Penelope hesitated; she, of course, didn’t want her heart to fail but she also didn’t want to amputate her arms and legs. She couldn’t even get a heart donor; how was she going to get a hand and leg donor?

Now she was filled with regret; if she had known that this was going to happen, she would have never harmed Ariana. But it was now too late for her to regret.

“Doctor Tom, Aiden, can you wait outside?” Theodore requested with a humble smile on his face. “We will call you once we have cleared up this mess.”

The two men nodded and turned around to walk out of the room. Once they were gone, Theodore turned to look at Nicolai and asked him, “Nico, do you know who did this to Penelope?”

Nicolai offered a bored look to Theodore before replying, “I do know the truth as well as the ins and outs of the matter but will you believe me if I were to tell you that what she said was nothing but lies?”

“The sun will start rising from the west if a single word about her protecting Ariana and getting hurt due to it was true.”

“Why will I lie? I know that I was the one who took her place, so why will I do anything to harm her? Even if I send her away,it’s not like I will be able to regain the position that I lost,” Penelope pretended to be sensible as she questioned Nicolai with a thumping heart.

Hearing her response, Nicolai was amused. He laughed and then said to Penelope, “Do you really think that you did a clean job, Penelope? I am not called the underworld prince for no reason. Do you want me to bring the men you hired to kidnap Ariana?”

He then turned to look at Kaylyn and Theodore before saying to them, “She was indeed poisoned by someone but not because she was trying to protect Ariana but because she did an incompetent job and failed in sending Ariana to that man who has been after her from the day she was born. I bet that man was not happy when you failed in doing his bidding and gave you a punishment like he did to your mother?”

Nicolai then turned to look at Penelope, whose face was filled with shock and he arched his brows, “Are you surprised? Don’t be, because it was I who exchanged your photo with Ariana, causing you to fail.”

Something inside of Penelope snapped when she heard Nicolai’s words. If her foot was not broken in half, she would have jumped on Nicolai and scratched his heart out to see if it even existed.

“How could you!” Penelope yelled, completely losing her head as tears burst through her eyes. “How could you do this to me? I have loved you for years and years and this is how you have repaid me—”

Slap!”

“And this is how you have repaid us!?” Kaylyn questioned Penelope sharply, her hand raised in the air as she glared at Penelope with hatred in her eyes. “We have raised you for so many years; even when your mother and sister harmed my daughter, I and your father still allowed you to stay with us. We never once asked you to repay for the harm that your family inflicted on Ariana.”

“We never took a single penny away from you and let you live in glory like you lived in the past, even though it was unfair to Ariana, who suffered and received nothing but torment and harm at the hands of your selfish and cruel mother who took my daughter away from me! Yet you repaid us in such a cruel way?”

Kaylyn was disappointed in Penelope but more than that she was disappointed in herself. As she thought about this, she raised her hand and slapped herself.

Once, twice and —

“What are you doing?” Theodore clutched the wrist of his wife when he saw her hurting herself. He had never allowed Kaylyn to even get the smallest wound on her skin, so watching her slap herself made his heart hurt.

“I am punishing myself for raising such a selfish, cruel, and heartless woman!” Kaylyn snapped through gritted teeth. “I took pity on her because she was born with a weak heart and gave her everything that she wanted. I never thought that I was harming her because I always taught her the values of money and power and how to use it but in the end it seems like blood really does play a significant role!”

“No matter how good your teachings and upbringing are, the effect of blood will still show!”

“I should have sent you away the day I found out that you were not my daughter. It was my foolishness that allowed you to harm my daughter!” Kaylyn spoke harshly.

Her words hit Penelope hard and with her fragile mind, she could no longer hold on anymore. She raised her head and sneered at Kaylyn, “So what was I supposed to do!? It was her fault! Why did she not stay where she belonged? This family is mine! Nicolai is mine! The wealth and honour that come from the Ashford name are also mine!”

“She was destined to suffer because that’s her fate. Why should I suffer when I was born for great comfort and riches?”

“She took my good heart away and lived a healthy life; isn’t it enough? Why should she take my family away too?”

Penelope’s mentality had been twisted since she was young. Under Roman’s brainwashing, she was strongly possessive of the things which she considered as her own.

In her eyes, as long as someone threatened to take what belonged to her, there was nothing wrong in harming that person. Because he or she wronged her first.

When Kaylyn and Theodore heard her words, they were shocked and dumbfounded but the Ashford brothers were not because they had seen and witnessed Penelope’s twisted possessiveness, where she had killed a little canary as well as an innocent girl just because they took Keon and Mateo’s attention away from her.

Mateo looked at Penelope and sneered coldly, “This is your comeuppance. You should have stopped when you killed my beloved, Penelope but no, you had to harm Ariana as well. Now tell us where she is!”
