“What did you say?” Nicolai snapped his head up and turned to look at the nurse. His voice was hoarse because he hadn’t spoken a word in the past three hours.

The nurse raised her head and turned to look at Nicolai. She flinched slightly under his intense gaze before repeating, “The patient is one month pregnant according to the test reports. We need the signature of her husband to proceed with the surgery.”

Nicolai sucked in a breath as he recalled the night that he spent with Ariana before everything went downhill. Back then he was too livid to think straight and didn’t use any sort of protection. This child must have been conceived that night.

“What—who is pregnant?” Theodore was certain that there was a misunderstanding. Though Ariana had been married, she had been divorced for months. How could she be one month pregnant?

Don’t tell him that this child belonged to Noah! That man was already married again and was about to become a father as well. What would happen to Ariana and her child?

However, before he could question the nurse, Nicolai held his hand out and took the form from the nurse and signed it.

“Save—save my wife at all costs,” he said to the nurse, who nodded with a bewildered expression. Nicolai, being Ariana’s husband, came to her as a surprise because the two of them looked polar opposites.

Theodore looked at Nicolai and then at the nurse, who had already turned around to leave before something clicked in his mind.

“Nicolai, you —”

“You can do anything to me as long as Ariana comes out of the emergency room, Uncle Theo.” Nicolai knew that Theodore was angry; he had been obstinate in not letting his daughter get close to him and yet he had done more than just get close to Ariana.

Theodore opened his mouth before closing it back again as he turned around and held his crying wife in his arms again. It had been three hours since Kaylyn started crying and with how things were going, he had a feeling that she wasn’t going to stop crying.

Keon was pacing in the corridor but he did stop and look at Nicolai when he heard the nurse say that Ariana was pregnant. Nicolai knew that if it was any other time, the man would have rushed ahead and punched him in the face but right now nothing else mattered more than Ariana’s safety.

Emil was sitting next to his parents; his eyes were staring at the emergency room with a haunted look in his eyes and no one knew whether he heard the nurse or not.

Another six hours passed by but the doors of the emergency room stayed closed. Mateo, who had gone to a conference, flew back home and rushed inside the hospital and demanded to know what happened.

And just like that, Nicolai was forced to recall every single detail that took place after they found Ariana. Kayden drove them to the hospital like a madman while Nicolai pleaded with him to drive faster.

At the same time, while he was keeping pressure on Ariana’s bosom, Zena helped Ariana breathe as she blew air in her mouth, making sure that her staggering breath wouldn’t collapse.

The bleeding never stopped, not even for a second, dying the entire car red but Nicolai didn’t care that his car that he loved so much was getting covered in blood.

Because more than the blood getting on the covers of his car seat, his heart was worried about Ariana’s pulse that continued to fall until it was almost non-existent.

He begged her to not let go of him.

However, with each passing second, her skin went a degree colder and her lips turned blue.

Seeing her like that, he couldn’t help but plead with the big brother up in the sky, even though they had a feud that started when he turned ten and ever since then Nicolai had never talked with him.

But now he did. He was willing to serve his head on a platter if it meant bringing Ariana back to life.

He couldn’t live without her.

There was no reason for him to do so.

“I told you that something was wrong with her; why didn’t you listen to me!” Mateo snapped behind him. His voice was trembling with rage as he questioned his parents. “I told you that there was something more to the incident but you refused to listen. You all thought that Ariana would tell you the truth once she was comfortable with our family but I said, “That’s not how it works!”

“You should have pushed her into telling more about her past. You should have demanded answers and should have made her tell what that woman did to her.”

“Calm the fuck down, Matt. You don’t know what happened.” Keon pulled his brother back as Kaylyn’s cries turned even louder. Clearly she was blaming herself even more.

After all, she knew that this entire mess started because of her. She underestimated Jeremy and his obsession; if she had been careful and noticed the signs instead of ignoring them, then Ariana wouldn’t have suffered in such a terrible way.

Twenty years! His Ari suffered that kind of pain for more than twenty years. Why? All because she was worried about this and that. She might as well have awakened as a superhero with how much she cared about others. She protected the peace of others more than her own. But sorry, he was not the same.

He didn’t have a single bone in his body that could make him worry about the world. So, he showed the truth to Kaylyn and Theodore for it was them who didn’t take care of Jeremy as well as Killian because it was about time he got his head out of his head and started caring more about his family’s mess than the reputation of the company and the Nelson name.

He reached her when Ariana stabbed herself but he was still a second too late as he couldn’t save her. Who could understand his fucking pain? Nicolai was sure that no one could feel how it felt to watch their world upside down better than he did at that moment.

When Ariana fell on the floor, it was not just her body that hit the cold marble floor. Somewhere along with her, his heart and soul also dipped down. And he was sure that he left them there bleeding and blaming themselves for not putting Ariana before the rest.

Why didn’t he do it? His sister had Noah but what about Ariana?
