Chapter 523: A father’s interference
Nicolai looked at Theodore and nodded. He stepped out of the room with Theodore and said to her, “Are you upset with what I have done?”
There was no other reason except this one. Maybe Theodore still held some hopes for Penelope?
“No,” Theodore shook his head. His expression was serious, as if he was pondering what to make of Nicolai’s actions. “I am not upset. What Penelope had done is something no one should ever do, and what’s even worse is that she did such a thing to Ariana.”
“I know better than you when to forgive someone. What Penny has done is not worth forgiving. She deserves what you did to her.”
He paused and sighed, “Penelope should have known better; there was no way we would have stayed silent once we found out about the things that she had done to my daughter.” Theodore placed his hands behind his back and said to Nicolai, “With great status and power come great responsibilities. There is no way I would agree to her twisted reasoning.”
“Just because she has power and money, Penelope doesn’t have the right to harm innocent people. No matter who they were.”
“Then what do you want to talk to me about?” He asked Theodore.
“Ariana,” Theodore said. He turned on his feet and walked over to his office, where Ariana was hiding.
As Theodore had no idea that she was hiding there, he said to Nicolai, “I hope you do remember what I told you?”
“Which lecture are you speaking about?” Nicolai asked Theodore. “You have given me a lot of lectures; I don’t know which one you are talking about.”
“About how the Ashford family can never join their hands with Phantoms and Serpents,” Theodore sternly reminded Nicolai. “I am not against you, Nico. But you know very well about the dangers, don’t you? I think I don’t have to tell you why I am telling you this; do I have to?”
Nicolai stiffened. He knew why Theodore was saying these words to him, but he still stubbornly stated, “She is my friend—.”
“I know,” Theodore was aware of the fact that Nicolai felt something more towards Ariana than just treating her as his friend. However, as long as Nicolai didn’t say anything, he would not address his feelings either. “However, I hope that your relationship with my daughter will only be that of a friend. Because if the Serpents were to find out, they would try to use my daughter and my family to gain an upper hand on you. I don’t want that to happen.”
It wasn’t that Theodore was unwilling to let his daughter fall in love and marry the man she liked.
But that man could never be Nicolai.
This man was too dangerous, and the potential risks of him staying with his daughter were just too many.
“But what if Ariana wants to stay with me?” Nicolai asked.
Theodore turned the knob of his office door and then turned to look at Nicolai, “I won’t stop her but I can assure you that if she was to get together with you, I will be a bit disappointed for no daughter of mine should be with a man like you. You live a dangerous life Nico… my daughter is not that tough.”
Before Theodore could step inside the office, Nicolai said to him, “Did your family do something to offend the Serpents? Is there any history related between you and the head of the Serpents?”
Theodore furrowed his brows and shook his head. “I don’t think so.”
“Maybe you should look into it,” Nicolai curled his lips in a derisive sneer. “Because the one who is behind this entire mess is the leader of the Serpents. You still think that your family has been maintaining a proper balance?”
He paused and added, ” And Pallas is stronger than you think.”
After he finished speaking, Nicolai turned on his feet and walked down the stairs leaving a really bewildered Theodore and a stunned Ariana.
In Penelope’s room, the woman had fallen on her bed as soon as she locked the door of her room. She was sitting on the edge of the bed while looking at the reflection of her face in the mirror. The family doctor was treating her wounds.
“Miss Penelope, please stop crying. If the stitches get infected, then you will end up with even more troublesome injury,” said the doctor.
“Why don’t I cut your face then? You will realise how much I am suffering then.”
Penelope’s pride had been shattered after losing her face in the hands of the man whom she loved. She couldn’t help but snap at the doctor because Penelope felt like he was making fun of her.
But the doctor truly was just looking after her, as he did not know what happened inside the bedroom of the head of the Ashford family.
He had yet to hear about Penelope’s being a fake.
The doctor hurriedly cleaned the wounds that were on Penelope’s face and then took his leave. Once the man was gone, Penelope looked at the criss cross stitches on her face that looked not only ugly but disgusting and yelled in pain.

“My Face! He ruined my face!”
Penelope screamed and cried. Wishing she could skin Ariana alive and use her very skin to mend her own. It was her fault! It’s all her fault that she was in this situation. If that woman had never come back, then she would not be in this situation!
Ariana, who was walking past Penelope’s room, heard her cries, but she didn’t stop to comfort the woman. She was the cause and the reason why she was embarrassed and humiliated by others.
Ariana believed that it was good enough that she hadn’t joined in the conversation regarding the punishment that Penelope had received.
At least she had been human enough to let Penelope keep a little bit of her pride. But what about her? That woman had ruined hers completely.
If Nicolai was not with her, Ariana was certain that she would have never made out of that perilous situation alive.
So, this was the result of Penelope’s own actions.
“Ariana.”
