Chapter 539: A foolish man (2)
Inez looked at her son with an amused smile on her face.
“Looking at you like this makes me feel like you are a forlorn lover. Who can’t meet with his beloved,” she remarked as she sat down on the stool.
“Mom!”
“Alright, alright,” Inez rolled her eyes. “Your uncle Theo is angry. You have to understand his considerations as well; his daughter just left the hospital but ended up in the hospital once again, and this time the matter was related to you again. How can he not be angry?”
“And to make things worse, she is his long lost daughter. It would be surprising if he could withstand such a thing.”
Nicolai pursed his lips and questioned, “But he allowed her to meet with Noah?” Not that he was butthurt about this entire thing.
He was mature; he knew and understood that Ariana was only doing formalities after all; Noah was the one who helped her when he was missing. And it was him who tried to tackle Samuel onto the ground but ended up getting shot in his leg.
It was only right for Ariana to visit him.
So of course he was not sulking about it on a daily basis; he was just upset with the difference in treatment.
But who cared? It was she who cried and sobbed when he went missing. It was Ariana who was pinning after him; he had no—not even the slightest emotion left for her.
The two of them were done.
The drug was out of his system, and he was back to being the wise and cold-hearted Nicolai.
Yeah, right. The voice in his head snickered.
You are still trapped where she left you.
And as much as he hated it, the voice was right. He really couldn’t move on an inch and was still standing at the same spot like a pitifully abandoned child, waiting for the woman to come and take his hand.
He swore, These days he was dreaming of her sitting next to his bed and speaking to him in a low voice before leaving. She even leaned down and kissed him on his forehead.
That damn woman had ruined him in every way. He would think of her when he woke up, and he would think of her when he was sleeping. And now that he was ruined like this, Ariana refused to take responsibility.
The harder he tried to get rid of her presence and forget her, the more her memories haunted him. These three weeks he stayed in the penthouse because he was pathetically clinging to the things that she used such that he would be able to smell her or imagine her shadow walking around the penthouse.
But there was no way he was going to crawl back. No matter how pathetic he was within the four walls of his house, there was no way he was going to look for the woman who had abandoned and taken him for granted.
Because it was better that way, he did not have to deal with her push and pull game. Her indecisiveness and complicated personality. Her mixed signals.
He was not the kind of man who would deal with complications. And Ariana was a rather big complication.
Thus, even though her memories were haunting him like an evil spirit, he was bent on ignoring them.
But —
That woman just had to text him!
The second he heard her voice filled with hesitation, he knew that he was a goner.
He understood one thing after that night: he could not fucking stay away from her. Nicolai could try to force himself away from her, but he could never free himself from her.
“She only met with him once,” Inez reminded him.
“He is still one up,” Nicolai grumbled. He fished his phone and glared at its screen. Not one single freaking message.
Inez sighed. “First get discharged. Maybe once everything settles down, you will see Ariana; you have to understand that even though the Ashford family has friendly relations with our family—they will not endanger their interests and lives for us.”
But the thing was that Nicolai did not want to wait. Nope, nada. The time to wait had passed and he was going to make his move.

It was either this or that.
This fucking push and pull had to end here.
And this was the reason why he found himself standing outside the hospital. His gaze was locked on Ariana who was helping a patient.
Though she was injured and almost ended up mutilating her hands, she was still not willing to stay at home. Once she regained the mobility in her hands, she returned to the hospital and started working once again.
His eyes tracked every moment of hers as she talked with the man who was almost leaning against her body. Of course it was her –I am professional—smile but it did not change the fact that she was smiling at another man.
She nodded and listened to the man who was chattering away.
And a few times she would laugh out of courtesy. She better stop smiling at that bastard or someone might end up in a fucking coffin tonight.
Anyway, that man was half dead; it didn’t change anything.
Would he stop looking at her with those fuck me eyes?
Nicolai sucked in a breath. He needed to calm down and chill for a second because he and Ariana were not even together anymore.
Not that they were together in the first place, the only thing that was holding them together was the money that Ariana had already repaid.
Ariana gave that man another nod and was about to leave when the man grasped her wrist and brought it to his chest. What did he say? That it hurts? Why don’t he rip that heart of his and end the freaking matter all together?
That man was making his intentions pretty clear.
But of course, Ariana didn’t seem to be interested in him. Haha in your—what the fuck?
