Chapter 519: Scarred
Theodore, who had listened enough to Penelope’s nonsense, could not help but raise his hand and slap her.
He looked at her enraged, while Penelope, who had never even received a scolding from her father, looked at him with shock in her eyes.
Behind them Kaylyn covered her face and sobbed in embarrassment. Who would have thought that all that love and care was simply wasted on Penelope? She had not just betrayed them; she had stripped them off their pride that they had for raising their children so well.
“I and your mother have been lenient with you. We thought that you were a simple girl, though a bit haughty. We let it slide because you were born with a weak heart, but you make me regret that we took it for granted that we did a fine job with you just as we did with your brothers.” Theodore stared at his daughter, who was looking more and more like a stranger to him. No matter how he looked at her, she no longer resembled the polite and quiet girl.
His eyes held sorrow and anger, “Emil is right. How can you be so selfish? Ariana suffered in the hands of that woman who gave birth to you. On what account are you saying that she should take the torment for you? On what account are you claiming that this family belongs to you?”
“Why shouldn’t my daughter come back to where she belongs? This is her house! I am her father!”
“What have you done for her that my daughter should give up everything for you? What do you even mean to her?”
Penelope parted her trembling lips, but nothing came out. Her eyes, however, held anger, which was directed at Ariana; if only that woman had died, then she wouldn’t have been embarrassed like this.
She turned to look at her mother and called her “Mom.”
“Please don’t say anything, Penelope,” Kaylyn wiped her tears and sniffed. “I am so disappointed in you that I cannot even say it. I have raised you with all my love and care; I have asked and taught you to return these two things to the world no matter what the circumstance.”
“How–how can you not feel guilty over trying to kill my daughter? Do you not feel grateful for what I did for you? Is this how you were going to repay me?”
Penelope wanted to say something, but Nicolai walked over to the Ashford family and said to them, “The reason she is like this is because you refused to punish her when she should have been and let her do whatever she wanted to do. I will suggest that you should punish her this time, or at least let me do it for you, or else she would continue like this in the future.”
Theodore looked at Nicolai, and so did Penelope.
Penelope’s eyes widened as she exclaimed, “Punishment? You want to punish me? On what basis?”
“On the basis that you hurt someone I care for!” Nicolai wished to tell the Ashford family that he loved Ariana, but he was worried that if he said those words, Theodore would definitely stop Ariana from meeting him.
He glared at her and said to Penelope, “If we let this slide today, then you will definitely repeat this offence. You have a hard time accepting your faults, don’t you, Penelope?”
Penelope scoffed. She got to her feet and then stepped away from everyone. “Why shall I be punished? I am humiliated by you all to this point! Look at me; that woman just returned for three days, and you all turned against me. Do you dare to say that you would have treated me well if I were to tell the truth to you?” she asked.
She then turned to look at her mother and said to her, “Mom, they cannot understand me. But you can, right? Your parents also gave up on you and chose your sister. Do you not understand my fear?”
Theodore glared at her. “Do not compare your mother with yourself. Your mother knows the difference between right and wrong; even if she was abandoned by her parents, she had never once tried to get back at them. She had only been kind towards others and nothing else.”
“You should be pleading for your cruel actions towards our daughter. For repaying our grace of raising you with nothing but cruelty, you have shown us just why the relationship between blood is important. We have treated you with love, and you grew up, so be this cruel while our daughter was raised with nothing but sheer torment, but I don’t see her killing anyone!”
“You are truly your mother’s daughter.”
Everyone knew which mother Theodore was speaking about.
“DAD!”
Penelope screamed in shock. She couldn’t believe that Theodore had said such cruel words to her. How could he compare her to that woman? She was—she wasn’t her daughter… no she wasn’t.
She shook her head in denial.
No,
“Nicolai.” Mateo turned to look at the man behind him. He asked, “How do you suggest we should punish Penelope?”
“Mateo!” Penelope turned around and looked at her brother, who didn’t look at her as he agreed with Nicolai and wanted to punish her.
“I would have suggested kicking her out of the Ashford family but that will only give her more freedom to make a move against Ariana,” Nicolai looked at Penelope coldly. “Since she brought physical pain to Ariana and ruined her pride by shaming her, I suggest something similar to be done to her.”
As he spoke, he took out a dagger from his pocket.

“Don’t you like that face of yours? I bet that face helped you fool many; I wonder will others pity you if it were to get scarred?” He mused as he straightened up and looked at Penelope with a flicker of cruelty in his eyes.
