Chapter 605: The Masked Man was someone she knew all along (2)?
Ariana snapped her head up as she looked at her mother in shock. She hadn’t expected her to bring Nicolai up when she hadn’t even confessed the truth that she thought she had hidden well.

“What—how—I didn’t even tell you anything,” she said in awe.

“I am your mother,” Kaylen picked up a small pastry and brought it to her lips with her eyes twinkling. She said to Ariana, “Do you think that you can hide the little exchanges that took place between the two of you when he came last time? Not to mention you were quite upset when his engagement was fixed with Penelope.”

“Then why didn’t you—”

“Say anything?” Kaylyn shrugged as she brought the cup down and placed it on the table. “I was waiting for you to speak up, Ari. I am your mother; it’s my responsibility to make a haven for you, not to corner or treat you like you are my possession.”

Ariana blinked her eyes and questioned, “Then you… agree?”

“Of course,” Kaylyn replied without missing a heartbeat. She said to Ariana, “Don’t look at how I am now but when I was young, I had made my fair share of mistakes and troubles.”

“But dad—”

“You don’t have to worry about him,” she rolled her eyes as she stated, “Your dad was a troublemaker in his days; he acts like he is all refined and gentle but back in our days, he used to bully this poor little boy even though I asked him to stop.”

She frowned as she mused, “I used to help that boy a little because he was such a pitiful little thing and your dad didn’t like it. He was quite jealous of him.”

“A boy?”

“Yes,” Kaylyn scrunched up her face as if she was trying to remember the past but then gave up and shook her head before saying, “I don’t remember his name. All I know is that he used to live next to me.”

Ariana nodded before standing on her feet; she felt quite relieved after telling her mother about the little affair she had with Nicolai but before she could escape, Kaylyn stopped her and said, “When are you going to bring Nicolai home then? I believe that we should be formally introduced?”

She knew this was going to be brought up, which was why Ariana wanted to rush out of the greenhouse before it happened. However, her mother’s thought process was faster than her feet. She turned to look at her mother and while studying her closely, she told her, “We are not together anymore, so I don’t think that will be necessary.”

“What? Why?” Kaylyn asked, as she was sure that Nicolai felt and treated her daughter better than the rest of the women he was involved with.

“Something related to Noah and his sister.”

“His sister?”

“Noah and Zena are married; the two of them kept it hidden from him and, well, he was not a happy person when he found out the truth.”

“Well, Noah is your ex-husband—I can understand that Nicolai doesn’t like the idea of it,” Her mother stated.

“Noah didn’t like the idea of him getting involved with me either but I don’t see him beating Nicolai because of that,” remarked Ariana. “And I asked him to not do it because Noah saved my life and was injured. He cared more about his sister than my request of not bothering the two of them and living our lives.”

“Oh honey, men can be really thoughtless when they are jealous.” Kaylyn got to her feet and walked over to where Ariana was standing.

“I know but he still shouldn’t have done such a thing. I begged him to leave them alone and focus on our lives instead of more entanglement.”

Her mother leaned down and kissed her on the forehead as she hugged her. Her smell and warmth engulfed Ariana as she whispered to her, “Never mind; you can make your decisions as you want. Fall as many times as you want but as long as you get up on your feet, no one will say anything to you.”

Ariana wrapped her arms around her mother and sighed, to think that she was worried about such a simple thing.

However, she hoped that her mother would be able to hug her in such a manner when she found out about the next thing that she had been hiding from her.

The following hour, Ariana returned to the hospital. She went around the hospital as she checked up on the patients and was about to head over to lunch when she received a call.

Her eyes flickered with a hint of softness as she picked up the call and answered, “Hello? Right now? Okay, I am coming.”

Back in the Ashford mansion,

Kaylyn was looking at the door of the house with a frown on her face. She asked worriedly, “Were you able to contact Ariana?”

“No, Mum,” Keon replied as he called his sister once again but couldn’t get through just like in the morning. It only heightened his worries. According to the hospital staff, Ariana left the hospital on her own but she never returned. Where did she go and why couldn’t her phone be reached?

He was about to call Emil, who went to look for Ariana at the Lonest City, as they thought that she might have gone to the old hospital where she worked, when the doors of their mansion burst open and strode in Nicolai, whose entire appearance was more unkempt than a beggar’s.

“Where the fuck is she?” he asked angrily. Things went downhill after he attacked Noah, causing enough trouble to make him busy for an entire month. The good thing was that Zena and her child were alive and fine; even Noah seemed to be doing alright.

The bad news: he had to accept Noah as he saved Zena from a certain predetermined death and Ariana was missing.

To think that she disappeared from the face of the world just when he was coming to win her back.

“What are you doing here?” Keon asked as he looked at Nicolai with a frown on his face. “We—”

“Keon,” Kaylyn intervened as she looked at her son; she turned to look at Nicolai when Keon pursed his lips and stopped talking, “We have no idea where she went, the fact that she left the hospital on her own accord means that she knew the person who called her but we don’t know who is it—”

“AHHHH!!”
