Chapter 155: The Dungeon of Undeads! Part-2.
The other bandits also laughed heartily at those words.
Actually, bandits are quite rare in this world.
Society has shifted towards technology, and the lives of ordinary people have become much easier.
Thus, bandits and thugs are very rare.
But Bastille is different.
It’s a very isolated city and is surrounded by a vast desert! Nothing grows in this place except for some inedible thorny plants.
Most of their food is imported from outside.
There are only three sources of food in this place; one is imported food.
Second is the meat obtained from killing monsters that run rampant in the desert and often lay siege to the city.
And lastly, the meat obtained by killing the monsters in the dungeon and clearing its floors.
The city rewards the people who kill monsters in the dungeon and also buys the monster corpses from them at a decently good price.
These three sources are barely sufficient to meet the food needs of the people in this city.
The majority of dishes in this city are part of a non-vegetarian diet because meat is more readily available than vegetables.
Due to their importation from outside, vegetables and other plant-based food ingredients are extremely expensive.
Half the population in Bastille has never known the taste of Karela juice, which they consider to be their excellent fortune. (That sh*t is bitter as f*ck!)
These three sources of food are crucial to the survival of the city; thus, a lot of mages and warriors often go to the dungeon to hunt monsters.
And every so often, a few groups of bandits appear and ambush these warriors and wizards midway and then force them to give money as a ‘tax’ for traveling on a ‘non-existent’ road.
The city police often do patrols to deal with things like this, but there’s just no end to them.
Even if you exterminate one bandit group, a new one will appear in a year or two.
Most of these bandit groups consist of individuals who were exiled from the city due to their inability to pay taxes. Eventually, they formed groups and joined forces with random, strong individuals to engage in extortion.
Jareth is not particularly interested in charity work; he didn’t target the bandits because one day in the morning, a random thought occurred to him, like,
‘Oh, I feel like being a good law-abiding citizen today! So, Let’s butcher some bandits!’
No, Jareth’s decision to deal with them stemmed from his observation that their boss, a grade-4 knight, appeared to be an ideal practice dummy for Mark and Risa.
So Jareth just threw his two excited monsters-in-training at that group of pitiful bandits without a second thought in his mind.
…
Inside an underground cave.
“But seriously, the boss’s idea of creating a hidden underground cave and covering it with giant boulders to make it inconspicuous was really great!”
A bandit laughed happily as he gulped down a mouthful of wine in one gulp.
Another bandit nodded his head at those words and replied in an amused tone.
“Yeah! Furthermore, he acquired a mana fluctuation concealment artifact! With it, the patrol squads of the city police won’t be able to find up no matter what!”

“Boss is mighty!”
At that moment, one of the bandits’s wine jars got empty, and he said,
“Tch! Someone has more wine left? Pass it to me-”
Just when the bandit was about to finish his sentence, something flew to his side and directly landed on his wine jar.
The bandit was confused for a second, but when he saw the severed head of his boss placed in his wine jar, his face went deathly pale, and he fainted from shock after screaming loudly.
“AAHHH WHAT THE!!!”
Before the other bandits could react to what was going on, a giant spike of stone burst out of the ground, pierced their bodies, and turned them into human sieves!
Blood splattered on the ground, and internal organs fell everywhere. Some of the bandit’s brain got blasted by the stone spikes, and some had massive holes in their upper torso.
Those bandits who were more quick-witted dodged that initial attack barely on time, but then a pitch-black shadow enveloped the stone spikes and increased their length and lethality.
Causing the rest of the bandits to get caught up too.
Moreover, the ground became pitch black, and a hand made up of shadows tightly locked their feet, stopping them from moving and causing them to die on the spot after losing their ability to dodge.
With all the bandits dead, the shadows retreated, and two young people came in from the entrance to the underground cave.
“Hmm, the ratio was slightly off; we need to make our control over this combination spell more, and less control reduces its destructive power…”
Mark analyzed the performance of the combination spell he and Risa used just now.
The two of them have done this same combination spell quite a few times before, but even then, they have yet to reach perfect sync in this spell.
“It will take us some time before we can reach Professor Gazid and Professor Yoseh’s level of combination spell mastery…”
Risa also nodded her head at Mark’s words and replied in a calm voice.
Gazid and Yoseh have fought many battles together before, and from their past battle videos, you can easily see that whenever they use combination magic, it seems like it’s in perfect sync!
Even in Artavia, when fighting that death knight, Gazid and Yoseh were firing magic in perfect sync, as if they already knew what the other party was going to use and what they should use to maximize the power.
They both fight a lot on the surface, but no one can deny the fact that there’s not a single duo in the human empire when it comes to cooperation in fights.
It’s like they can read each other’s minds.
When Jareth and Shin or any other mage fight together, they use hand-sign language to communicate in a stealthy and fast way.
Sometimes they even use precise and specific words to describe the situation of the battle and pass instructions.
Mark and Risa are still just first-year students, so they have a lot to learn.
The university not only teaches you about magic; it also teaches you basic alchemy, battle tactics, mid-battle communication, practical combat, survival tactics, monster habits and skills, human and monster anatomy, etc.
In other words, those who graduate from Ivan’s Higher Arcane University are proficient in many things that can increase their survival chances by a lot, no matter what the condition is.
The reason someone as ‘weak’ as the original Jareth graduated from the university was because he received full scores in all his exams, except for practical combat.
And luckily, in Jareth’s time, the final test for practical combat was a dungeon survival; he easily survived it with his wits and tactics.
In other words, you can graduate from the university even with sh*tty combat skills as long as you score well enough in other exams.
Moreover, the teachers aren’t innocent; you can just bribe them to pass, and that method is even easier if you have the money.
All mages are selfish beings after all; they all lack resources and money; no amount of money is ‘too much’.
Taking money to create a backdoor for the students to pass is an underhanded tactic, but it happens so often that people have now become numb to it.
Even Nathan used to just close his eyes and pretend like he had seen nothing, as long as you gave him some part of the bribe you got willingly.
The whole structure is corrupted, as expected of a world heading for ruin.
…
After Mark and Risa confirmed that all the bandits had died, they left the cave, and Mark waved his hand and manipulated the sand in the area to directly bury the whole cave.
Now there will be no evidence left about who killed this group of bandits.
Although you can earn rewards if you tell the police that you dealt with the bandits, Mark and Risa weren’t interested in that meager amount of money.
They have enough money to buy the whole police department through bribery; why would they need such a small reward anyway.
Thus, the two just followed their hearts; they flew in the air and headed toward the dungeon with Jareth and Aria, who had been waiting for them all along.
…
After an hour of flying, the group reached the dungeon entrance.
After dealing with the bandits, the rest of the journey was very uneventful, so they didn’t stop anywhere and arrived at the dungeon before noon.
“Whoa! So this is how the dungeon near Bastille looks like!”
Risa’s eyes widened in shock as she saw that the entrance was a majestic and giant door carved out of stone with various traditional designs on it.
Jareth shook his head in response to those words.
“This stone gate was likely created by the city folks… This dungeon has one of the most amazing entrances, but also the most depressing insides…”
