Chapter 568: Meeting with the Mother
“Are you happy now?”

Ariana was shocked and surprise when the door of her room was burst open and in came a raging Penelope. She sat up straight in her bed, with the book sliding to her lap and asked, “What do you think you are doing?”

Penelope stormed inside the room and then hurled the stack of papers in her hands at Ariana who dodged it with a slight turn of her body. She looked down at the papers that had scattered all over her bed and raised her head to look at the growling woman.

“Have you lost your mind?”

“Have I lost my mind?” Penelope chuckled angrily. “Ariana, you have snatched my parents! My brothers! My position! Couldn’t you have left just one person whom I love for me to take and marry?”

Ariana took a look at the content of the papers before arching a brow. She turned to look at Penelope again before saying coolly, “First of I didn’t snatch anything from you,I took what was mine to begin with. Secondly,” she picked up the stack of paper and then threw it back at Penelope. “Its your fault, it was you who wanted to force him into a corner and marry him. Who are you to blame me for the consequneces of your actions?”

And her words were enough to make the woman grit her teeth in anger.

In the past, Ariana had been wary of Penelope because of the position and power that the woman held, as she knew where she stood compared to Penelope. But she didn’t have to fear her anymore because now Penelope was no longer in the same position as she was in the past.

Penelope had done enough by humiliating her. Not only had she brought Ariana humiliation by spreading lies, but she had also brought her mental trauma. Now with their position changed, Ariana had no desire to lower her head in front of this woman anymore.

“Do you think he will continue to treat me like this?” Penelope stared at Ariana with an arrogant and stubborn glint in her eyes. “Don’t think like that. Love is fickle; once I marry him, I will make Nicolai love me like he has never loved you. Sooner or later, the love that he has for you will burn out and be replaced by a burning passion for me.”

Ariana smiled at Penelope politely before asking in a calm voice, “Do you really think so? You had more than ten years to make that man love you but you failed every time.”

She paused and then calmly said in a cold voice, “And now you have nothing. Even your family does not support you—what do you have that can make Nicolai love you?”

Her question struck like a sharp needle into Penelope’s heart, who glared at her before turning around on her feet and marching out of the room.

She was determined to marry Nicolai. Thus, the more he refused to get close to her, the more she was determined to cling to him.

She turned to look at the maid who was following her and handed her one hundred dollars before saying to her, “Keep an eye on her; make sure that she doesn’t get entangled with Mister De Luca. If you see her and him together, tell me at once.”

“Of course, Miss Penelope,” replied the maid with a slight bow.

On the other hand, Ariana looked at the woman who had left her room like a storm and had a grim look on her face. She was glad that Nicolai had kept her trust in him intact but at the same time, she was a little worried.

Because she knew that the more Nicolai stayed away from Penelope, the more that woman would be determined to get him.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone; frowning, she turned to look at the cabinet and picked up the phone. When she saw that it was an unknown number, Ariana hesitated for a few seconds but still answered the call.

“Hello?”

“Is this Miss Ariana Ashford?” the voice of a woman came from the other side and Ariana heaved a sigh of relief before replying, “Yes, what can I do for you?”

“I am Inez De Luca speaking,” the woman on the other side spoke in a calm voice.

The sigh of relief that Ariana released got stuck in her throat as she said, “Madam De Luca?”

“That’s right,” Inez responded. “If possible, I would like to meet with you.”

When Ariana arrived at the small cafe where Inez had called her, she felt her hands turning clammy as she looked at the woman sitting at the far end of the cafe with a grim look on her face.

“Forgive me,” Inez said to her when she saw Ariana walk over to where she was sitting. “I wanted to have a small conversation with you and before you get angry at my son—he didn’t say a word to me about you.”

“No—I am not angry,” Ariana replied with a light shake of her head, not knowing where to put her hands or feet. She had no idea how to behave, as the situation was way too complicated than she could have imagined.

After all, she was meeting with the mother of the man she was seeing before she could even clarify their relationship.

“Sit down, please,” said the woman and Ariana followed her command and she took a seat.

Once Ariana sat down, she looked at Inez and questioned, “Is there something that I can help you with, Madam De Luca?”

Inez’s eyes looked left and right. The woman then said, “It’s nothing. I just wanted to talk with you since you have already heard about the little arrangement between my son and Penelope.”

Ariana wondered if this woman was here to meet her out of pity or if she was here to send her away, as Ariana had been married before and compared to Penelope, she was not a good match for Nicolai.
