Chapter 557: Never show your face again.
“There is no need for you to be upset because of my words, Inez,” Carcel hypocritically smiled at her. “I just want to do what is best for us as well as the Senate. You do understand how these loose ends can end up causing us a lot of trouble, right? We are lucky that this man only wants Nicolai to marry his daughter and nothing else.”
“Think about it, what would have happened if this man had gone to the police?”
“Then he would have found his head detached from his body, wouldn’t he?”
Carcel’s eyes widened as he wheeled around and looked at the man who stood behind him.
“Nicolai, what are you doing here?” He snapped at the man harshly.
“Funnily enough, this is my house,” Nicolai smiled at the man. He stepped inside the office, towering over Mister Harlow, who shrank his shoulders when he realised and saw the man whom he was supposed to blackmail.
On one hand he was now really scared for the safety of his life but at the same time the temptation of money was really too big for him to ignore.
“Having a lovely day, Mom?” Nicolai asked carelessly as if it was not him who was being threatened.
Inez rubbed her forehead and glared at her son. She was not upset with him killing a woman, because she knew her son too well. He wouldn’t have caused such a ruckus if not for the fact that the woman had something to cross him.
Her son might be a mafia prince but he wouldn’t break the law that the senate followed from the time of his grandfather for no reason.
“You tell me,” she said to him. “These two men came to me and now they are threatening me with the prospect of sending my only son to prison. You think I am doing fine?”
“Isn’t it just about marrying, Penelope?” Nicolai had long caught the semblance between Mister Harlow and Penelope as the two of them looked the same. They had the same murky eyes; as one was drunk on alcohol, the other was drunk on her greed and ambitions.
He smiled at Carcel, who narrowed his eyes, feeling as if his plans were going to tumble down at any second.
“Then I will surely marry her without any trouble.”
Carcel’s eyes widened as if he realised that his plan had backfired while Mister Harlow’s eyes widened with glee as he realised that his dreams were about to come true.
“Are you honest to your words?” Mister Harlow asked.
“Well, fuck, I am,” Nicolai smiled at the man. “I mean, you have collected enough evidence to prosecute me and have me sent to prison. So of course, I have no choice, do I?”
“Nicolai, think before you speak,” Carcel said to Nicolai, who raised his brows and in return calmly stated, “What do you mean by think before you speak? You were the one who brought him here? What did you think? That I was going to refuse his offer and let your son take over the Senate? Sorry to break it to you, fucker. But I will never let go of my position. Especially for a woman.”
“Marrying Penelope will secure my position? I sure as hell will do that.”
Carcel had indeed hoped that Nicolai would refuse to marry Penelope, giving him a chance to chase this man out of the position that he held through the sheer conviction of his grandfather alone.
But who would have thought that he would agree? As far as he knew, Nicolai was not the kind of man who would let anyone rule or command him. Unless there was something that was cooking inside of his head, he had to think of a way to make Nicolai either marry that useless woman such that he would be more or less subdued or think of a way to kick Penelope out of the situation altogether.
But that would be dangerous given that the world didn’t know about this and—
“What’s wrong with you? Did Dominic not give you enough money to do his bidding?” Nicolai taunted. “Want me to call him and ring him up?”
Carcel’s face turned red. Indeed, the one who called him was Dominic, who told him that it would benefit all of them if Nicolai married Penelope. While they wanted to control Nicolai, Dominic firmly believed that as long as Nicolai was to marry Penelope, all his troubles would end.
After all, even if Dominic liked to act as if he was doing really well. The truth was that his business was failing and that too miserably. Thus the temptation of the deal that Penelope had given to that man was too hard for him to avoid.
“I don’t understand what you are saying.” Carcel refused to admit that he was involved with Dominic.
“Mm-hmm. You are right,” Nicolai nodded as he stared at the man with a smile on his face. “A man who chose to follow that cheater and coward instead of my mother just because he thought it was embarrassing to follow my mother can never understand such a highly intelligible concept.”
Carcel’s face turned but that had nothing to do with Mister Harlow. He looked at the man and said, “You are going to marry my daughter, right? You agree, right? Because if you don’t, then I will send these pieces of evidence to the police.”
“Don’t worry, my dear man. You have my word,” Nicolai nodded as he confirmed.

“What did you say?” Mateo looked at Penelope with a shocked look on his face.
“I said I am marrying Nicolai.” Penelope raised her head and stated with a proud smile on her face. She shot a proactive look at Ariana, who was frowning, and stated, “Guess what? He finally realised that he was making a mistake by rejecting me again and again and chose to marry me now that he understood what he was missing out on.”
