Chapter 117: Winning Sophia’s Heart
On her way out of the mansion, going through the front entrance and completely lost in her thoughts, Amelia ran into Vera’s pregnant daughter, Naomi Anderson Whyte.
Naomi was carrying little Sophia in her arms while holding the little sleeping angel’s stuffed bunny in the other hand.
“Hello, umm….”
“Naomi…” The freckled face blonde beauty with hypnotic grey eyes smiled sweetly.
“Forgive me, Naomi. I’m still trying to get acquainted with everyone’s name.” Amelia forced a smile while stealing a glance at her cute baby bump.
“It’s okay. It’s always like that on your first day.” Naomi said, beaming. “Do you want to touch it?”
“Excuse me?” Amelia lifted her eyes to look at Naomi.
“My baby bump. Do you want to touch it?”
Amelia’s cheeks reddened. “Is it okay by you?”
“Of course!” Naomi adjusted her sleeping angel to expose more of her baby bump. “Touch it”
“Okay,”
Amelia took in a deep breath as she moved closer to Naomi, her heart racing fast. She gently placed her right hand on the protruding baby bump, stroking it tenderly and making Naomi giggle.
“This is a miracle.” Amelia’s eyes glistened with tears as she looked up to Naomi.
“It is and it could be yours someday.” Naomi patted her on the shoulder.
Then all of a sudden, Amelia jerked, moving backwards, while staring at Naomi in shock.
“What’s wrong?” Naomi asked, lowering her gaze.
“It moved.”
“Oh…you scared me.”Naomi chuckled sweetly.
“I’m sorry but it moved.” Amelia cupped her mouth, tears falling from her widened eyes.
“He likes you.”
“It’s a he?” Amelia asked staring at the baby bump, hoping to see some kind of distortion from the movement. But to her disappointment, there was none.
“Yes, it’s a boy.”
“How do you know?” The words slipped out of Amelia’s mouth before she could take it back. She suddenly felt stupid as Naomi replied still beaming sweetly at her.
“Ultrasound scan. I can’t wait to meet him in the next two months.”
“You already seven months down?” Amelia was astounded as her gaze darted between Naomi’s eyes and the baby bump. “But it doesn’t look like it.”
“Yeah, I get that a lot.” Naomi’s face was all flushed. “It runs in the family. We usually have small baby bumps.”
“Wow!” Amelia watched the sleeping little girl stir in her mother’s arms as if complaining about the noisy aunty disturbing her peaceful nap.
“Where are my manners? Can I help you with your little girl?”
“I don’t know… she’s very selective. She won’t even let her dad take her to bed.” Naomi frowned, stroking her cute daughter’s golden blonde hair.

“I could give her a try,” Amelia suggested, her eyes pleading.
Naomi shrugged. “Okay. But don’t say I didn’t warn you when she opens that little mouth of hers and starts wailing.”
Amelia laughed feverishly as she opened her hands, her heart pounding in her mouth.
—
Up the stairs landing area, Vera and Maria, who were passing by stopped to watch the two young women, their eyes glimmering with excitement and anticipation.
“Someone is going to be a grandmother really soon.” Vera teased, nudging Maria in the arm.
“I can’t wait,” Maria whispered dabbing at her flowing tears. “I love that girl so much. But I’m so afraid my son might hurt his feelings. I don’t think he loves her the way he should.”
“Ugh! Don’t talk negative, May.” Vera encouraged her sister-in-law, stroking her tenderly on the arm. “Look on the bright side. She has a vibrant and compelling aura that could capture any man’s heart. I strongly believe she would capture Blaze’s heart in time.”
“I hope so.” Maria dabbed at her tears.
“Look,” Vera said in a hushed voice pointing downwards.
“Aww!” Maria beamed sweetly. “She wants to help Naomi carry little Sophia.”
“That’s the problem. Sophia doesn’t allow anyone to touch her, aside from me, her mother, her grandma and sometimes her father.” Vera said in an anxious tone, worried that her cute grandchild might reject Amelia.
“Don’t be a pessimist. Keep an open heart and watch my daughter-in-law charm that little angel of yours.” Maria said proudly, rooting for Amelia.
“Fingers crossed.”
—
As if alerted by her mother’s betrayal of trust, little Sophia slowly lifted her head from her mother’s shoulder and tilted it backwards to look at the intruding aunty -who had dared to touch her arm. Her eyebrows came together in the middle and her forehead wrinkled. She stuck out her cute pink lower lips, and how cute eyes moistened.
“Oh no…” Naomi sighed.
“What’s her name?” Amelia asked softly, without breaking eye contact with the beautiful angel.
“Sophia,” Naomi whispered.
The little girl turned her scrunched face to look at her mother, sniffling a little, while communicating unspoken words of betrayal.
“I’m sorry, my cutie pie.” Naomi apologized, nuzzling her baby on the cheek.
Amelia stole one quick glance at the stuffed rabbit and kicked off her shoes, recalling one nursery rhymes she recalled from a distant friend’s child’s birthday party.”
“Jump jump jump, baby rabbits jumps,
Like mommy, like Daddy, baby rabbits jump…”
Amelia’s sonorous singing voice attracted Sophia’s attention at once.
Sophia stared at Amelia suspiciously, wondering how the strange aunty knew her favourite bunny rhymes.
“…Jump jump, jump, baby rabbits jump…” Amelia continued singing while hopping around Naomi who couldn’t stop laughing. “…Baby rabbits jump, like brother, like sisters, baby rabbits jump. Run, run, run and jump…” Amelia paused causing Sophia’s eyes to brighten as she waited breathlessly for the next line.
“… higher.”
“Higher!” Sophia chanted happily throwing her two little arms in the air.
“…higher to the blue, blue, sky.” Amelia stopped jumping and stretched her arm towards Sophia.
Without any hesitation, Sophia happily took Amelia’s hands and they both sang the rest of the rhyme to the entertainment of Naomi, the beaming mothers upstairs, Dylan and Jayden -who had secretly snuck out of their room, some of the mansion servants, and Henry, – who had come down on Blaze’s request to spy on his mother’s activities inside the mansion.
At the end of the song, everyone who was secretly hiding and watching Amelia’s performance came out and started clapping and cheering for her. The excited little Sophia cheered the loudest, giggling as Amelia tickled her.
“Sing it again, sing it again.” Dylan and Jayden, though older wanted to be treated as toddlers as they gathered around Amelia, pulling at her.
“No! No… She’s mine!” Sophia screamed possessively, wrapping her little arms around Amelia’s neck, with no intention of letting go.
“She’s our auntie too,” Jayden yelled back at his little selfish cousin wrapping his arms around Amelia’s leg.
“Let’s not quarrel, my cutie pies. I’m everyone’s auntie.” Amelia kissed Sophia on the cheek and ruffled Jayden and Dylan’s hair, hugging them to herself.
“You are a magnet for children,” Naomi whispered in Amelia’s ears clapping her for her.
“Thanks.” Amelia was completely overwhelmed, smiling and stroking all three children while appreciating the accolades that came her way. She blew kisses at the mothers upstairs and waved at the maids, before focusing all her attention on playing with the children.
“Ahem!” Henry walked up to her, smiling.
Instantly Amelia’s smiles vanished.
