Chapter 132: Short-lived Freedom
“Sir, you have a call.” The tranquil voice of the pretty young lady giving Jerry a kneading on his shoulder blade rapped in his ear.
“A call!” Jerry grunted, a deep crease lining his forehead.
He wasn’t expecting any call from anyone since only one person had this new line.
This person was his secret best friend, Tyson Palmer, a middleman for a notorious drug cartel in Salvine City.
Jerry had spoken to Tyson the previous day over the phone and the latter had advised him to go off the radar and avoid communicating with his family for the time being until everything concerning his messed up life in the city dies down. Tyson also promised to call him in a week to give him an update on things. So why the change in plans?
Jerry lazily lifted himself from the massage table and sat up. He signalled for the masseuse to bring his phone to him, as he picked up a glass of his favourite scotch and took a sip from it.
Life was indeed beautiful when you had freedom from a whining whore of a wife, a b*tchy mother-in-law and a vengeful ex-fiancee who is planning to destroy you.
“Here sir.” The masseuse handed the ringing phone to him with a smile and a polite bow, stepping backwards.
Jerry breathed in the relaxing fragrance from the burning scented candle as he brought the phone up to his face. But the sight of a ‘private number’ on his phone screen made blood drain from his face.
“Sir, is there a problem?” The gentle island masseuse asked in her foreign accent.
“What?” Jerry looked up from the phone, to stare at the young lady.
“I was asking if there is…”
“No…no… No problem.” Jerry forced a smile, trying his best to remain calm. “Can you please wait outside?”
“Okay, sir.” The young lady bowed again and left the room, shutting the door behind her.
“Who the f*ck is this?” Jerry queried his alarmed thoughts, standing up from the bed and adjusting the white towel around his waist.
Tyson would never hide his number while calling him and no other person had this new line except Tyson. So if it isn’t Tyson, then who was it? Could it be a friend or a foe?
“Definitely not a friend.”
Jerry contemplated whether or not to take the call. If his location was compromised, then that could spell doom for him. He waited for the call to end and tried calling Tyson on his private number.
It rang the first time but no one answered.
“Shit!”
He tried Tyson’s number for the second time, raking his fingers through his partially wet hair. He kept pacing up and down the room, different chaotic scenarios assaulting his thoughts as he waited breathlessly for Tyson to pick up his call. But again the call ended after ringing for a few seconds.
“Something is wrong.”
Jerry quickly changed back into his clothes and left the Spa house after settling his bills at the front desk. He briskly made his way to his hotel room on foot, taking a narrow path he had recently discovered and occasionally looking over his shoulder to check if he had been followed.
He had left Salvine city with the hopes of starting life afresh on this peaceful Brantin island, with a new identity. But currently, he had this unwavering feeling that the island was no longer safe for him and he needed to get out as fast as possible.
As Jerry got closer to his destination he received another call from the same unknown number.
Stopping on his track, he looked around his peaceful surroundings for any kind of suspicious movement but found none. He took in a deep breath and slid the receive button.
“Hello.”
“….”
“Hello. Who the f*ck is this?”

Again Jerry was greeted by silence and then the call ended abruptly.
“F*ck!” Jerry’s panic intensified. He ran the remaining distance to the hotel premises, glancing sideways and backwards.
Upon arriving at the hotel lobby with no hassle, he briskly made his way to the elevator. He was about to press the elevator button when he heard a feminine voice calling.
“Mr Shane.”
At first, Jerry didn’t recognize his false name. He pressed the elevator and even got in. He was about to punch the close button when he saw one of the female receptionists at the counter calling and hurrying towards him.
“Mr Shane, please wait. You have a package.” The olive-skinned lady with nice bangs waved at him as Jerry stepped out of the elevator recollecting that he was the Mr Shane she was referring to.
“Good evening sir.” The lady greeted, panting.
“Good evening, beautiful. Sorry, I didn’t hear you calling. I was in a hurry to use the restroom in my suite.” Jerry plastered a fake smile on his face while assessing some of the strange faces in the lobby area staring at him.
“It’s fine sir. You have a package delivery, sir. Please follow me to the counter to pick it up,” said the lady.
“A package delivery for me?”
“Yes, sir. Please follow me.”
Jerry felt an unsettling uneasiness at the bottom of his stomach as he followed behind the receptionist. He didn’t know anyone on this island and he didn’t have any friends. Aside from a few persons he had met on a professional level at the hotel, the spa and the bar, no one knew him. So how in the hell did someone send a package to him or was the name mistaken?
“Here it is, sir.” The lady pointed to a neatly wrapped square package. “Please sign here beside your name to claim the package.” She slid a register towards him on the counter.
“May I ask when this package arrive?” Jerry collected the ball pen from the lady with trembling hands and scribbled something that looked like a signature.
“Three to four hours ago, sir.”
“Who delivered it?”
“It was delivered by a courier agent. Is there a problem, sir?”
“No. There’s no problem at all.” Jerry rechecked the name on the parcel and saw his false name written in full with an initial at the end that made his blood run cold.
