter 518: Frenzied
Kaylyn stumbled and nearly fell on the floor, but before she could crash into the tea table behind her, she was pulled up by her husband. Theodore helped her sit down on the edge of the bed and turned to look at Penelope.
“Is this true, Penelope? Is Nicolai and that woman telling the truth?”
However, Penelope didn’t seem to hear the disappointment in his voice. If anything, the woman was filled with disbelief when she thought about how her parents were questioning her.
“Why are you asking me this? Are you really going to question me? Can you not understand why I did it? She was about to take you away from me. This is my home, my family! Everything belongs to me. Not her!” She couldn’t help but cry.
Emil looked at Penelope, whose mask was finally off; he didn’t know how Penelope turned this twisted.
Kaylyn shook her head. She turned the question around and asked Penelope, “Then tell me, Penny. Why did you have to do such a thing? I doubt Ariana even did anything to you. She didn’t even know that she was not related to the Harlows. If anything, she has been nothing but kind towards our family.”
“She saved Emil’s life. If she had not insisted and taken the right steps, Emil would have died.”
It would have been better if he died, though Penelope viciously. If Emil had died that night, no one would have met with Ariana, and her position would have been secure and safe.
“I just wanted to survive!” Penelope’s facade couldn’t help but crumble. She had maintained the dignity of a kind and understanding daughter. However, she couldn’t help but feel betrayed when she heard her parents support Ariana. Obviously they were her parents, and they watched her grow.
They should care and love her, so why were they not willing to listen and stand by her side?
“I know it was selfish, but—but what’s wrong with what I did? I just wanted to save myself. In this world, who cares about others but themselves? I did the same thing.”
Theodore couldn’t help but wheel around. He glared at his daughter and said to her, “This is not the matter of who is in the right and who is in the wrong, Penelope. Indeed, being selfish is not wrong but having no bottom line? That’s simply inhuman! You tried to kill someone because of your selfishness. Do you think you are in the right?”
“The reason that you recounted is simply childish. What do you mean by saying that you were worried about being abandoned? That you did it because you wanted to survive? Do you not trust us enough to know that we wouldn’t have loved you any less even if Ariana returned home?”
He shook his head in disappointment before saying, “But the things that you have done make me question where we went wrong with you. You are reacting like a spoiled child for the stupidest reason. We have taught you to be kind, Penelope. But you have become the opposite of what your mother and I wanted you to become. It really breaks our heart to see that the daughter we raised has such a dark heart.”
Penelope was used to being treated with affection by her father and mother; they have never looked at her with disappointment in their eyes. She did not expect them to look at her with such a gaze, which made her shake her head and say,
“You do not understand, dad. I never wanted to hurt that woman… I just…
“You just what?” Mateo asked as he walked over to where Penelope was sitting and pulled her up by her arm. He glared at her and questioned her, “You just what, Penny, pray tell me why did you attack my sister? What were you trying to do by telling such lies about her to the people? Do you have any answer to this?”
“AHH!” Penelope shrieked in pain as she struggled against Mateo’s hold. “Let go of me; it hurts. You are hurting me.”
“You feel pain at such a little thing?” Mateo was questioned in a deadly voice. “My sister has to suffer countless hands pulling and hitting her because of you. She stopped breathing, Penny! I saw her. Do you even know what kind of thing Ariana had to suffer because of you? How dare you say that you did not mean to hurt her?” he roared.
“I didn’t want to hurt her! I just wanted her to leave and go away from here,” Penelope shouted back agitatedly. “She grew up with those people, just fine. So why can’t she stay with them? Why does she have to ruin my family? My life?”
“Just fine? That mother of yours locked her up! She starved her—”
“Exactly!” Penelope yelled, losing her mind completely. “She is used to pain and suffering; she will be fine even if she doesn’t return. What about me? I grew up in a lavish and well-to-do family; I cannot go through what she did! Since she can withstand it for so long, a little more will not hurt.”
“How can you be so shameless?” Emil exploded. “You took her place, her life, and instead of being grateful, you want her to continue suffering in your place? What does my sister even owe you?”
“I am your sister, Emil!” Penelope bellowed. “I grew up with you, not her!”
“I would have loved it if she grew up with me!” Emil shouted back. “If she was with us, then none of us have to go through what you did to us! But we were just as unfortunate as you were fortunate, which led us to this situation.”
Penelope panted heavily when she heard the words of Emil, but she did not feel that she had done wrong. She glared at her brother and said to him, “Who asked you to not put me first? I am your sister. Your fucking sister, I am your priority, no one else! If you had just listened to what I wanted, then nothing like that would have happened—AHH”
