Chapter 549: A terrifying night (2)
Sensitive content ahead.
Ariana didn’t know that Penelope was yet to give up on her evil thoughts. She returned to her room, where she took a bath and slid inside her bed after drying her hair and body.
With her head hitting the pillow, Ariana closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. However, her sleep was not dreamless. She waded through the past, where she was pushed to do things and learn lessons that she did not like.
There were traces and glimpses that made Ariana hate and loathe herself for letting herself loose.
She opened her eyes and breathed harshly. Though she knew that she was lost in dreams till now, Ariana still felt terrified when she thought about how Nicolai would find her revolting once the cracks opened up enough to let him peek.
He would look at her the same way the shadows and the inky figures looked at her.
She wanted to once again run and hide but that would mean that she was going to lose him again.
So, instead of letting her fear overpower her, she closed her eyes and breathed in and out.
That was until she sensed something amiss. Like there was something inside of her room. Startled, she sat up straight in her bed; her eyes flickered all over the room before falling into a dark silhouette that was standing at the corner of the room.
Her eyes widened and Ariana scrambled to the side of the bed. She did not care if she could outrun this man who had snuck inside her room; all she wanted was to get away from him.
“Help—”
The sound of footsteps echoed in the room and Ariana found herself knocked on the floor. The figure behind her caught hold of her neck and pressed her down on the ground.
While the other hand caught hold of her mouth as the figure started to pull her back into the room towards the bed.
Ariana’s eyes turned red as she bit the hand that was choking her, while her hands and legs thrashed wildly.
The man, however, did not let go of her. His hold on her throat was way too tight. Ariana felt her breath break and her eyes constricted. She kicked the bedside cabinet and when the lamp fell and smashed into pieces, she picked up a sharp piece of glass and smashed it in the leg of the man who was trying to pull her up on the bed.
“ARGH!” the groan of the man echoed in the room, followed by the sound of something else breaking. The man had pushed Ariana away from him, causing her head to knock on the cabinet as the water jug tumbled on the floor.
Knock! Knock!
Someone knocked on the door.
“Ariana! What’s going on? We heard the sound of something breaking,” Mateo shouted and the man on the bed rushed past Ariana before jumping out of the window. Ariana did not respond immediately; she was lying on the floor while trying to even her breathing as blood gushed down from the corner of her forehead.
“Ariana!” When Ariana did not reply immediately, Mateo knew that there was something wrong. He turned to look at his brothers and parents before saying, “Get back.”
They did as he asked and Mateo raised his foot before kicking the door open.
Bang!
The door pushed open and Mateo rushed inside the room.
“Ariana,” he called again in surprise when he saw Ariana lying on the floor in between the mess. “What happened?”
“Someone—cough—someone was inside my room just now,” she replied in a breathless voice.
“Are you sure about this?” Mateo asked while looking at her worriedly. “Are you sure you were not dreaming just now? Maybe something scared you.”
“No–”
“No.”
Emil and Ariana spoke at the same time. While Ariana refused because she was sure that there was no way she had dreamed of such a thing happening, Emil agreed with her because he could see the marks on Ariana’s neck.
He pointed at the red finger marks and said to Mateo, “Look at her neck, Matt. There was no way it was a dream.”

Mateo and Keon followed his gaze and noticed the fingermarks on Ariana’s neck. They were thick and harsh; anyone could see that they belonged to a man.
“Fuck,” Mateo cursed as he got to his feet and called the security while Kaylyn rushed to where Ariana was and helped her up.
“How are you feeling, honey?” She asked tentatively when she saw Ariana’s breath turning choppy. “Do you want to go to the hospital?”
Ariana shook her head. She knew that there was nothing wrong with her; the only reason she could not breathe was because she was terrified. All she needed to do was calm down but her heart refused to comply.
Fortunately, she woke up or else—a shiver danced down her spine and Ariana hugged herself. What was going on? Why was she being targeted like this?
“What happened?” Keon asked in his calm voice.
“I don’t know,” Ariana replied honestly. “I was sleeping when suddenly I woke up. And as soon as I woke up, I got this weird feeling like someone was watching me. That was when I realised that someone had indeed snuck in my room.”
Ariana never wanted to face that feeling ever again. The helplessness and anxiety that she got when the man was pulling her just now.
Mateo stepped inside the room again and announced, “The surveillance cameras are broken. The entire building is under repair right now.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a chill rose and emanated through the walls before settling down uneasily around the room.
No one spoke but everyone understood what took place just now.
“Did the security guards see someone leave just now?” Keon asked.
“They said at least four cars left just now; however, neither of them knows to whom those cars belong.”
“What do you mean that they do not know—”
“The cars had no number plate.”
