Chapter 550: Burn the world for you
“Do you think it was that man?” Emil questioned his brothers with worry in his eyes. He had a feeling that tonight’s incident had something to do with the man who was behind the exchange of the two baby girls as well as Ariana’s sufferings.

Mateo sat down on the couch. He had arranged for the police inspection as well as the security guard team to examine Ariana’s room and give a proper explanation for how and when the trespassing happened.

According to the police officers, the trespasser had to be one of the residents of the building, as even though four cars left the premises after the incident, none of them left the parking lot for the entire morning. Which meant the person behind this forcefully breaking in and attacking Ariana had to be someone from this building.

But while it did narrow down the list, there was a small problem. There were more than fifty families living in this building and each family had a man in his late forties or fifties. Were they going to interrogate each and every single man? Even Mateo felt that it was simply not feasible.

“I think so too, Em,” Mateo groaned before releasing a yawn. “But the problem is that we cannot go around knocking on the door of each and every family living in this building and ask them—excuse me, do you think that your father or husband are capable of killing, stalking, and committing heinous crimes like these? Can we?”

He turned to look at his father and Keon before asking, “What are we going to do? We cannot let this matter drag any longer. That man found out that Ariana is with us and his well-thought-out scheme has fallen through. I don’t think he will leave her be.”

“More importantly,” A dark glint flashed in his eyes as he stated, “The fact that he made such a careless move is quite ominous.”

“What do you mean by careless?” Emil asked.

“Use your brain, Emil,” Keon rubbed his forehead. “This is the same man who exchanged Ariana and Penelope and got away without being caught for more than twenty years. There is a good possibility that he must have done something more than this. Do you think a man as smart as this would make a rookie mistake like this one?”

“This was either one of his fucked-up games or a warning to our family. This must be his own way of telling us that he wants us to send Ariana away. Because when she was not with the Ashford family, that man stayed away from her. But the second she returned, he came to attack her.”

“Then he should be prepared to be disappointed,” Theodore curled his lips in a sneer. “Because I will never give up on my daughter because of such stupid reasons.” He turned to look at Keon and said to him, “Bring me all the data of our rivals from the past few years. Let’s see who is playing the ghost.”

At the same time, Kaylyn looked at Ariana and asked her in a soft voice, “Are you sure that you want to sleep alone?”

“Yes,” Ariana nodded. She was not used to sleeping with anyone; even with Nicolai, she was getting used to it slowly. There was no way she could accept her mother and her presence in her room and bed.

Seeing that she really didn’t like the idea, Kaylyn sighed and didn’t push Ariana. She said to her, “Alright, but this time around I am just a room away. If something happens, then you need to call me at once. Don’t worry about anything, no matter what the time or hour, just call me and I will come running, alright?”

“Okay.”

“Pinky promise?” Kaylyn raised her hand and jutted out her pinky finger for Ariana to hook.

Though Ariana found this a bit immature, she smiled and hooked her finger with Kaylyn, who smiled back at her before taking her leave.

Once her mother left, Ariana closed the door behind her and walked inside the new room which was given to her. She couldn’t help but wonder whether the man really snuck inside the penthouse without anyone knowing or —

She thought of Penelope, who was warming milk in the kitchen.

Or did someone let that man sneak inside her room?

And while she was busy with such worries, her body slowly lulled to sleep as it slowly unwind itself after the high rush of adrenaline.

Ariana, who had drifted off to sleep, soon woke up when she felt the same prickly sensation of being watched. But this time when she woke up, her gaze met with Nicolai’s.

The sound of screams and yells echoed in the room and she was thankful that everyone was busy with their own thing or else they would have come looking for the source of trouble.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her eyes fell on the screen of his phone and she heard a reporter say,

“It is estimated that it was due to faulty gas lines. More information is yet to be known—”

Ariana’s eyes widened when she realised that the building that was on fire was actually the building where she lived! Her neighbours were running around and yelling in pain and anguish as years of their hard work turned into ashes.

“What—how?” She turned to look at Nicolai who was sitting calmly. “It was you?” It was more of a statement than a question.

Nicolai closed the screen of his phone but Ariana snatched it from him and started watching the news report. It was indeed the same building.

“I wanted to see something more romantic,” he pouted when she continued looking at the news. “But if this is what you like then it’s fine. Anyway, this is a lovely scene as well. People crying and yelling in pain as they lose what they love. Truly fascinating.”

“You burnt down an entire building, Nicolai!” Ariana turned to look at him in shock and worry. “There are kids and innocent people living in there, what if—”
