Chapter 288: Chapter 288 New Discovery
—

[Your Undead ‘Beginning’ is with an extraordinary material. Do you want to consume it to evolve?]

[Your Undead ‘Lily’ is with an extraordinary material. Do you want to consume it to evolve?]

—

Michael blinked.

“…Wait, hold up!”

This had never happened before, but after reading the notifications again, Michael quickly pieced together what was happening.

Magic items.

This was the first time he had ever tried to evolve an undead with a magic item on them.

No. It wasn’t the item itself, but the material.

Michael’s heartbeat quickened as realization dawned on him. He was about to learn something new about his talent.

“So, materials can influence the evolution of an undead. Does it change the race ahead or enhance it? And is there some kind of rule when it comes to using materials?” he wondered.

A flurry of thoughts raced through his mind, but he quickly decided on his course of action.

Michael wasn’t in a rush to evolve his undead again; instead, he shifted into research mode. The first thing he did was summon another undead orc, this one also donned in armor. He tried using his talent on it once again.

The message that appeared was the same as before:

—

[Your Undead Orc is with an extraordinary material. Do you want to consume it to evolve?]

—

Michael’s brow furrowed in thought. This was consistent with his earlier findings. Curious, he had the undead orc disarm and tried his talent once more.

This time, the message that appeared was familiar to him.

—

[Evolve to Rare★★★ for 25 Evolution points?]

—

Without hesitation, Michael pressed “Yes.”

The undead orc’s body began to glow as the evolution process kicked in.

Soon….

[Your Rare★ Undead Orc has evolved to Rare★★★ Undead Goliath]

[Your Undead Goliath has gained the skill {Greater Strength}.]

“Goliath?”

Michael murmured as he turned to stare at his newly evolved undead, a strange expression flickering across his face.

Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".

The evolved undead stood tall—eerily so.

Its skin was a dull shade of grey.

If not for its unnatural pallor and sheer size, one might have mistaken it for a living being—a massive, oddly silent warrior clad in death’s grace.

Michael stepped closer, inspecting the transformation.

It was humanoid. Bipedal.

Muscular in all the right ways, as if sculpted from stone.

Even the place below…..

“You look like something out of a myth,” Michael muttered, circling it slowly.

The Goliath’s eyes locked in on Michael.

Michael let out a low whistle. “Yeah… you’re staying on the frontlines.”

He checked the system message again.

—

[Your Undead Goliath has gained the skill {Greater Strength}.]

[{Greater Strength} (Basic Mastery) | Proficiency: 0.0%]

Temporary enhances physical strength.

At basic mastery, strength increase is 20%

—

“This is what a normal evolution would get me without using an ‘extraordinary’ material. So what would happen if I use it?’

Michael glanced at the remaining undead. Beginning. Lily.

Both still wore the items that had triggered the earlier message.

“Let’s see just how far this rabbit hole goes.”

Without another word, he activated his talent—this time, on Beginning.

The message returned instantly.

—

[Your Undead ‘Beginning’ is with an extraordinary material. Do you want to consume it to evolve?]

—

Michael grinned.

“Evolution points! Show me your limit!”

“Evolve!”

The moment he confirmed the evolution, Beginning’s body shuddered.

Light burst forth—not the brilliant white typical of normal evolutions, but a dark glow that pulsed with an eerie rhythm.

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

This was different.

Also, the pressure Beginning gave off was far stronger than the previous orc.

Following the scream of pain that came with the transformation brought from evolving, Beginning’s form twisted, bulked, restructured.

Michael couldn’t see well through the light but he could see the armour and hammer on Beginning disappearing.

Perhaps this was what the system meant by consuming.

The ground trembled.

Then, silence.

When the light faded, Michael stared at the figure before him.

[Your Rare★ Undead Orc has evolved to Rare★★★ Mutated Undead Goliath]

[Your Mutated Undead Goliath has gained the skill {Greater Strength}.]

[Your Mutated Undead Goliath has gained the skill {Size Alteration}.]

At first glance, there didn’t seem to be a change in Beginning’s status aside from a new skill…

No.

There was indeed a visible change.

For one, Beginning was significantly larger than the previous orc, despite retaining the same race classification.

But what truly caught Michael’s attention was a new term on the status panel.

“Mutated?”

That was new.

And Michael knew exactly why it had appeared.

It was without a doubt due to the consumed materials.

Michael tilted his head as he took a step back, trying to grasp the full scale of the change.

“Whoa.”

That was the only word that came to mind.

Beginning now stood a full head taller than the Goliath he’d evolved moments earlier. Its frame was broader, denser—not just armored, but naturally reinforced.

The musculature beneath its grey skin had thickened unnaturally, like it was perpetually tensed, radiating an aura of brute force.

Even the shape of its skull had changed slightly—its brow more pronounced, jaw thicker, teeth sharper.

There was a primal savagery to its presence now, something the standard Goliath lacked.

Michael glanced between the two undead.

The difference between a normal Goliath and a mutated Goliath obvious.

One had followed the intended path. The other had deviated.

And deviation, in evolution, was where uniqueness was born.

“This must be what happens when an undead consumes a material for evolution.”

Michael couldn’t say for certain.

But one thing was clear: magic items, or more accurately the materials in them, could radically alter the path of evolution

And if used right… they might even let him push his undead far beyond their base limits without needing a Rank breakthrough.

Michael turned to Lily next.

“You’re up.”
