Chapter 582: Slow Poison
Ariana felt her heart thud against her chest when she heard Danny say Nicolai’s name.
She had to remind herself to not show the sudden surge of excitement that she felt in her heart when Danny said his name in front of her.
“Nicolai?” She asked with a calm voice even though her heart was galloping like a horse.
“Yeah, Nicolai. Don’t say that you have nothing to do with him—that fucking bastard was investigating me the other day. He wanted to make sure that I was really interested in men and not faking it to get close to you. Apparently, if I had lied, it would have led to my tongue getting ripped out of my mouth and force-fed to me,” deadpanned Danny.
Dear lord.
Please tell her that he didn’t do it but given how possessive Nicolai was towards her, Ariana knew that he must have truly done it.
On the other hand, Danny was still speaking, “And there is one more thing. He has been acquiring information about little tidbits about you. Like, do you really like to cook or do you do it because you were asked to by your mother? What is your favourite colour? What are your favourite desserts? Sometimes he corners me and questions me like I am a criminal. I am telling you if Trey gets jealous or misunderstands me due to this, I am going to haunt you and that bastard to death.”
“He is so freaking intense that I cannot even escape him—tell me, why is he like that? Is he planning to make you disappear from the world or something of the sort?” He paused before adding, “If I wasn’t sure, I would have thought that he was trying to chase you or something. But that cannot be right; he is getting engaged to that witch.”
Ariana stiffened when she heard his words and clenched her fists tightly. The pain was sharp enough to not only pierce through her skin but also her bones.
“Ari, are you okay? I didn’t say it earlier but you are looking sick,” remarked Danny.
“I am not okay,” she replied with a calm voice. She silently waged a war against the inky tendrils and the haunting voice that kept telling her that she would never be accepted by others for the things that she had done.
She was of course not okay as the voice in her head made her feel like less of a person.
With that voice telling her how she was a disappointment, was Ariana even ever okay? She didn’t even know when was the last time she smiled without Nicolai by her side.
She sucked in a breath and decided to take the first baby step. Ariana raised her head and looked at Danny before saying, “The engagements—it’s fake… He is with me; that’s why he is asking you all those questions. I am sorry.”
Danny had just taken a sip of his coffee; thus, the second she finished speaking, the man coughed out loud. He covered his mouth and looked at Ariana with shock in his eyes. His eyes also turned double in size as he questioned, “What did you say?”
“I—I am dating him,” Ariana knew that she was going to regret letting this secret out; maybe some might even think that she had lost her mind. Because who in their right mind would date a man whose hands were covered in blood?
But Ariana thought about how Nicolai had been hurt over and over again by her just because she didn’t tell the truth about them to others. He was right; just because he agreed to become her dirty secret, it didn’t mean that she should be treating him as one.
Danny stared at her as if she had popped three heads.
And he was supposed to be someone who listened but never judged. Bless her life.
She tried to even out her breathing and questioned, “Are you going to break up our friendship or tell me how I have let you down? If so, can you do it already? Because this stare of yours… it’s making me creeped out.”
“Ah, fuck,” Danny snapped out of his daze as he wiped his face with a tissue. “I am not breaking up with you, dear lord. Why would I do that? I was just trying to process that I didn’t mishear anything; I mean you and him? You are dating him? The Nicolai De Luca?”
“Is there something wrong with that?” She asked, feeling a bit hurt and angry because Ariana felt as if Danny was judging her relationship with Nicolai. She didn’t like it. Not him judging her relationship but looking down at Nicolai.
Sure, the man was intense and chaotic in his own way, but he had a good heart. At least he had never looked down at her or abandoned her because she was not in the right state of her mind. She still remembered how he told her that he was willing to stay with her no matter what.
“Oh my God, I hope you are not thinking that I am looking down on him,” Danny breathed out as he set the cup of coffee on the table. “I will never do that—I am just shocked that you chose him. I mean, you always went on about how you liked Noah because he was such a perfect man and he was so calm and collected. How he made you feel secure.”
“I was just quite shocked that your next man turned out to be so…chaotic, I guess? Don’t think I look down on you because of that; I mean, it’s your life—you can live it how you want. Who are we to say that you are doing something wrong?”
“You mean it?” Ariana asked. Was it really this easy?
Danny smiled at her and nodded with an encouraging gaze. “Of course. Who am I to tell you that you cannot like someone? As long as he is the right one for you, it’s fine.”
He took her hand and held it. “I am so happy and proud of you, Ariana. I feel proud, like some papa bear; at least now you are living your life on your own terms.
“You don’t feel like I have let you down? You always told me that you expected better from me,” Ariana asked while watching him closely.
