Chapter 562: Are you jealous, princess ?
The guards, however, remained unmoved when they heard Penelope’s words. They have indeed heard and picked up a few words that were flying around in the De Luca mansion, as well as how this marriage was not something that could be called and accepted as acquiesced by both sides.
And the guards were not really welcoming of Penelope.
“What? Can you not hear what I said?” Penelope snapped with a look of disbelief. “I said I am the future mistress of this house, so get out of my way.”
“Miss Ashford—”
“What is going on here?” Zena appeared behind the gates as she glanced at Penelope, who stood on the other side. A frown appeared on Zena’s face when she saw the woman. “What are you doing here? I thought Nico told you that he doesn’t like bothering him.”
Penelope smirked haughtily when she heard Zena’s words. She crossed her arms and taunted Zena, “That’s old news, Zen. You might not know this, which is not surprising, as you are not really an important member of this family.” Tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear and giving a quick lick to her lips, she smiled at Zena, “But news flash, Zen. I am getting married to Nico.”
Zena, who had just returned, frowned. She wanted to refute but upon seeing the confidence on Penelope’s face, she couldn’t help but doubt her own judgement. Without quibbling with Penelope over the stupid comment that she had made, Zena turned on her feet and walked inside the house.
Penelope, on the other hand, snorted before turning to look at the guards. She snapped, “What are you waiting for? Open the damn doors.”
“Mom!” Zena stormed inside the study of her mother. “What is going on? Why is Penelope saying that she is getting married to Nico? I didn’t hear anything about it.”
If Penelope was the one who was getting married to Nicolai, wouldn’t the sufferings of her past and present make no sense?
Inez raised her head and looked at Penelope with a subtle frown on her face. She sighed and placed the pen in her hand on the table before saying to Penelope, “I didn’t tell you this because it’s a waste of time.”
“What do you mean?” Zena asked with her brows furrowed.
Inez exhaled heavily before explaining the situation to Zena; she then said to her daughter, “It’s not that we didn’t tell you but we had no time to tell you. It’s just been less than two hours since that girl’s dad came to blackmail us and now she is here. I am surprised by the shamelessness of her and her father.” Inez smirked before commenting,
“But then again, what can I expect from someone who lacks the basic decency of understanding her position after finding out the truth?”
Zena swallowed hard in disgust. She considered the words that her mother had told her, digested them slowly before saying, “Mom, you need to reconsider this marriage. It’s not only wrong but we don’t gain anything from this. Not only will Nicolai be unhappy with the marriage, but our family might lose the unspeakable support of the Ashford family.”
“Do you think I haven’t considered it?” Inez squeezed the side of her forehead before saying in a low voice, “I have and more than once. If anyone is to be blamed, then it’s your silly brother. How could he not clear up the traces of his involvement carefully; if he had, then nothing like this would have happened.”
Inez had no idea what she was more disgusted with, the fact that her son made such a novice mistake or the fact that she was getting Penelope as her daughter in law?
“Mom, is there nothing we can do?” Zena asked.
“Not at the moment,” Inez replied with a sigh. “We can only hope that your brother has a plan.”
She wasn’t exactly pleased with the situation. The fact that the Senate had suppressed her into making a decision against her will was enough to make her annoyed. But she trusted Nicolai to fix this mess. She knew that her son shared a deep bond with that woman he had been sneaking around with, just from the fact that he had stopped acting like a man whore.
And that assurance was all that she needed.
“Ms. Inez, are you in there?” Penelope knocked on the door, which was already open and peeked inside the office. She smiled at Inez with a polite expression, “Can I come in?”
“Will you leave if I ask you to?” Inez questioned back, causing Penelope’s smile to stiffen slightly.
She stepped inside the office before saying, “You are really funny, Auntie Inez. I understand where Nico gets it from.”
“No, he doesn’t,” Inez smiled back finally. “Because if he did, he wouldn’t have let a woman like you take hold of him.”
“Auntie Inez—”
“No,” Inez got to her feet. She was taller than Penelope and could easily tower over her and as she looked down on Penelope, the latter stepped away. “I know why you are here and what you are going to say; my response to it is the same as I have told your father. This is a marriage of convenience so if you are dreaming of taking over this family, you should stop.”
Penelope’s smile fell quickly. She clenched her fingers before saying, “I will be marrying him, so why—”
“You think a de Luca man can be kept if he doesn’t want to be kept?” Inez chuckled as if she found Penelope’s words naive and sweet. “You are wrong, Penelope. I am afraid you are forgetting that mafia men have more than three mistresses alongside them. The one who gives birth to the strongest heir wins. I think you do know it though, right?”
“He wouldn’t,” Penelope panicked when she heard Inez’s words. “You taught him to respect women and he will certainly not do anything to let me down.”
