Chapter 173: Arrested

Matt could feel a tightening in his chest making his breathing laboured. He slowly loosened the tie around his neck, his pounding heart threatening to leap out of his chest as the next scene that sealed his fate unfolded.

“I want Blaze Anderson thoroughly dealt with and his property destroyed.” Matt heard himself say in the recorded video. “And when you are done with the hit, make sure you leave evidence that pins the attack to my elder brother, Senator Gregory Shawls. I want him to take the fall.”

“Sweet lord!” Someone seated at the table exclaimed out loud.

But another airing video showed all six of the accused, including Jerry seated inside the mansion’s inner living room. They were all brainstorming on how to silence Amelia forever while deliberating how to evenly distribute the money realize from the sales of her trust fund.

“No…” Gwen froze in her seat, her alarmed gaze shifting between her terrified mother and her bewildered uncle. “They had the house bugged with cameras?” She trembled in her seat.

As if that video alone wasn’t enough evidence to destroy Matt and the five completely, another audio discussion between Matt and the late Ivy was played to everyone hearing.

In the audio message, Matt instructed Ivy to ensure Amelia dies this time and as a bonus, take care of Judith’s kidnapped daughter.

“So all this while, you were the one behind Sarah’s kidnap?” Judith screamed at him.

“You are a monster, Matt and you will rot in hell for this.” Hillary patted his wife on the arm.

“I…I…I….” Matt stuttered, words failing him

“You what? Cat got your tongue?” Amelia asked mockingly.

“Or do you want me to expose a more intimate video?” Amelia asked narrowing her riled gaze to her fidgeting stepmother, who was now staring pleadingly, terrified of stepdaughter’s arsenal.

Lilian stood up unexpectedly, taking the stunned family members by surprise. She grabbed Matt by the neck of his jacket collar and dragged him up to his feet.

Before Matt knew what was happening, Lillian’s wide chubby palm came in contact with his right cheek.

“Lillian!” Matt yelled, his spinning eyes seeing stars.

Lillian gave him another fiercer slap on his left cheek.

“You heartless rotten piece of shit.”

“Well deserved.” Amelia clapped her hands, brimming proudly at her uncle’s wife.

“How dare you hit me?” Matt lost all control of his temperament as he charged at his wife, ready to beat her blue and black before the family. But before he could execute his mission, a strong hand caught his raised hand from behind and twisted it to his back, making him shriek in pain. He was forced to his knees before his angry wife.

“You are evil…” Lilian screamed spitting in Matt’s face, her cheeks flushed with turmoil and her eyes glistening with tears.

“…and I hope you burn in hell for your crime.”

“Mom, take it easy.” Matt’s disappointed son and daughter came to stand beside their mother. But Lilian, who had stolen the centre of attraction, had some things to get off her chest.

“For years, I have put up with you and your shenanigans. For years, I have tolerated your freelancing and extramarital affairs. You and that miserable wretch…” She pointed at Regina. “…call me a hippo behind my back. You laugh at me and call me stupid while you carry on with your greed. I was ready to take any shit but this is the last straw. I am done giving excuses for your sorry ass.”

Lilian dramatically took off her ring and threw it at Matt’s face, almost blinding him in the process.

“I’m taking my children and I’m returning to my parents. This marriage is over. You can keep your house, your money and everything you own because we would not suffer with you for a crime we did not commit.”

“But honey…”

“Don’t you dare honey, me ” Lilian removed one of her flat shoes and threw it at her husband’s face.

She turned to the senator’s wife, who was already on her knees beside her husband sniffling and pleading silently.

“And as for you shameless woman, always cozying up to my husband, making fun of me behind my back, I hope you get everything you deserve.”

“I’m sorry.” Regina croaked.

“Sorry for yourself.” Lilian retrieved her other pair of shoes and stormed out of the banquet room holding her two children by the wrist. Luckily for her, no one stopped her.

Desmond who was too shocked to say anything tried to call Lillian back, but his own wife continued from where Lillian stopped.

“Oh no, you don’t….” Desmond’s wife turned on him, hitting him on the head with her handbag while hurling insults at him.

Before the room could turn chaotic, Blaze invited the heavily armed police into the room.

The sight of policemen in uniform with rifles in their hands forced everyone back to their seats except for the culprits who were now on their knees begging.

“Officer, please do your job and arrest those criminals,” Amelia said pointing at all the accused.

“No!” Gwen cried out, crawling to her father’s knees. “Dad, please don’t let them take me. I will confess.”

“Is too late for confession.” The senator avoided her touch.

“My love, please…”

“Who are you calling your love?” The senator boomed at his heartless wife, his hands itching to slap some senses into her.

“You ganged up with my brothers and my security head to kill my own daughter. How wicked can you be? After everything I did to make you my wife simply because I wanted Gwen to have her legitimate right in this family. Is this the thank you I get in return?”

“I’m sorry.” Regina cried helplessly.

“No, Regina, you are not sorry. You are only sorry because you got caught on camera. It makes me wonder what else you have been doing behind my back.”

Regina shook her head, words failing her.

“Don’t worry, by the time I’m through with you, you will wish you never entered this family in the first place. Officer…” The senator looked up to the squad leader. “… Take this poisonous snake out of my sight.”

“Yes, senator…”

The rest of the family watched in silence, as all accused persons were slowly escorted out of the mansion in handcuffs. They were all crying except for Lin, her partner and Matt.
