Chapter 559: Torn relations
Everyone was shocked by Theodore’s loss of composure; after all, Theodore had never lost his temper in such a grave manner before.

Even Penelope, who expected it, was stunned. She eyed the man in front of her before biting her lower lip. With her hand touching her cheek, she glared at him before spitting out, “Fine!”

She didn’t want to do this but Theodore left her with no choice. Penelope knew that her place in this family was gone and she had only one chance to live a life of comfort and that was to marry Nicolai. For that, she wouldn’t hesitate to throw this family away.

She turned on her feet and marched towards her room but when she walked past Ariana, Penelope paused and sneered, “It seems like your worth is just this much; in the end, he chose me.”

Ariana calmly smiled at Penelope. She was unbothered by her provocation as she said to her, “I don’t know about you but my worth is not measured by the kind of man who is standing by my side. I have enough assets of my own to show off, instead of hopping while relying on a man.”

Her words wiped the smirk off Penelope’s face, who glared at her before storming away. However, once the woman was gone, Ariana could no longer smile as she felt rather unsettled and upset.

She was feeling a loss of composure and control over her emotions, which didn’t suit her at all.

Maybe she needed to get tested, though Ariana.

“Theo, calm down,” Kaylyn noticed her husband breathing heavily and patted him on the forearm. “There is no need for you to feel upset; please calm yourself. If not, it will affect your health.”

“That’s right, Dad.” Mateo, who was sitting on a chair with his arms thrown on the backrest, rolled his eyes and said to his father, “I told you that this daughter whom you have raised with such affection and pride, she is not what you think she is—just look at her for the sake of her own greed; she is willing to throw the entire family’s lives at stake.”

“The Serpents are not going to like this,” Keon stated with a frown. “They have been demanding an alliance for ages and we have refused them on the pretext of not being willing to align with either side. Now that the marriage talks between Penelope and Nicolai are going to spread out, they will certainly not sit tight.”

Theodore breathed heavily. He flared his nostrils and stated, “Just let the entire town know that she is not one of us. And that we are doing this as a last favour for all those years she grew up with us. Since she wants to cut us off, then we shall do as she wishes.”

He was naturally very disappointed by Penelope; he didn’t mind that she wanted to marry Nicolai. What he didn’t like was her wishful thinking and lack of regard for their family’s safety.

They could die, get into an accident or be assassinated when they were not paying attention.

And Penelope didn’t care about either of these things!

“Alright,” Keon agreed without denying.

Ariana watched the Ashford family arrange everything and sighed. She felt unusually tired and her temper seemed to rise and fall. Though she had it under control—

“Ariana, you don’t look too well. Are you alright?” Emil asked when he saw Ariana rub her forehead with her fingers.

“I think I am coming down with something,” Ariana replied honestly. “I think I need to get myself tested.”

“Then shall I take you to the hospital?” Emil asked and in response, Ariana nodded.

Kaylyn looked at Ariana with concern before saying, “You need to get your tests done as soon as possible if you feel that there is something wrong with you. There is no need to waste time on unnecessary things; we will take care of them.”

“I will,” Ariana nodded and replied with a smile as she took her leave with Emil and arrived at the hospital within a course of half an hour.

She went to the blood report centre and got her blood sample drawn out. Once she was done, all Ariana had to do was wait.

Because she was on duty at night, she decided to head over to the grocery store and pick up a few things. As she moved to the organic grocery store, which wasn’t far from the hospital, a bike came to a stop behind her not far from where she was standing.

Nicolai looked at Ariana, who was heading to the grocery store and his lips curled up in a satisfied smile. He was really terrified just now when he agreed with that shitty offer that Mister Harlow brought to his door but since Penelope dared to make a move on him, then it was only normal for him to retaliate. However, he did it without telling Ariana and it made him concerned. What if she had another episode?

But now that he was seeing her shop calmly, Nicolai could calm down. At least she was fine but soon he started to feel a bit annoyed. She was way too calm; was she that unconcerned about his supposed wedding with Penelope?

His train of thought was interrupted by the sound of his phone vibrating.

Nicolai frowned and fished it out only to see Ariana’s message displayed on the screen.

[What do you want to eat in the afternoon? I am heading over; there is something that I want to discuss with you.]

Fuck, she was so adorable, so it wasn’t that she was unconcerned, but she trusted him enough to talk to him.

[Are you on the table?]

[In FOOD, Nicolai.]

[Oh, you meant something other than your essence?]

[I can’t believe that I am saying this but yes.]

[I am fine with anything that you cook. Your cooking is delicious anyway.]

He would rather do something more productive than eating.
