Chapter 148: NPC Stories are important too… Part-1.
Bastille, Underground Sewer Tunnels.
“Look, I came all the way here just to buy this spell book; don’t waste my time any further… If you don’t hurry up, then don’t blame me later for beating the sh*t out of you!”
A woman wearing an oversized hoody glared at a thin and frail-looking old man.
Although half of her face was covered under a mask, just by looking at her light blue pupils, you can already tell that this woman is a breathtaking beauty.
The old man shivered slightly at her words and spoke in a panicked tone.
“C-calm down, Ms. Ensha. I got delayed because recently police raided one of my hideouts, and it took a lot of effort to dodge the chase this time…”
Ensha’s eyes turned serious, and she asked,
“Are you certain that you really threw the police off your tail? I don’t want to get involved with the sh*t that you have created for yourself!”
“I myself already have dozens of charges against me; recently, police have been tracking me even more fiercely than before…”
“Even getting into the city has become a very troublesome thing now… This is also the reason why we can only meet in this godd*mn sewer! Ugh…”
Ensha frowned and complained deeply.
“I seriously can’t stand how filthy this place is… Even my village, which is practically a slum, is better than this place… Well, this is to be expected of a sewer tunnel, I guess…”
Ensha took out a small bag containing several mana stones and handed them over to the old man.
“Take this; due to the police, my accounts have been seized; fortunately, I bought a lot of mana stones earlier just in case such a thing happened…”
“I will use these mana stones to buy that spell book…”
The frail old man grabbed the bag of mana stones with a greedy look and counted them with a happy smile on his face.
After he was satisfied with appreciating the shiny mana stones, the old man brought out an old-looking spell book from his space ring and then stuffed the mana stones in this space ring.
He then put on a mask and said,
“Okay, the deal is done; let’s leave fast; staying here too long is risky…”
Ensha also nodded her head. She grabbed the spell book, opened it, and found that it was the real thing, which caused a smile to appear on her face that was hidden under the mask.
“Good, now I finally have a grade 4 spell! Contact me again if you get your hands on any other spell books…”
Ensha waved her hand to say ‘bye’ and immediately cast her magic.
[Basic Magic: Float!]
With the help of float magic, Ensha immediately flew in the air and headed in a different direction than the old man had headed.
The two of them are used to dealing like this; they have been longtime partners.
For a long time, Ensha has bought all of her spell books and magic-related items from the old smuggler.
They have completed so many deals now that the two of them have mutual trust between them.
‘Sigh, if only there was a way to do things in a more legal way…’
While flying, Ensha couldn’t help but sigh at her situation; she was born in that hidden underground village.
Her mother died while giving birth to her younger brother, and the people told her that her father was punished with the death penalty by the court as he was a mass murderer.

From the start, Ensha’s life has always been filled with unlucky times.
Fortunately, the old village chief raised her and her younger brother as their grandchildren.
Ensha is much older than her younger brother; thus, she has always been responsible for taking care of him.
She spoiled the guy so much that he grew up as a cheerful and mischievous kid. Nonetheless, she forged a bright future for him.
On the other hand, Ensha herself went on to become a criminal with a dark future ahead of her.
She’s charged with stealing, murdering, blackmailing, etc.
As her village is poor and several of the people there die from starvation, Ensha just couldn’t bear to see it all.
She wanted a bright future for her brother and all the other innocent children in the village.
Once she got her hands on an abandoned wand while wandering in the mine, she found that she had some talent for magic.
She came to the city, stole some money, and bought herself the basic magic’s spell book. By learning it, she started her journey as a mage.
But this was just the start; she used that magic to steal more things and kill those who stopped her.
She blackmailed rich people to cough up money, and she even went on to raid and loot the people who wanted to leave the city and go to the outside world.
You can say that she’s more or less a bandit.
Even though she could have had a bright future, she could have left her village behind and could have earned a lot by becoming a model, as she’s incredibly beautiful.
Yet she chose not to leave and chose the most illegal method to help her village without even worrying about the consequences.
She knew that doing an actual job would indeed earn her money, but that’s a slow process, and the starving children in the village needed food urgently.
Thus, time passed, and she became a wanted criminal whom the police had orders to shoot at sight.
The only reason she’s still alive and kicking is because she always goes on to hide in the hidden village that is practically undetectable by anyone.
The reason why that village was so difficult to detect for even Jareth is because of the presence of those blue crystals that were suppressing the mana fluctuations in that area.
Even a grade 1 mage can’t find that location as long as those blue crystals are there.
Although Ensha herself doesn’t know why the mana fluctuations in that place get suppressed, she has always relied on them to hide herself.
Even today, she came out to buy this spell book as she was aiming to become a grade 4 mage soon.
If not for this spell book, she wouldn’t have left the village.
After all, every time she needs to sneak into the city, she will need to wait for weeks or sometimes even months to find a proper opportunity.
Going in and out of a city that is so heavily guarded that it can withstand any monster siege is not a small matter.
The city walls and even the sewers have mana detection artifacts placed in them; you need an insane amount of planning and luck to make it in and out unscathed.
Nevertheless, Ensha has done this many times now, and she has a certain amount of experience in infiltration and stealth by now.
Unless there’s a grade-2 or above-level mage in the city who’s scanning the whole city with his mana detection, none can find her now, as she’s just so good at stealth by now.
Fortunately for her, there are no grade 2 or above-level mages in this city, and even if there were, they wouldn’t waste their time scanning tens of thousands of people just to look for her.
…
Just when Ensha was halfway out of the underground tunnels, a sudden ‘beep’ sound came from her wristwatch, and the look on her face turned solemn.
‘Sh*t! This is a distress signal from the village! I was planning on buying a few other things over the next month and then leaving after stealing some more money, but I guess I should go back fast!’
Ensha doesn’t care about the world, but she has a soft spot for the village in her heart.
She grew up in that place and has always loved the smile on the faces of the innocent children that live there.
She doesn’t want anything to happen to her home, so she has no choice but to hurry back home.
She didn’t even bother to think if it was really a good idea to go back; she doesn’t care about her own safety.
Her younger brother is in the village too, and if something happens to him, she won’t be able to forgive herself for not being there to protect him.
She has given her whole life to create a better future for her brother and the other children of the village, and if something goes wrong with them, then she will really be broken from the inside out.
‘I need to hurry!’
Ensha increased her mana output, hurried out of sewer tunnels, directly ignored safety, and flew right out of the city.
Before the police could react, she had already left the sky of the city and flown straight in the direction of her home.
Even if the police tried to chase her, they couldn’t catch up with her speed right now, as she’s putting her all into rushing back home.
‘Please be safe…’
