Chapter 566: A brief talk
Albert brought Penelope to the office that belonged to Nicolai. He raised his hand and knocked on the door before saying, “Mister De Luca, I have brought Miss Penelope.”
“Let her come inside,” Nicolai ordered and the butler stepped aside to give way to Penelope. Penelope glanced at the respectful attitude of the butler; she raised her head with a hint of contempt in her eyes and stepped forward to walk inside the study.
Albert had been working in the De Luca family for a very long time; thus, he understood that the woman was looking down at him at once. However, he did not feel offended; if anything, he looked at the woman with a hint of pity in his eyes.
This woman dared to offend Nicolai; Albert had watched Nicolai grow up in front of him and knew that the ending of this woman was not going to be pretty.
Penelope, who had no idea about Albert’s thoughts, stepped inside the office. Once she entered the room, she saw Nicolai wearing a black tank top and leaning against the table behind him with his arms crossed in front. He raised his head when he saw her walk inside. “Close the door and sit down.” He ordered her and Penelope’s cheeks flushed red when she heard his words as she thought that Nicolai had finally thought things through.
Nicolai’s shrewd eyes fell on the woman who was blushing and he said to her without batting an eye, “Don’t use that barely available brain of yours; I have no intentions of doing anything to you.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Penelope, whose eyes were shining with anticipation, turned dim. She stepped forward and said to him, “Then why did you call me?” She even dressed up and prettied herself because Nicolai asked her to come and see him.
Nicolai pushed himself off the table and then walked around it before sitting behind it. With his chin tipped and a mocking expression on his face he remarked, “It seems you are a bit too keen to marry me, Penelope. Your desperate attempts to marry me make it look like you don’t seem to cherish your life too much. So tell me, what will it be? Electrocution? Chopped in two halves? Buried alive? I am fine with anything. As long as you do not haunt me, I am happy with any of these.” He paused while interlocking his fingers as he added, “In fact, I don’t even care if you haunt me as long as you stop pestering me and leave me alone.”
Penelope’s eyes widened and she stammered, “I—I never…”
“Are you going to say that you never wanted to marry me and that it was your father who magically found my address and then came to my house and demanded that I marry you?” Nicolai interrupted her and stated in a cold voice. “If you are then spare me your excuses because I know better than that. I hear excuses such as these all the time.”
“I had the money prepared, Mister De Luca. But my mother met with an accident; I just couldn’t help it.”
“I have a daughter; please spare me, Mister De Luca. I love my daughter very much.”
“Blah fucking blah,” Nicolai made a face at the end of the conversation and sneered, “I know liars like the back of my hand. You still want to lie to me, Penelope?”
Penelope gulped nervously and turned a bit guarded. She clenched her fingers as she bit the bullet and confessed, “It was not my fault; you did not leave me any choice. I asked you to marry me politely.”
“So the answer to my rejection is coercion and blackmail?” Nicolai asked as he picked up the coffee cup on the table and sipped from it.
“It’s not blackmail!” Penelope exclaimed, feeling a bit wronged. She just wanted to survive; why was everyone treating her like she had done something wrong?
“Then what is it? You caught hold of a little tail and went ahead and used it, tsk, tsk Penelope. I have to admit that I underestimated you; to think you played Maximus and I in such a fantastic manner.”
“That’s because I love—”
“Oh no you don’t,” Nicolai finished his coffee and set the cup down on the table. “You don’t love me at all. You love yourself the most, Penelope; there is no need to whitewash your pathetic lies. At least if you are honest with me, I will feel a bit respectful of your actions.”
Penelope’s expression chilled a bit. She really couldn’t understand why Nicolai was so cold towards her. She clearly knew him for a much longer time than Ariana and yet he refused to take her as his wife even when he knew that she obviously held some feelings for him.
“Nicolai, I will admit that I was indeed the one who asked that man to come and see your mother. But I will never admit that I have no feelings for you and you know that too,” Penelope refused to admit that she was using Nicolai.
Nervously, she tugged on the seams of her sleeves and then said to Nicolai, “I have been with you for ten years, Nico…Are you really going to trust someone else over me?”
Nicolai smiled and shook his head. “I don’t trust anyone who tries to play me like a fool and you, Penelope… you have tried it more than once. So pardon me for the lack of trust I have when it comes to you.”
He then paused and added, “But never mind; since you made the mistake of causing such trouble for me, then you will obviously pay for it as well.”
“What do you mean?” Penelope asked with her brows knitting together.
Nicolai smiled at her as if she had told him a joke before saying, “What else do you think? You were the one who started it and I will be the one who will end it.” As he spoke, he pushed the documents in front of him to the edge of the table.
