Chapter 625: Epilogue 1
“I would have liked you better if you had lowered that gaze before you chased after my daughter,” Theodore growled, as his inner feelings started to channel out of his heart.
“Dad,” Ariana looked at him with a pleading gaze and Theodore nearly stabbed himself in the chest with the knife that he was holding. Dear lord, his daughter was standing up for this wanker. He couldn’t believe it. Why this man of all men?
“Theo, stop. You are being very rude,” Kaylyn pinched him on the thigh under the table. She turned to look at Inez once again and remarked, “I swear he is nicer than this—”
“Of course, I do know that,” Inez smiled at her as if the two of them were discussing a child’s tantrum. Like hell he was throwing a tantrum; his baby girl, whom he didn’t even get enough time to pamper, was going to be snatched away and he had no way to stop it.
“I am afraid that it was impossible to do that, sir,” Nicolai smiled at Ariana before turning to look at him and saying in all seriousness, “Your daughter and I were meant to be, and there is no way I was going to have it any other way.”
That freaking arrogance! It reminded him of his teen years and Theodore wasn’t sure if he liked it.
But his daughter sure did, because Ariana ducked her head and smiled just as Nicolai leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Who knows what he said, but the gaze of his daughter softened and she nodded.
Theodore felt his heart swell because he had hardly ever seen his daughter smile like that and unsurprisingly, these smiles were all aimed at Nicolai.
It made him feel really shitty. He was the one who lost his daughter and caused her to fall into a pit of trouble while it was Nicolai who pulled her out. There was no worse feeling than knowing that you couldn’t help your children when they needed it the most and someone else took that place and responsibility.
“I was thinking of going for the fairytale princess wedding,” said Kaylyn with a soft look.
“I don’t need something so fancy, Mom,” Ariana spoke up.
“Nonsense, you are the daughter of the Ashford family. How can your wedding be a simple one? And you are our only daughter,” as Kaylyn spoke, she turned to look at Inez and asked, “What do you say, Inez? Do you want a simple wedding or a fairytale one? I prefer the fairytale one because Nicolai often calls Ari, his princess.”
“I believe that it will work just fine,” Inez stated as she cut a small piece of chicken leg and bit into it. “My son also wishes to have a wedding that will leave people awed. I hope you will not reject his ideas.”
She turned and looked at Ariana, who glanced at Nicolai.
“I also decided the wedding dress boutique.” Nicolai smiled as he served a large chunk of chicken wings and leg along with some mashed potatoes to Ariana. “They sell all kinds of princess wedding dresses. Once this little devil—” he glared at Ariana’s swollen belly and continued, “is out, you can try them on.”
“Don’t call him a little devil,” Ariana slapped him on the arm lightly.
“He makes you stay away all night long; what am I supposed to call him?” Nicolai countered.
“He just takes after his father.”
Nicolai choked and turned to look at Kaylyn before offering her a sweet smile, “I believe that a princess wedding will work just fine. If there is anything that you want to discuss, then you can discuss with me, ma’am. I will deal with it for sure, as Ari can’t do tiring work for the time being.”
“You speak as if the wedding will take place right after she is done giving birth,” Theodore commented dryly.
“Of course not, I will never do that to her. I just don’t want her to stress out when she is pregnant, sir, thus I will be the one taking care of everything.”
“Aren’t you the sweetest?” Kaylyn remarked with this dreamy expression, which made Theodore gnash his teeth in anger and frustration.
“I am, right,” Nicolai grinned like an idiot as he turned to look at Ariana and poked her on the cheek, “You hear that? Your mother also thinks that I am the sweetest.”
With each word, he poked her on the cheek, causing Ariana to swat his hand off her.
“Stop it,” she hissed out of embarrassment.
How he wished it out of anger and frustration.
He turned to look at Nicolai and cleared his throat, causing the man to stop smiling and straighten up.
“While I do understand that you want to marry my daughter, tell me, Nico. Are you doing this because she is pregnant with your child?” The last thing he wanted was a marriage of convenience for his daughter.
“Of course not,” Nicolai shook his head and then, with all seriousness, said to him, “The reason I want to marry your daughter is because I cannot think of a life without her.”
“Is this your way of avoiding me? Because I want a decent answer.”

“Okay, then you are the one who asked for this.” Nicolai inhaled and then exhaled before turning to look at him and then, with all seriousness, began speaking, “The reason I want to marry her is because she is responsible, caring, and kind. I like that she never gives up on her patient and would rather try till the end than give up. She cares for every life that can be saved. I like her cooking, her smile, and how she is so dedicated towards her own routine, which shows that she is really disciplined.”
“I like how she takes care of Timmy; its as if he is her child and it makes me fall in love with her all over again when I realise what a fantastic mother she will be to our children one day. I like when she laughs at my silly jokes even though I know that they are not funny. I also like it when she tells me about these medical terms that I do not understand but then she goes ahead and explains them in a way that I will understand. I like it when she stays up late in our bed and reads those books on medical science. That concentrated face of hers just makes me swoon. I also like her. I can’t live without them unless she cuts my tongue off but you know what? I will still like it.”
“And I also like it when she nags me to pick up my stuff and put it in the right place, nags me on how I need to eat more of a balanced diet than just protein and sugar. So, yeah—she is like the very existence that is keeping me alive and functioning. So, the reason I am marrying her is not because she is the mother of my child but because I can’t function without her anymore. Your daughter has freaking broken me, sir, and its only with her when my pieces are aligned together.”
