Chapter 597: Why did she lie to him (2)?
Nicolai turned to look at the woman who rushed past him and he was stunned when he saw that it was his sister.
“Zena?” He called out but Zena didn’t seem to have heard him; she rushed to where Noah was lying on the ground while the medical staff that had followed the police vans set down a stretcher next to him.
“Oh my god, what happened to you?” Zena questioned Noah as she cupped his bloody face in her hands. She then raised her head and looked at Ariana before snapping at her angrily, “Can you stop dragging my husband into such dangerous situations?”
What did his sister say just now?
Did she mention that Noah Nelson was her husband? Her husband? When did this happen?
“I didn’t mean to,” Ariana tried to reason with his sister. “I really never meant any harm to Noah.”
And why the fuck was Ariana not surprised?
“ZENA!” Nicolai stormed towards his sister and Ariana.
Zena snapped her head up and her face turned unusually pale, realising that she had blurted out her secret.
“What the fuck did you say just now?” Nicolai asked slowly; he knew that his priority should have been Ariana; he should be hugging her and holding her in his arms. But at that moment his fucked-up brain couldn’t keep up with the words that he had heard.
More than that, he was upset over the fact that Ariana had kept one more thing from him and with the condition he was in at that moment, Nicolai was scared that he might do or say something to Ariana that might hurt her.
So, he didn’t even look at the little liar.
She knew about this fuckery all along and she kept it from him.
Why did she do that?
Why else? Because she obviously cared about her first love more than you.
“She said that she is my wife.” Noah sat up on the stretcher and looked up at him, right in the eye. “She and I have married one another; sorry to tell you that you were not called to bless us with your presence.”
Nicolai’s jaw ticked and he glanced at Ariana, who seemed completely unperturbed by this information. So she knew it all along and still kept this piece of information from him?
He wished to question her but he didn’t trust his cloudy judgement at that point. So instead of directing his wrath at Ariana, he turned to look at Zena. He questioned, “Is this true?”
Zena’s eyes doubled in size as she looked at him with those innocent puppy dog eyes. She did it a lot when she was in trouble; every time she was caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to do, Zena would give him this look. But this was vastly different from sneaking out of the house and attending a party.
“Did you really marry this fucker, Zena?” He asked again, veins nearly popping out of his neck and at the back of his hand as he questioned Zena, “Have you married him? Did you really, of all people?”
She stole a glance at Noah, who was being attended by the medics, “Its not what you think, Nico.”
“Then what the fuck is this? You either married him or you didn’t!” Nicolai questioned as his gaze met with Ariana’s, who was staring at him and silently pleading with him to let this matter drop.
But he wasn’t going to. Not this time.
He had let Noah off a lot of times in the past because Nicolai knew that what he did was a dick move when he went for Noah’s ex-wife. And Ariana clearly had a soft spot for Noah, which was why he ignored his fuckery more than once.
But his sister was off-limits because he knew that Noah didn’t marry his sister out of goodwill. He must have approached her with the same intentions that he once had for Ariana.
He knew it was hypocritical of him to feel angry and justified when he did the same fucking thing to Noah. And yet Nicolai was not going to let Noah off for touching his sister and no one could stop him. Not even Ariana.
“Yes, I did,” Zena confessed. “But he —”
“I suggest that we drop this years-old rivalry, Nicolai.” Noah offered through his busted lip. “This way we both will get what we need and want. Its best for us.”
“My sister is not up for a fucking exchange!” He growled, his voice laced with venom.
“I never said that she was,” Noah arched a brow. He glanced at Ariana and turned to look at him after a brief second, “You and I both know that you didn’t approach Ariana out of the goodness of your heart, either. So why is it that I need to accept you dating my ex-wife, one whom I loved and still love but its not fine for me to be married to your sister. Its not like I forced or coerced her into marrying me.”

“You can open your heart and accept our marriage as well, just as I accepted you dating and chasing after Ariana. This way everything will be fine.”
“Not happening; I will never —”
“Can we take the patient to the hospital?” the medic asked nervously. “I mean the patient is losing too much blood.”
He then turned to look at Ariana and said to her, “You should also come with us as your injuries needed to be treated as well.”
Only then did Nicolai see through his red haze and see the many cuts and wounds on Ariana’s skin.
Fuck.
He was so busy looking out for Zena that he completely forgot about Ariana, and Nicolai had no idea what was more fucked up. Ariana looking at him with those eyes that were filled with pain or the fact that his sister was married to his fucking rival.

[Nicolai, how long are you going to ignore me?]
[I know that it was really a hard blow to you but can’t you meet me in the penthouse, for a few minutes? I am not asking you to spend the night with me. I know you don’t want to see me tonight.]
[Are you not going to even apologise for ignoring me when I was hurt?]
[I am sorry I hid the truth from you but Zena asked me to, she said that she will tell you when the time was right and as it was not my place to disclose her secret, I didn’t tell you.]
[Nicolai, please don’t do this.]
[Fine, forget it.]
Nicolai let the phone drop on the side of his pillow and covered his eyes with his arm. The last message Ariana sent him was three weeks ago and even though he had been rereading those messages, he couldn’t muster the correct words that wouldn’t sound like he was blaming her.
He sighed, wanting to hold Ariana but he was too far lost in his rage that Nicolai was certain that he was going to hurt her. Thus, he dared not call or meet her.
What he needed was peace—peace that would —
The sound of a notification popping up echoed in his silent room and when Nicolai picked his phone back up, the peace that he was waiting for was shattered until only crumbs were left.
