Chapter 594: Filing a complaint
“Gone! She is gone!” Penelope sneered. She couldn’t believe that with her lying in front of her family with a slow poison inside her body that was slowly eating her life away, they cared about that lowly woman who had ruined her life.
If only she had never returned, if only her mother had her wits intact, then she would have killed that woman when she was in her cradle; that way Penelope would have never suffered this humiliation and pain today.
“What do you mean, Penelope?” Theodore sensed that there was something amiss. He stared at his adoptive daughter and questioned again, “Where is Ariana?”
“I fucking sent her away to where she belongs,” Penelope shrieked. Though tears were falling down her cheeks, her lips were curled up in a mocking smile. “I sent her to the man who had been trying to get her all these years. Isn’t it good? Now that woman will learn her lesson of never stepping in between the life of others and staying quiet but unfortunately she will never have the chance to return or regret. Hahahaha!”
Her words echoed in the silent room, leaving an eerie feeling behind.
Kaylyn staggered as she almost fell on the ground but was caught by her husband.
“Penelope, you—” Keon made a violent move toward Penelope but Nicolai reached Penelope faster and —
“AHHH!” Penelope screamed as she felt something stab her left leg. She raised her head and looked up at Nicolai, who had used a dagger to cut through the skin of her rotting leg.
Even though the leg was a bit numb after it snapped in half, Penelope could still feel the pain, which left her speechless due to the anguish and the excruciating agony.
“You better hope that she is fine, Penelope,” Nicolai grunted as he twisted the dagger that he was holding in his hand and sliced the skin on Penelope’s leg. “Or else I will make your life worse than living hell.”
He didn’t raise his voice nor did he put extra force in his words. He was calm, so eerily calm that his words left a chill behind. A chill that crawled up and snuck right past Penelope’s chest and clung to her heart, making her shudder frantically.
Nicolai grinned at the woman who had started twitching on the bed before turning to look behind him and called, “Aiden, come here and sew her up.” His eyes continued to stare at Penelope as he turned around and stated softly, “We can’t let her die so easily now. Can we?”
Aiden walked inside the room. When he saw Penelope’s face turning paler by the second with blood trickling down the cut that Nicolai had made, he frowned but didn’t say anything and strode towards Penelope.
However, Nicolai’s words seemed to have left some kind of terror within Penelope’s heart. When she saw Aiden walking over, she shouted, “No! Don’t come over,” she then turned to look at her adoptive parents and yelled, “He is trying to kill me! He is trying to kill me, Mom, Dad. Help me.”
However, no one made a move to help her. Her parents looked at her with a torn expression which drove Penelope mad. She glared at them and shouted, “Why are you looking at me like that? I did nothing wrong. If you had sent her away, I would have never done anything to her. You brought me to your family and gave me this life. How can you expect me to struggle and suffer?!”
“It’s your fault!”
Kaylyn turned her face away before turning around on her feet and heading out of the room. She had raised Penelope with all her heart and soul; for her daughter, she even gave up on her career and became a stay-at-home mom because Penelope had a weak heart.
And after all those sacrifices, this girl—she actually sent her daughter to god knows where and was now blaming her for the wrongs that she had done.
Theodore stared at Penelope before speaking through gritted teeth, “You are right; we are at fault. We were too blind and believed in you again and again; we should have taken you to a doctor when Keon and Mateo told me that there was something wrong with you.”
“But your mother and I believed your sweet lies and thought that the two of them were thinking too much. After all, how can a seven-year-old be so unhinged? But seeing how you have grown up to become so evil and wicked, I realise that it was I and your mother who were in the wrong.”
He glared at the woman in disgust. “But you are wrong about one thing: this situation of yours has nothing to do with us. It’s because of your mother; if she had not replaced our daughter with you, nothing like this would have happened and how I wish you never came into our lives, Penelope Harlow!”
Penelope felt all the anger and blame drain out of her body when she heard her father call her Penelope Harlow instead of Penelope Ashford. She might be drunk on her stupid arrogance but she was not foolish enough to not understand that her family had given up on her.
Theodore shook his head and was about to chase after his wife when the door of the room opened and two policemen stepped inside the room.
“Is Penelope Ashford here?” one of the policemen questioned and Theodore wondered what else Penelope had done for the police to come knocking.
He nodded and replied, “She is right here but what’s the matter, officers?”
The policeman who spoke showed his ID to Theodore before disclosing the reason for his visit: “We are here because your daughter is under the suspicion of killing her biological mother, Marcia Harlow.”
As soon as he finished speaking, everyone turned to look at Penelope but she turned to look at Nicolai, who simply looked back at her with a calm look on his face.
And that was when Penelope realised how wrong she was in the past. Compared to Roman, who was like a hideous viper who hid in the corner and waited for its prey to make a mistake, Nicolai was like the king of the jungle. He didn’t hide; he didn’t shy away; instead, he attacked his prey with full force.
“I didn’t—I didn’t kill her; it’s not me,” Penelope stammered but before she could say anything else, Mateo stepped forward and said to the police officers,
“Officers, there is something else that we would like to report.”

“Mateo, NO!” Penelope shrieked, losing her entire head, when she saw Mateo stepping forward and filing a complaint but her pleas were ignored just as how she had ignored Ariana’s plight.
“My biological sister was kidnapped and I am afraid that she was behind it. Please help us, officers.”
