Chapter 592: Penelope’s true face
“What do you mean?” Mateo didn’t quite trust the words that were coming out of Penelope’s mouth. However, he still wasn’t cruel enough to watch her die in front of him. His mother raised him right by teaching him to even care for the life of a beggar.

And compared to a beggar, Penelope was still someone with whom he grew up; thus, he sent a man to bring Doctor Tom and Aiden.

“I mean it literally,” Penelope sobbed as she tried to make excuses out of thin air. Anyways, no one knew that she had tried to harm Ariana, so she could paint any kind of image in front of her parents and win their sympathy.

Even though she was a mess, she wanted people to feel sorry for her and treat her as if she was the victim of this cruel world. As for Ariana, whom she had sent into the arms of a ruthless mafia man, Penelope didn’t even think about her.

In her mind it was Ariana who tried to snatch the things that belonged to her, so what she did was nothing but simple retaliation. There was nothing wrong with what she had done; if Ariana stayed where she was and lived her life like a lowlife, which she was, then Penelope wouldn’t have bothered with her.

It was her fault for coming into her life and taking what was hers.

She wiped her tears with the back of her good hand and said to her family, “Someone cornered me a few days ago and they demanded that I drug Ariana and send her to her bed but I refused! Even though I don’t like her, I am not so ungrateful as to send her to someone with unclear and dirty intentions.”

“Because I didn’t do what they wanted, they injected something into my body and—and this happened to me. If I wasn’t trying to keep her safe, then I wouldn’t be in this condition. Mom, Dad, you need to help me—my life is about to be ruined because I protected your daughter while putting my life at risk here!”

Once she finished speaking, Penelope started crying; she looked terrified and scared, which made Kaylyn and Theodore frown.

Mateo’s brows furrowed as he turned to look at Nicolai, who seemed to be staring at Penelope as if he was looking at a clown.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone that something like this happened?” Keon asked Penelope.

“B—Because you all were already against my engagement with Nico,” Penelope’s eyes flickered as she came up with another smooth lie and blamed it on others once again instead of taking responsibility. “I thought that if I told you guys the truth, you would think I was lying and it was simply the consequences of my actions. And I was scared! You have no idea how scary those people were.”

The second she finished talking, the door was pushed open and Doctor Tom, along with Aiden, rushed inside.

“Oh dear lord,” Doctor Tom exclaimed when he saw Penelope’s condition. His brows jumped and he questioned, “Didn’t you say that you were bitten by the poisonous insect just on your arm? How come your leg ended up getting poisoned as well?”

“Insect?” Mateo caught hold of the important content and then turned to look at Penelope before he questioned her, “Did you not say that you were cornered and harmed by someone? What is Doctor Tom talking about?”

“He is confused!” Penelope shouted at the man while glaring at him. “He is confusing my illness with someone else’s. I don’t want such a quack to treat me.”

Doctor Tom was insulted when he was scolded by Penelope and said angrily, “Young lady, you shouldn’t be blaming me for something that you did wrong. I treated you according to the symptoms that you told me, if I had known that you were injected with something more deadly, I would have given you a full body examination and not just taken the blood from your arm.”

“It is not my fault that you hid the truth about your condition.”

Kaylyn’s frown deepened as she turned to look at Penelope; she questioned, “What in the world are you hiding, Penny?”

Penelope looked up at her mother with an innocent expression before saying to her, “I am not hiding anything! I told you the truth as to why I didn’t tell him the truth was because I was worried that my reputation would be harmed, as this matter is not honourable.”

“Lie,” Nicolai crossed his arms and looked at Penelope. As soon as he spoke up, he attracted the attention of the entire Ashford family, who looked at him instead of Penelope. “Continue lying, I will see how long you can keep up with these lies of yours.”

“I am not lying!” Penelope shrieked. “Why don’t you believe me? Did Ariana tell you something? Why would you believe her instead of me? She hates me!”

Theodore felt his head hurt with all the yelling and crying. He turned to look at Doctor Tom and Aiden before asking, “What can be done now?”

“I am afraid that nothing can be done now,” Aiden stated as he glanced at Penelope with a look of contempt and disdain in his eyes. “Other than amputating her leg and arm, there is no other way to deal with this condition.”

“Doctor Aiden is right,” Doctor Tom was annoyed with how Penelope scolded him but he still gave the Ashford family his honest thoughts: “The poison inside her body is not simple, which means that Miss Penelope’s leg and arm are now completely dead. Even if we try to save them, it will be all in nought.”

“What’s more, we don’t have the time to do so as we need to research the antidote as quickly as possible. Miss Penelope is born with a weak heart; if we don’t find an antidote, then I am afraid that the poison will spread to her heart. It’s better to solve this problem as quickly as possible.”

After he finished speaking, he shook his head and remarked, “If Miss Penelope had told me the truth earlier, we could have at least saved the poison from spreading by trapping it in her arm. That way she only needed to amputate her left arm and not her leg!”

“No!” Penelope yelled when she heard Doctor Tom say that they were going to cut off her leg and arm. “You can’t cut my leg and arm off! What will people think when they see me like this?”

“Are you sure, Miss Penelope?” Doctor Tom asked with a frown. “Are you going to keep these rotting limbs of yours attached and risk a failure of heart?”
