Chapter 612: Want him dead
Kaylyn’s sobs turned even harder as she muttered, “It’s all my fault.”
“No—”
“There is no need to lie to me, Theo,” Kaylyn snapped. Her eyes were filled with anguish when she thought about how her daughter had to suffer in her place. When she saw that video, she fainted, and even now she felt her stomach coil with disgust when she recalled parts of it.
Her daughter. Her Ariana had to go through all of that; she couldn’t even imagine how helpless she must have felt.
“I knew that Marcia hated me; there was a time she called me and laughed in my face. She was drunk out of her mind and continued to tell me that I had lost what mattered the most and that she was going to ruin it all. I thought that she was talking about our parents but I didn’t bother with her because I don’t mind my parents giving me up for adoption.”
She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and continued, “In a way they did me a favour because I was adopted by my dad and was able to get the necessary treatment that I needed. But I never thought that Marcia would do such a thing. She was actually talking about our daughter, Theo! Our daughter, if I had been a bit more careful, then I am sure I would have traced something back.”
Theodore clutched her by her shoulders and stated, “If anyone is to blame for this, then it’s me. You should blame me. I was the one who failed to deal with Jeremy. Back then I knew that the man had some intentions towards you but I never thought that his obsession with you ran so deep. I knew that there was something wrong with him but I kept it to myself and never told you about it.”
His eyes were filled with dread as he brought his hands to his face and covered it. “I was the one who underestimated that man; if only I had seen it through.”
“You wouldn’t have been able to see through him,” Nicolai turned to glance at Noah, who had been sitting in the corner silently. He sympathised with the man for the first time because tonight not only did he lose the one person he respected but also his parents. In one single night.
Noah curled his lips and remarked, “Even I couldn’t see through him. He was right beside me, manipulating me into hating Ariana and making sure that I didn’t ‘taint’ her and yet I never caught a single thing. Fuck, I didn’t even notice that he was my father.”
He raised his hands and scrubbed his face roughly. Zena walked over to him and placed a soothing hand on his shoulder but Nicolai was certain that it did nothing.
Because Nicolai knew what Noah was feeling at the moment.
“If only I knew that she was going through such a torment,” Keon remarked in a hollow sort of voice. “What’s the point of being called the smartest entrepreneur when I can’t even see through the pain of my own family?”
“There is no point in talking about this,” Nicolai spoke in a detached voice. “Ariana knows how to pretend that she is fine better than anyone; the facade that she has created is not something that just anyone can see through. So you all might as well stop with the blaming session; you know how she is. She worries more about others than she worries about herself. If you say such things in front of her, then she will only blame herself when she wakes up and would feel guilty. So you might as well stop now!”
Theodore opened his mouth but then he closed his eyes as his face twisted into that of anguish; beside him, Kaylyn’s eyes turned even more dewy as she tried to stop herself from crying any further.
Mateo, however, turned to look at Nicolai and questioned angrily, “Where were you? Don’t think that I am not aware of the fact that she is carrying your child just because I arrived a few minutes ago. I asked the nurses to keep me updated. So why is it that my sister was kidnapped right under your nose? Where were you and with whom? Who was so important that you left my sister alone when you knew what was after her!?”
“You are a useless waste of the fucking space if you can’t even keep your woman and child safe!”
Zena lowered her head behind them but Nicolai didn’t rush to help her this time because he saw Noah reaching out and patting her on the back. His sister already had someone to protect her and no longer needed him as her guard dog.
“Mateo!” Keon tried to pull him away from him but Mateo was like a bull. “Nicolai was the one who found Ariana; if not, she would have been —”
“You are right; I am the one to blame,” Nicolai spoke in a choked-up voice. “She asked me to—” he trailed off and closed his eyes with pain etched on his face. “Anyway, you can stop now. I will hear what she has to say to me; she is the only one who can blame me and no one else.”
Mateo snarled at him, “That’s some fucking bullshit, Nicolai. Even if she makes it out alive, do you think that her child will?”
Nicolai sucked in a breath and as much as he felt furious at Mateo for bringing this matter up, Nicolai knew that he was right. If the child doesn’t make it, he was sure that Ariana would never forgive him. If only he hadn’t left her alone, if only he had agreed to take her hand and let go of others. If only he had been quick enough to reach her a few minutes earlier.
If only he had been sharp enough to catch that bastard, then none of this would have happened.
But it was too late for him to start with the what-ifs.
Now he stood in front of the grim reaper, pleading with him to take his soul instead of hers. Because she was the only one who kept him grounded and made him feel alive more than anything else did. Even the rush of killing someone was nothing in comparison to when her eyes lit up upon seeing him.
He would do anything for those baby blues to open and look at him again with the same light as they once did.
So please—
Don’t take her away from him.
Because there was no Nicolai De Luca without Ariana Ashford.
