Chapter 165: Guilty Conscience
Without speaking to the servants who were watching her act a little bit crazy, Gwen hurried to her father’s bedroom and started knocking repeatedly on the door but got no response. She tried to open the door but it was locked.
“Huh!” Gwen was stunned. It was unlike her father to lock his bedroom door. Where did he go to? Today is a Sunday and he doesn’t work on Sundays.
Snapping out of her worrisome thoughts, she hurried to her mother’s bedroom door and did the same thing but it was also locked.
“Where the hell is everyone!” Gwen yelled at the top of her voice. She hurried down the stairs just in time to see her mom coming out or was it sneaking out of the inner drawing room?
“Mom!”
Regina, who wasn’t expecting to run into anyone, flinched at the sound of her daughter’s voice.
“Sweetheart, you scared me.”
“Why are you acting weird, sneaking around in your own house?” Gwen asked, crossing her arm over her chest while eying her mother suspiciously from head to toe.
“What are you talking about? You were the one who sneaked up on me.” Regina said in her defence, grateful that she wasn’t holding her bag, which was carefully stashed away in the drawing room.
“Whatever. Where is dad and grandma?”
“Aren’t they at the dining table, eating?” Regina asked, looking a bit confused.
“I’m the one asking the questions, Mom.” Gwen snapped her finger irritably. “Stop giving me a headache by replying to my questions with more questions.”
“Sorry, honey. If they are not at the dining table, then they should be in their respective bedroom. Go and tell Sam to get breakfast ready while I call them.”
Gwen pinched her forehead in frustration.
“Neither of them are in their bedrooms. I’ve checked.” She half screamed.
“Seriously!” Regina’s eyes widened. “Have you checked….”
“Everywhere?” Gwen completed her mother’s statement in a repressed voice. “Yes.”
Just then, Sam approached the mother and daughter cautiously. He greeted both of them politely and told them breakfast was served.
“Where is my husband and my mother-in-law?” Regina demanded arrogantly, her eyes shooting daggers at the mature man.
“The senator left for the airport with Nana. Didn’t he inform you?” Sam asked, making Regina’s face crinkle even harder.
“Are you stupid? Who are you to ask me such a silly question?”
“I’m sorry, ma’am.” Sam kept his gaze lowered. “I only saw the senator go to your bedroom and knock on your door. So I assumed he informed you.”
“He was at my bedroom door!” Regina’s eyes widened.
“Mom, what is wrong with you?” Gwen demanded, hands akimbo. “You are still acting weird.”
“Nothing,” Regina replied sharply, taking a deep breath to compose herself. “Nothing is wrong with me.” She returned her attention to Sam.
“I must have been in the shower when he was knocking. I guess I didn’t hear him. Did he go alone or was any of his brothers here with him.”
“He went alone, ma’am. Although a doctor was waiting for him outside the mansion when I helped carry the suitcase.”
“The suitcase!” Regina felt a cold shiver run down her spine.
“You meant Nana’s suitcase right?” Gwen asked, ignoring her mother’s questionable behaviour. From the way her mother was acting lost, confused and easily spooked, one thing was clear to her. Her mother didn’t sleep in the house. She must have gone out using the secret passageway.

“Yes, Madam Gwen. It was Nana’s suitcase alone.”
“Oh… that’s good to know.” Regina nodded her head, exhaling. “Was Nana feeling alright when my husband took her out or was she still unconscious?”
“She was awake but looking very weak. The senator had to carry her to the car.”
“Hmm… Is she finally going to die?” Regina mused inwardly, a sly grin curling up her lips.
“Did you say something, ma’am,” Sam asked.
“No. What time did they leave?”
“Around 6:30 AM, ma’am” replied Sam.
“That is rather early if you ask me,” Regina noted.
“I can’t believe Dad didn’t bother informing me of this urgent trip. He would have at least allowed me to say goodbye to Nana.” Gwen let out a frustrated sigh as if she really cared about the old woman.
“You don’t have to feel sad, my dear. Your dad must have good reasons.”
“I doubt Uncle Matt or Desmond knows about this sudden trip.” Gwen hissed.
“I doubt that too.”
“Will that be all ma’am?” Sam asked seeing the two women were done with their interrogation.
“Yes…you can leave.” Regina shooed Sam as if he was an annoying buzzing bee.
Sam bowed politely and left.
“I have to inform your uncle about your dad’s decision quickly,” Regina said, walking past Gwen and climbing up the stairs.
“Aren’t you with your phone?” Gwen eyed her mother’s empty hands, following closely behind her. “It’s unlike you to move about without your most priceless accessory.”
“Not now, Gwen.” Regina rebuked sharply, increasing her pace. But Gwen was bent on knowing where her mother was coming from.
“I know you didn’t sleep in this house last night,” Gwen said in a hushed voice as her mother came to stand in front of her bedroom door fumbling the inner pocket of her dress for the keys.
Regina flashed her a nasty glare.
“Stop talking nonsense and go downstairs for your breakfast.”
“I’m not feeling hungry yet.” Gwen followed her mother into her room and locked the door behind her.
“So tell me mom, where are you coming from? One of your rich boyfriend’s hotels.” Gwen said wiggling her brows playfully as she sat on her mother’s bed.
“Gwen I do not have time for this. There are more pressing matters at hand. We stand at the risk of being discovered. Amelia and your father got into an altercation yesterday at Judith’s house after she confronted him with the truth. That is why he has been sullen since last night. It is our job to ensure he doesn’t believe anything she has told him.”
“How do you know he doesn’t believe her already,” Gwen asked, doubting her mother.
“Because your uncle is a genius and according to my source, she also accused your father of collaborating with us to ruin her and her husband,” Regina said beaming proudly as she dialed Matt’s number.
“Really!” Gwen’s eyes lit with excitement and a bit of curiosity. “Who is this source of yours?”
“It’s a secret,” Regina said clicking her tongue playfully, raising her phone to her ear.
“Good morning genius. Are you aware that your elder brother has taken your mother to the airport on a trip?”
“Yes, he told me. Where are you?” Matt asked in a cheerful voice.
“Where do you expect me to be? In my husband’s house of course and in my bedroom.” Regina cooed sweetly eyeing her daughter who was making annoying faces at her.
“That’s very good because I’m coming to you right now. I want you.”
“No.” Regina said frowning. She had barely recovered from last night sexual marathon.
A sudden knock on the door caused the mother and daughter to flinch.
“He’s here, isn’t he?” Gwen stood up from her mother’s bed, scowling at her as she left for the door. She opened the door and hissed, brushing past Matt without even greeting him.
“Insolent brat.” Matt sneered as he let himself inside Regina’s bedroom and shut the door.

Amelia and her husband were at the Salvine police headquarters, having a closed-door meeting session with the commissioner of police when she received a call from a strange number.
“Please, excuse me while I take this call,” Amelia said politely to the commissioner of police, before sliding the receive button. She brought the phone to her ear and said.
“Hello,”
“Amelia, there is trouble. I am completely ruined.”
Amelia’s forehead furrowed, attracting her husband’s questioning stare.
“Please, who is this?” She asked, not recognizing the broken voice of the caller.
“Is your godfather, Engineer Van Cobalt.”
