Chapter 622: End–part 1
“Are you happy now?” Noah asked as he climbed down the stairs of his mansion and looked at Nicolai, who was standing outside and listening to every word that he had spoken.
Noah believed that this was a personal matter that needed to be delicately handled but Nicolai refuted him. He said that Mia Nelson had once, not even a single time, treated Ariana with care, so what gave her the right to save her pride when Mia had never left any for her?
Nicolai raised his head and looked at Noah with a lazy look in his eyes. He pushed himself off the wall and then stared at him point blankly before saying to him, “No, I am not. This wasn’t about being happy or not; it was about making a judgement. I gave you the push that you needed; you should be the one telling me if you are happy or not.”
“Feeling relaxed?” he asked and Noah pursed his lips. He indeed felt a bit more relieved than he usually did.
Seeing that the man was not replying to him, Nicolai smirked and then turned on his feet before heading to his car. Noah chased after him and Nicolai turned to look at the man who was following him. “Why are you following me?”
“I have something that I want to say to Ariana,” Noah replied and Nicolai’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly because of his response but he still pursed his lips and turned on his feet before saying, “Whatever.”
His lips curled up in a smirk as Noah slid in his car.
On the other hand, far away from the Nelson mansion, Ariana called Nicolai for the third time after she finished eating her afternoon meal, which comprised of nothing but chicken soup, which was blander than the special diet her fake mother made for her to keep her in shape.
“I am sure he will come around,” said Emil as he took the phone that Ariana handed to him. He offered her an encouraging look. “If he doesn’t, then I assure you that we will have a good chat with him, especially Matt. He has been waiting to get his hands on Nicolai for a while now.”
“Is he still upset about me and Nico getting together?” Ariana asked with a polite voice, thinking that it was due to her relationship with Nicolai.
In response to her question, Emil’s eyes darted to her abdomen and he nodded before saying, “Something like that…”
The door to the ward opened and hope bloomed in her heart.
But as soon as it bloomed, it writhed because the one who opened the door wasn’t Nicolai who walked in.
Noah stepped inside the ward and his expression was so distraught that it made Ariana wonder if this man was the same man who had once been married to her. Because she knew Noah too well to know that he didn’t ever show his emotions as clearly as he was at that moment.
“Are you okay?” he asked as he staggered forward, looking as if he had gone on a ride all the way to hell. His hair was a mess; so were his clothes. He looked as if he was going to be violently sick at any moment.
Emil stared at the two of them before stepping out of the ward.
“I am fine; you don’t have to be like this, Noah,” she told him, trying to ease the tension coiled in his muscles. “It wasn’t your fault.”
That only made a vein throb in his neck, popping so thickly as if it was about to explode. “No, it was my fault and you don’t have to lie to make me feel better. If I had known —If only I knew, I would have shot myself after killing that man to make you breathe again, Ariana. I can’t even fathom how I am going to make up to you for all the hurt that my family had brought on you.”
Ariana’s lips part as she looked at the man in front of her in surprise. She stared at his tight expression and breathed out, “You don’t have to I am fine—”
“Don’t say that you are fine! If you are hurting, then shout and scream, damn it. Tell anyone that you are in pain; your life is not so cheap that you don’t even cry out when you are suffering. Don’t make light of your pain as if you are not worth anything!” His chest rose and fell heavily and the veins on his neck popped so thickly that for a second Ariana thought he was going to have a stroke.
“Noah—”
“I am so sorry,” Ariana blinked her eyes when she heard Noah apologise because he had hardly done that. He never said that he was sorry; in fact, Ariana was sure that he didn’t say these words even when he chased Zena away when her life was in danger.
“Why are you saying sorry for?”
“For everything!” Noah replied harshly. “For every single thing. For not trusting you enough, for leaving you alone with my mother, for trusting Ariel over you, and for letting Jeremy manipulate me into making me hate you even more. I am sorry for doing such things. I can’t apologise enough for making your life a living hell.”
“Its not you who made my life hell, Noah. I did that to myself,” she smiled mockingly as she continued to speak. “You were the only thing that helped me survive through those days. I needed hope and I clung to you. If anything, I should be the one to apologise; I took you as my beacon of hope and then used you under the pretext that I loved you when I just loved the kindness that you showed me.”
“What am I supposed to do?” he asked her as he sat down. “Should I leave? Will my and my family’s disappearance make it all better for you? I am begging you to tell me, because I would rather leave this city than watch you get hurt because of us ever again.”
Ariana patted him on the back of his hand. “There is no need. There is no point in blaming you, your family, or myself. It will only push me in the same hole where I crawled out from. What I need is to find the courage to face the monster who ruined my life rather than blaming others.”
Noah was glad to receive Ariana’s forgiveness. He reached out and opened his arms to embrace her and even though Ariana could have pushed him away, she decided to let go of the past that was haunting her for ages and slid right into his arms.
This was the first time that Noah had ever hugged her other than the time when they were kidnapped.
“I can’t say that I love you,” he whispered. “But I will always need you. I need you to know that you were the first woman I loved unconditionally and even though I was blind to not see it, I will still love you in my own way. I might have been a lot of things to you in the past but now I will be your protector. I might badger you but that’s only because I need to know that we are still connected in some way. Our relationship might be complicated, Ari… I can’t be your brother nor can I be your lover but if you call me, I will be there even if I have to crawl back from hell. And I mean it.”
