Chapter 142: Apprehensive Mother
The airport was a little chaotic, filled with unseen faces hustling and bustling with their luggage to reach their destination. The sounds of people chatting, intercoms blaring, and suitcases rolling were enough to drown someone’s misery. But none of these could be compared to the emotional sight of tearful family members saying their goodbyes to their traveling lovers, children or friends.
One of such endearing sight was between Judith and her only daughter, Sarah.
This wasn’t the first time she had seen her daughter off to the airport or watched her board a plane. But something about today felt very weird. She almost cancelled the trip at the very last minute, if it hadn’t been for her son’s intervention.
All through the long drive to the airport, amid the frustrating afternoon traffic, Judith kept lecturing her daughter about safety and self-awareness in a strange city.
Even after they arrived at the airport and checked in her luggage, Judith still had one or two more advice to give. When it was finally time for her to let go of her daughter, Judith became all emotional, acting like a clingy mother who was about to lose her only child to the pleasures of the world.
“Make sure to give your dad and me a call once your plane touches down at the airport, okay,” Judith stressed as she hugged her daughter one last time.
“Okay Mommy, I’ll call you and Dad.” Sarah kissed her mom on the cheek, excitement bubbling in her voice.
“Also, remember, it’s your first time in Mega City. I do not know anyone there and I’m only allowing you to go on this trip because your auntie thinks you are ready to experience the unknown part of the world alone. Do not get cozy with strangers. Keep your pepper spray close to your side and avoid any deserted area.”
“Yes, mum. Can I go now?” Sarah pleaded, staring backwards as the long line at the boarding gate slowly reduced.
“I’m not done, just wait a little bit.” Judith pleaded, her heart pounding widely in her chest as if something bad was about to happen.
“Please darling, do not take your safety precautions likely. There are a lot of weirdos out there, with demented minds. I know you to be a very smart girl but even smart girls could be fooled. Once you arrive at the city, go straight to the music camp and when you get there, also give me a call. Alright?”
Judith stressed, almost pulling her ear while holding onto one of her daughter’s hand. She didn’t feel like letting go of her daughter even when she could hear the flight attendant calling all passengers for the stipulated flight to make their way to the boarding gate for the last time.
“Mom, you do know I’m an adult right?” Sarah replied to her mother’s question with a question, frowning. “Stop treating me like a five-year-old. I can take care of myself.”
“I’m sorry.” Judith heaved, releasing a sigh. “I’m just worried that’s all.”
“It’s a musical festival, Mom. I’m not going to a battle camp. I’ll be fine, so stop worrying.” Sarah kissed her mother again on the forehead. “Now go and be there for Aunt Amelia. She needs you more than I do.”
“I’ll wait until your flight leaves.” Judith insisted, forcing a smile.
“Goodbye, Mom. I love you.” Sarah waved enthusiastically as she picked up her hand luggage and hurried off to join the diminishing queue in front.
“I love you too, darling.” Judith waved back at her daughter, tears gathering in her eyes. She watched the flight attendant admit the last passenger before shutting the boarding gate.
After watching her daughter’s aeroplane take off from the floor-to-ceiling window, Judith let out a sigh of relief and headed for the exit terminal, where her car was waiting to take her to the unveiling event.
Thankfully, Judith was able to make it down to the event just in time for the photograph session. She stood beside her niece, greatly impressed by her success and the large turnout of people, inwardly saddened by Gregory’s absence.
The exhilarating photograph, interview and entertainment session took another three hours taking Judith’s mind off her daughter’s trip entirely.
However, as the sun began to set, bringing a close to the day’s event, with no calls from her daughter who should have landed at her destination more than five hours ago, Judith began to panic.
She hurriedly said her goodbye to Amelia, who was still busy with some guest and left for her car, dialing Sarah’s number.

Five hours, twenty minutes Earlier…
After Sarah successfully boarded the plane, she excitedly made her way to her seat only to find out that a pretty-looking young dark-skinned lady had already taken her spot.
The dark skin lady – who was dressed in a flattery playsuit that complimented her skin tone, with matching boots and a cat ear wireless headset attached to both her ears, – seemed to be on another planet as she was nodding to whatever music she was listening to.
Sarah double-checked her boarding pass to ensure she hadn’t made a mistake with the seat row and number. But there it was stated in black and white; 24C.

“Hello,” Sarah said politely, smiling at the lady while admiring her beautiful headset and her neatly packed curly hair. But the lady whose eyes were closed, didn’t hear her calling as she kept nodding her head to the rhythm of her music.
“Excuse me, you’re on my seat.” Sarah increased her voice a little, attracting a few people’s attention.
When the lady didn’t respond, Sarah forehead furrowed l. So she decided to tap her gently on the shoulder.
“Excuse me….”
The dark skin lady opened her eyes only to reveal a captivating sky-blue eyes that had Sarah hypnotized for a few seconds. She brought down her headset to her neck.
“Is something wrong?” The lady asked in a soothing and sweet voice that had Sarah’s heart melting.
“Umm…yes…umm…” Sarah smiled feverishly as she pointed to the seat. “That’s my seat.”
“It is…” The pretty lady’s eyes widened and she looked towards her right. “Isn’t this 24D?” She asked innocently.
“No…it’s 24C.” Sarah corrected, beaming, well pointing to the seat number. “The next is 24D.”
“Oh… I’m so sorry.” The lady politely shifted to the next seat making room for Sarah to have her rightful seat.
“It’s okay. We all make mistakes.” Sarah opened the overhead compartment directly above her seat and kept her hand luggage before closing it and sitting down. She listened to the flight attendants give the routine directive about safety inside the plane before fixing her seat belt for takeoff.
When Sarah looked to her right-hand side, she noticed the lady had fixed back her headset and wasn’t paying attention to the flight attendant who had advised everyone to buckle their seat belt. So she tapped the lady on the arm.
“We are about to take off. Buckle your seat belt.”
“Oh thanks, again.” The lady fixed her seat belt before turning to look at Sarah who was also staring at her.
“I’m Toshiba Helmet by the way. What’s your name?”
“Sarah Wales Hunt.”
“It’s nice meeting you Sarah.” Toshiba extended her hands towards Sarah.
They both shook hands together and instantly started talking.
While they where in the middle of an interesting conversation about a musical artist the air hostess brought their snacks and juice. In the process of serving them Toshiba mistakenly struck the glass of pineapple and orange juice on Sarah’s clothes, forcing her to leave her temporarily to go change at the convenience.
When Sarah returned the air hostess had already cleaned the seat of the mess and served a fres snacks and juice.
“I’m so sorry.” Toshiba apologize for the one hundred time.
“It’s fine. It was a mistake.” Sarah waved her hands dismissively.
They resume talking happily and eating ,forgeting about the little accident. They spoke alot about music, their favorite music artist, college, their girlish fantasies and lots more.
While they chatted, Sarah didn’t notice the devilish glint in Toshiba’s eyes, as she drank her orange juice which had been discreetly drugged.
After almost three hours in the air, the plane finally touched down with Sarah acting a little bit drizzy and delirious. She willingly followed Toshiba’s lead, who also admitted she was going to the music camp.
