Chapter 586: Digging deeper into trouble
Anger flared in Penelope’s eyes and she demanded, “You better fix this as soon as possible. Have you forgotten? I am the one who is getting engaged to Nicolai; as long as I marry him, you can have that woman.”

“You better not think that I am scared of you; I am the daughter of the Ashford family. Even if they are not pleased with me at the moment, if I were to tell you about you, they would not leave the Serpents alone.”

“And what are you going to tell them?” A dark and husky voice answered from the other side of the call. “That you joined hands with me to deal with their daughter? If that’s what you want, then go ahead; I will wait for your family to make trouble for me.”

“You—”

“And don’t even start with me on the engagement. I am no fool, Miss Penelope; the reason you are willing to do my bidding is because your interests and mine are closely tied. Once you are married into the De Luca family, will you still be willing to listen to me?” Roman spoke in a calm voice.

His words caused panic to strike Penelope’s mind and she lost all colour from her face. She thought that she had hidden her intentions well.

With her arm stiffening with each passing second, she asked, “What did you feed me?”

“Nothing. Like I told you, it’s just a little pill to motivate you. The sooner you finish the job, the sooner you will get an antidote or else your organs will slowly start rotting.”

Penelope’s lips trembled in shock, and she didn’t know what to do at that moment. She turned and looked at her arm and noticed faint blue veins appearing on her skin; even if she had never seen a dead body before, she knew that her arm was slowly dying.

The pain in her arm was not reducing; if anything, it was getting more and more excruciating.

Realising that falling out with this man wouldn’t benefit her, she tried to flatter him again, “Master Roman, please don’t take my words to heart. I am in too much pain; please give me the antidote. I promise that I will send that woman to you.”

“Miss Penelope, I only believe in results. So unless I get my hands on Ariana, you will not be getting the antidote,” stated Roman before ending the call.

“Hello? Hello?”

“AHHH!” Penelope gritted her teeth, her frustration getting the best of her as she threw her phone on the floor. Truly, that bitch was born to go against her because of her; she was poisoned to die a slow death.

Knock. Knock.

Someone knocked on the door and Penelope heard her maid speak from the other side of the door, “Miss Penelope, are you alright?”

For many seconds Penelope simply breathed and didn’t answer.

“Miss Penelope?”

“Who are you yelling at?” Penelope barked at the maid. “Go and call the family doctor; tell him that I need him right now. I don’t care what he is doing; he needs to come here as soon as possible.”

The maid who was scolded by Penelope was stunned; she did not understand what happened to Penelope all of a sudden. However, she did not question her; it was better to stand as far as possible from this arrogant missy when she was breathing fire.

It took fifteen minutes for the doctor to arrive at the penthouse. Fortunately for Penelope, no one was at home at that hour and thus, she did not need to face the uncomfortable questions of her parents and her brothers.

“Miss Penelope, how can I help you today?” Doctor Tom asked as he set down his bag on the small coffee table inside Penelope’s room.

Penelope didn’t wish to show her ugly arm or tell what happened to her to Doctor Tom. However, she knew that if she didn’t, then she might not be able to get this arm of hers treated. She clenched her fist and then made up a random excuse.

“This morning when I woke up, I found my arm feeling stiff and the blood flow being slow and uneven. It seems to me that I was bitten by something poisonous when I went on the hike last week.”

“Is that so?” Doctor Tom was really alarmed as he knew that Penelope’s heart was not in a good condition. If she was bitten by a poisonous insect, then it would be really harmful to her. He immediately said to her, “Please show me your arm.”

Penelope hesitated, but after a little pondering, she took off her jacket while gritting her teeth in pain.

Doctor Tom’s eyes widened when he saw her arm. He remarked anxiously, “What kind of bug bit you? This is not good, it seems like the poison is spreading all over your arm.”

“Just do something! It hurts a lot.” Penelope cried in pain when the man touched her arm and started to examine the extent of how deeply the poison had spread in her arm.

Doctor Tom looked at the arm that seemed to be dead and frowned. He said to her, “I will take your blood sample for further testing; as for now, I will give you an injection to relieve the pain, as I am afraid that if I were to give you an antidote without testing what kind of poison is coursing in your arm, it will only be useless.”

“Will you be able to make the antidote, Doctor Tom?” Penelope asked worriedly.

Doctor Tom nodded and stated, “Don’t worry, Miss Penelope. It’s just a bug bite; your arm will be fine in no time.”

But Penelope knew that it was not the truth; she could only hope that Doctor Tom would be able to create the antidote after drawing her blood.

But Penelope forgot that if the poison could be so easily treated, would the lord of an underworld gang give it to her?

While Penelope was working on getting a way to solve the trouble she was in at the moment. A hasty and twisted rumour had slowly started to slither its way through the aristocratic circle.

“You mean to say that it was Penelope who killed her mother?”
