Chapter 569: Meeting with the mother (2)
“I did hear about it,” Ariana responded with a light frown while waiting for Inez to speak.

“Oh. Don’t look at me like that,” Inez smiled at her when she saw the frown on Ariana’s face. “I assure you that I am not here to hand you a million dollar cheque and ask you to leave my son.”

Ariana smiled at the light hearted joke before asking, “Then… is there something that you wanted to talk about?”

Inez pursed her lips, when she didn’t speak Ariana wondered if she had applied a glue stick on her lips instead of lipgloss for she seemed to be having a hard time prying her lips open. However, a second later she said to Ariana, “I have to say that I am quite surprised by your decision to stay with my son. I mean, it’s not everyday I hear a woman accepting my son for who he is instead of caring about his position and money.”

“Don’t tell me that he has his own good points when I know how wild he can be.”

“Nicolai is a good man if one was to look past his rough edges,” Ariana was quite surprised when she heard the words of Inez. As Nicolai’s mother, Ariana thought that she was here to criticise her instead of her son.

Inez softly chuckled. She said, “There is no need to tone down his madness. I know what kind of child I have raised; his attitude cannot be changed—it can be suppressed but it can never be taken out of him. You learn to live with it; either you go crazy with him or live long enough to learn how to deal with it. Like me.”

She raised her chin and then looked at Ariana, as if trying to read through her thoughts. She then softly sighed and remarked, “I don’t know what my son is planning but I assure you that he will never do anything to let you down.”

“As for that girl named Penelope, I will suggest that you steer clear of her path. I don’t think you know what kind of person that girl is—with her living in the same house as you, I will advise that you sleep with one eye open.”

Picking up the coffee mug, she sipped the coffee and added after a pause, “And keep your trust in my son intact. I promise that he will never do anything to hurt you—that is, until you stay by his side. If you let go of him, I don’t even know what he might do.”

With a light tip of her chin, she stared at Ariana, “Believe me when I say that this is the first time I have seen him make an effort. Before this, it has always been—she either stays or lives.”

“So I hope you will stay for the efforts that he is making.”

Ariana was quite surprised because she didn’t expect Inez to say such things to her. Once she finished listening to Inez’s words, she nodded and said to her, “I understand.”

“You better do it, unless you do not take my son seriously. Of course I hope that is not the case, because then you will see a side of me that you don’t want to see,” Inez warned in a low voice. “My son has suffered enough, Miss Ashford. If you are determined to leave him, then you might as well cut it clean and not leave him hanging.”

“Because I believe my son deserves more than just being hidden as a dirty secret.”

Having watched Nicolai grow up in front of her, Inez had a very clear idea about the fact that Nicolai had no intention to kill that woman. And even if he did kill her, it had something to do with Ariana.

Inez gave Ariana another look before remarking, “Think about it carefully, Miss Ashford.”

Ariana watched the woman rise from her chair and leave the cafe with her head held high.

Once she was gone, Ariana heaved a sigh of relief. Though she expected it more or less, Ariana was still a bit scared. She never thought that Inez could see through things clearly even without Nicolai telling her anything.

Did it mean that if she left that man, her life was going to be in danger? Ariana, however, didn’t feel offended; if anything, she was quite touched by the care that Inez showed for Nicolai. No wonder that man was so respectful towards his mother.

Even when Nicolai hid everything so carefully, Inez still found out about their entanglement, which showed how much she cared about her son.

Though it was hard for Ariana to infer what kind of person Inez was, one thing was clear: that woman truly cared for her son. Which might be the reason why she warned her against Penelope.

Away from the small cafe, Glynn was walking past the corridors of the De Luca mansion. She was looking around the house and while others thought that she was there for Zena, the woman was instead looking for someone else.

Her stormy eyes flickered before landing on a certain someone whom she was looking for.

She looked behind her and when she saw that there was no one keeping an eye on her, Glynn stepped out of the corridor and headed to the small arched marble dome under which Regal was sitting.

Upon seeing a maid trying to gain his attention, she glared at the woman before saying, “You are here? I have been looking for a servant to bring me a glass of water for quite some time. Go and bring me some!”

The maid didn’t dare to quibble with the woman and immediately left after complying with the order. Once the maid left, happiness started to bubble in Glynn’s heart when she saw Regal.

Regal on the other hand stiffened when he noticed Glynn looking at him as if he was a prey and she was a predator.

“You don’t have to act as if you cannot see me,” remarked Glynn as she sat down next to him. “I know that you know I am here.”
