Chapter 588: Giving a chase
For the first time in Nicolai’s life, he felt that things were slowly spiralling out of control. No, of course, the plan was completely fine. He had that in control; he couldn’t ruin that but it was his temper that he couldn’t get under control.
He knew that he was heading down to a doomed vacation when he didn’t even talk to his mother and felt the need to head over to his psychiatrist and ask him for those fucking pills that he never took.
And to make things worse, Dominic believed that it was a really pleasant day to push his face into his own.
“I knew that you would come around,” said Dominic as he swaggered inside his room with a grin that Nicolai wished to wipe out. “I mean, even if you were not raised right, you are still my son. How can you not understand something so simple as what is beneficial for you?”
Nicolai didn’t say anything as he knew that he was not in any condition to speak at that moment. All he wanted was to let this rage out but he had no way to do it because the one person who could reel this rage that couldn’t be doused with water was Ariana.
And according to this stupid motherfucking plan, he couldn’t hold her.
All he could do was stalk her on social media like some stage five creep. He hated the fact that he couldn’t hug her, that he couldn’t hold her or act like a super clinger when she went jogging in the morning.
Even now he was battling this sudden sinister desire of watching the world burn and throwing the entire plan at the back of his head. All he wanted was to head down and claim Ariana in front of the whole world. She would hate him for that but who really fucking cared?
Because he was done being shoved in the back of the wardrobe.
“Nicolai?”
He raised his head and looked at Dominic, who was looking at him as if he had saved him from a burning building and Nicolai smiled. Not the genuine kind but the sadistic one. He got to his feet and whispered in the ears of his father, “Penelope is not the daughter of the Ashford family; Ariana is. Once this engagement is through, I believe the Ashford family will be cutting her off.”
Nicolai watched the smile slip off Dominic’s face and his own smile widened in glee as he turned on his feet and headed out of the room just in time for Regina to rush inside.
Looking at her panic-stricken look, Nicolai knew that she had heard about Ariana and Penelope. His smile turned even more unhinged as he headed downstairs.
“Honey,” Regina came to a stop beside Dominic, who was still reeling in the words that Nicolai had said to him; a part of him wished to ignore those words as he believed that Nicolai said those words to him just to mess with him.
But then he heard his wife say, “Honey—Honey, I heard from the ladies downstairs that Penelope is actually the adopted daughter of the Ashford family and that there was a mistake—they are laughing at us for bringing in the wrong daughter. Oh, what are we going to do now?”
Dominic staggered. He breathed heavily through his nose as he realised that he had been played by a woman half his age. No wonder Penelope was in a hurry to move this engagement forward.
“Darling—”
Regina rushed to help her husband, but she received a backhanded slap from him.
The sound of the crisp slap landing on her cheek echoed in the room and Regina stared at her husband in shock. Her hand flew to her cheek, which had been slapped and she looked at him in horror.
“Dominic, you—”
“How useless can you be!?” Dominic shrieked at her before Regina could even question him about his actions. His eyes went wide with rage as he stated, “You have been shopping with that girl for more than a week and you never found out that she was a fake good? Now, tell me what we are going to do.”
This feeling of losing the pearl only to pick up a marble was so much worse that Dominic felt his heart ache. Nicolai was chasing Ariana and he was the one who intervened and stopped him.
“I—I had no idea that she was lying all this time,” Regina felt upset. She thought that her husband was being unfair but she was not Inez, who had the support or the financial independence to stand up for herself; she could only swallow her grievances and state, “How was I supposed to know that the Ashford family mistakenly brought the wrong daughter home?”
“Shut up!” Dominic roared. His feelings were a mess and he needed an outlet to take them out; he glared at his wife and scolded her fiercely. “If you were half as intelligent as Inez, then nothing like this would have happened. It’s my fault for marrying a dumb bitch.”
He turned around on his feet and dashed out of the room as he was in a hurry.
Regina stared at his vanishing back before slumping down on the floor. All these years, she believed that she had done an efficient job by snatching this man from Inez. But in his eyes, she was actually a dumb bitch?
Furious rage rushed through her veins, which slowly died down. In the heat of the moment, Regina thought about divorcing Dominic; however, she soon calmed down as she knew that she couldn’t because she had no means to do it.
Far from the room where Regina was, in a small resting lounge, Ariana was nursing her feet, which were hurting due to walking in high heels. She sighed in relief when she took off the heels and hummed a soft tune as she placed her feet on the carpeted floor.
Even though she knew that the engagement was a fake one, her heart felt unsettled. Closing her eyes, she leaned her head back slightly to relax a little, as she did not wish to ruin Nicolai’s plan when —
