Chapter 520: Neither Sun nor Pluto
“You have lost your mind,” Penelope immediately stepped away from Nicolai. This man had lost his mind. How could he even suggest such a thing? What had she done to deserve this? Ariana was completely fine.
Even if she suffered a little, was she not alright? Why should she be punished in such a horrible manner? Penelope didn’t doubt Nicolai’s words; in fact, she was certain that he might really do it.
She wasn’t going to let him ruin her. Stifling a sob, she said to Nicolai, “I know that my approach was not right. I admit that I was being petty and jealous, but I was also scared. I made a mistake but I will not do it again…” She turned to look at her mother and rushed towards her before throwing herself in front of her.
“Penelope, what—”
“Mom, please,” Penelope hugged the legs of her mother and pleaded with her. “Don’t let them do this to me; I promise I will not do this again. Please.. You have watched me grow up; can you really watch him ruin me like this? If my face is ruined, who will marry me? I have lost my family. My world has been turned upside down in just a few days… Please don’t let him ruin me like this.”
Kaylyn tried to pull her legs away from Penelope, but the woman didn’t let go. She hugged her legs with her forehead resting against her feet.
“Penelope, first let go of me.”
“I won’t until you tell me that you have forgiven me.”
Kaylyn raised her head and looked at her husband helplessly. Though she was greatly disappointed with what Penelope had done, she couldn’t watch her face be cut with a dagger. Penelope was right; she had watched her grow up in front of her. The thought of sitting and doing nothing while Penelope’s face was disfigured made Kaylyn a bit uneasy.
Theodore looked at his daughter with disappointment welling in his eyes. He had raised Penelope with much more care and love; after all, he had always wanted a daughter. Even when she was mediocre when compared to her brothers, she was treated better than the three of them.
Maybe it was his fault that he treated Penelope with too much leniency.
But Penelope was his daughter whom he had raised in the end, and he couldn’t watch her be ruined.
“Nicolai, don’t you think that the punishment is too dreadful? Penelope’s life will be ruined.”
“It won’t,” Nicolai promised. “It’s just a simple cut. One, just one. The medical field is so advanced now; can’t she just fix her face? Like she said — Ariana grew up just fine after suffering through so much torment. Since she didn’t die, where is the damage? Then why is she so scared to get a cut? I just want her to learn her lesson and nothing more.”
Penelope wheeled her head and looked at Nicolai with anger. “Don’t you touch my face.” Fear was palpable in her eyes as she looked at Nicolai, “You don’t wish to marry me; on what basis are you hurting my face? If you ruin my face, how will I marry a good man?”
“Why should I care about that?” Nicolai glared at her with a smile on his lips. “You didn’t care about the consequences when you egged those people to jump on Ariana like a bunch of hyenas. Don’t you think that you are being too hypocritical?”
Penelope clenched her fists. “I know that I was in the wrong. You have done so many things wrong as well, Nicolai–on what grounds can you look down on me?”
“On the grounds that I have never hurt an innocent person. But you are different, Penelope,” Nicolai gave her a knowing glance, making the woman shiver. “The rules set by my familia, I will follow them without any loopholes, but you, on the other hand, will look for loopholes to get what you want.”
“I dare not to leave you alone, in case you start acting up again.”
Kaylyn looked at Nicolai and spoke in a tentative voice, “Is this necessary?”
Nicolai turned to look at Kaylyn. He said to her, “What do you think, Mrs. Ashford? Do you think that what your daughter has done is a simple mistake? It’s not. Because of her lies, Ariana was dragged, pulled, and pushed when she was already having trouble breathing. You didn’t see her; if you had, then you would have never asked this question to me. All kinds of rumours were spread about Ariana; if she was not lucky and my cousin was not with her, you would be arranging a funeral.”
“She could have lost her job, or worse, she could have died.”
He spoke so vividly that Kaylyn couldn’t bring herself to defend Penelope anymore.
“But if you feel and think that I am being too much, then let me do the same thing that she had done to Ariana.” Nicolai didn’t need to think with his heart when it came to dealing with people like Penelope who pretended to be kind and stood on a higher moral ground when they were simply rotten to their cores.
“What?” Penelope’s eyes widened.
“Let me call the same crowd and then let them publicise the things that you have done to Ariana and how you have lied to them,” Nicolai wickedly smiled and stated coldly. “All you need is to sit quietly and take a beating. You think what Ariana went through is not too difficult, right? Then you go through it as well; once the records are even.. I will put my dagger away.”
“No!” Penelope could and would never agree to such a thing. She had always put herself on the pedestal of being kind and loving; if others were to find out that she had done such a thing, then what would happen to her reputation?
“It will be either this or that, Penelope,” Nicolai raised his hand and smashed the dagger onto the cabinet. “You might think the world revolves around you, FYI. It doesn’t. You ain’t no one’s sun—pardon me, you ain’t even worth enough to be called someone’s pluto.”
