Chapter 587: Digging dipper into trouble (2)
“Isn’t that the case?” Inez sighed; she had no idea what her son was trying to do by making such sneaky moves but she was willing to do her part. If Penelope truly became her daughter-in-law, she would choose to stay in another city than with her.
She lowered her voice and then said to the woman sitting next to her calmly, “I heard it from someone in my circle that Penelope hired some killers a few days ago and her mother went missing just a few days after that. I am sure it has something to do with Mrs Harlow suddenly going missing.”
“I mean—I did hear that the family was in trouble because their eldest daughter disappeared suddenly. Who can be certain that they did not reach out to the daughter they have exchanged?”
Mrs Holman was shocked but at the same time thought that it made sense. “I—I have to say that I did not expect such a thing from Miss Penelope. I thought that she was a kind and gentle woman. Who would have thought that she was so ruthless?”
“True, however, in the face of benefits and money, who has the time to care about kindness?” Inez stated with a calm voice. She then added in a subtle voice, “But of course these are just rumours; Miss Penelope could have hired the killers for some other reasons?”
Mrs Holman’s smile turned stiff when she heard Inez’s words. Some other reason? How many reasons could a person have to hire killers?
Mrs Holman, however, was a smart woman. If not, her family wouldn’t have survived for so long even though they had relations with the underworld. She nodded and agreed with Inez, “You are right. We will never be able to find the truth. I will be taking my leave, Ms Inez. My husband seems to be calling me.” She then smiled and bid Inez goodbye before turning on her feet and heading towards the man who stood at the centre of the ballroom where the party was being held.
Inez stared at the woman and smiled satisfactorily.
That night, the rumours about Penelope hiring killers to silence her biological mother spread through the city via Mrs Holman.

Ariana looked at the flashy invitation card that Penelope had sent her deliberately and sighed. That woman really knew how to make things upsetting; to think that she sent the first card to Ariana at the hospital even though she could have seen it at home.
She set it aside without opening it as she had no desire to read the things that were written on it.
She had no idea what was going on with Penelope; the engagement was supposed to be held three weeks from now, but she pushed it forward by two weeks. And now the engagement was just two days away.
Knowing that Nicolai had no desire to marry Penelope, her heart was at ease but she still didn’t like that the name written on the card did not belong to her. She pushed herself off the chair and stepped out of the office; however, as soon as she stepped out, a bouquet of hyacinths was knocked to the floor.
In the past, every time this bouquet appeared in front of her, Ariana would be filled with a sense of fear but this time around her eyes stared at the bouquet coldly and she picked it up before throwing it in the trash can next to her.
Soon, she would get information about the person who was hiding in the shadows and trying to scare her, as she had already hired a special detective to investigate the matters of the past.
Soon, two days passed by in a blink of an eye.
Ariana stepped out of her room and looked at the grand decoration that Penelope had arranged for her engagement. She had to admit that the woman had done a really good job despite being the only one in charge of it.
The entire main hall of the hotel looked as if it had been brushed with magical ice. From the chandelier to the tablecloths and even the many lights and small decorative accessories, each one of them had a touch of icy coldness to it but at the same time, it looked regal and majestic.
Of course, if it were her, she would have chosen something far more simple.
“Are you alright?”
While she was looking at the decoration of the main hall, Ariana heard Emil’s voice from behind. She turned to look at her third brother, who was standing behind her and smiled at him, “Emil.”
“Ari,” Emil walked over to the side of his sister and looked at her with a touch of concern in his eyes. He raised his hand and brushed the lock of her hair away from her eyes and questioned, “Are you feeling alright?”
Ariana leaned forward and then hugged her brother. She was not much of a hugger but she knew that she had to if she wanted Emil to stop worrying about her. “I am alright.”
“Are you sure?” Emil knew that his sister had some kind of attachment with Nicolai; even though it was not clear, the way Nicolai looked at her was enough to show that there was something going on between the two.
Now that he was getting engaged to Penelope, he couldn’t help but worry about Ariana.
“I am sure,” Ariana nodded and did not delve deeper into the topic. How was she supposed to do that when she knew that this engagement was never going to be concluded?
Far away from the main hall, in a grand suite, Penelope’s green eyes were filled with pain. They were dilated because of the agony she was in at the moment while looking at her left foot that had started to rot just like her left arm.
She had pushed the engagement with the thought that once she was to become Nicolai’s fiancée, she would have enough resources to get an antidote for this poison, as the one that Doctor Tom created was not enough to deal with the poison.
But now that the reality about the cruelty of Roman started to sink in, her heart couldn’t help but be riddled with pain. Her leg was hurting along with her arm which made her nearly pass out and she could no longer stand up straight and sat down.

“Ugh…” the woman bitterly cried, while biting into her lower lip to stop her cries from echoing in the corridor of the hotel. She clenched the bedsheet underneath her and yelled inwardly because the pain was too much for her to withstand.
No more. She could no longer handle this anymore.
With trembling hands she reached out towards her phone and dialled a number.
“Hello? It’s me, I —”
