Chapter 177: I’m Here For You
Amelia let out a sigh as she turned to look at Blaze, who was now staring directly at her as if asking her what the problem was. His gaze was gentle and filled with so much love, that it made Amelia’s cheeks give off a warm pinkish glow.
She blinked twice at him and it seemed he understood her as he smiled reassuringly at her while giving her the okay signal.
“Thank you.” Amelia’s lips moved without saying anything and he gave her a short nod of the head, meaning you are most welcome.
Turning to look at her father whose face was slightly flushed with jealousy, Amelia said in a rather cheerful voice.
“All right let’s go and sit down.”
The senator looked at Blaze whose attention was now facing forward and shook his head. He could tell his daughter was deeply in love with him, seeing how his mere presence or voice affected her behaviour. He wanted to believe that Blaze loved Amelia as much as he loved his late wife. He couldn’t bear the thought of him hurting her ever.
“Dad…” Amelia pulled at her father’s arm, jerking him out of his thoughts.
“Yes. Thank you, my dear.”
Amelia and her father had barely settled down when the bailiff’s high-pitched voice reverberated in the room.
“Introducing the honorable Judge Emmanuel Addams of the High Court of Justice. All rise.”
Everyone seated rose to their feet, a cloud of tension hanging over the room as the judge strolled majestically to his seat, oozing an air of supremacy and order. His olive brown eyes scanned the entire room briefly taking in those in attendance before he finally settled down.
Senator Gregory could feel his heart pounding in his ears and his knees wobbling as he held on to his daughter’s arm leaning on her for strength.
Amelia in response, smiled and patted her father’s arm. It almost felt as though they had switched positions with her acting as the father figure and her father acting like the scared daughter who was about to lose everything.
From where Blaze was standing, he occasionally stole glances at the father and daughter, impressed by the way his wife was coordinating herself. For the past three days, neither of them had rested and they seemed to be working as one voice. He couldn’t wait for the court proceeding to be over so that he could finally take his wife home and wrap her up in his arms for the rest of the day.
“You may all be seated. Thank you.” Judge Addams said in a calm and friendly voice, breaking the tension in the room.
As everyone gradually settled in, the courtroom door was suddenly pushed open, forcing everyone to turn backwards.
“Sorry…” Harriet, Desmond’s wife apologized and quietly closed the door behind her before hurrying over to take a seat behind her brother-in-law. She was dressed in a simple dress with no makeup and no jewelry almost as if she was mourning. Her eyes were red and slightly swollen as if she had cried on her way down to the courthouse.
The Judge stared curiously as the gloomy-looking woman hurried to get a seat. He could tell that she was related to one of the accused and he almost felt sorry for her.
“Who invited her?” Amelia turned to look at the two older men seated behind her. She had clearly made her stance about not getting any other family member involved in the process to avoid drama.
“I’m sorry Amelia.” One of the old men popularly called Uncle Lazarus apologized. “She wouldn’t stop calling me and asking me questions. So I may have told her that today was the court proceeding.”
“You may have told her or you invited her,” Amelia said between gritted teeth, knowing how much Harriet loved her husband and would do anything to plead his case.
“I hope I’m not intruding,” Harriet said, stopping the old man from having to explain himself any further. She sat down beside her husband’s paternal uncle, a smile of appreciation tugging on her lips as she patted him on the hand before turning to face Amelia
“Hello, Amelia.”
“Hi, Aunt Harriet.” Amelia did her best to sound calm.
“Today’s proceeding is going to be very swift because I’ve been reliably informed that the accused have pleaded guilty to their crimes for a lesser sentencing. Is that right prosecuting counsel?” The judge asked looking up from the documents before him.
“Yes, Your Honour.” The prosecuting lawyer replied standing up.
“Very well, let’s make this process snappy. Bring in the accused.”
“Yes, Your Honour.” The court police officer left to carry out the judge’s instruction.
“Amelia, please don’t be mad at Uncle Lazarus. I wanted to be here for my husband.” Harriet apologized, fresh tears falling from her eyes.
“It’s fine.” Amelia turned her head forward, trying her best to remain calm. She almost regretted sitting beside her dad, knowing how overbearing Harriet could be.

“You look really beautiful by the way. I’m sure your husband is taking good care of you.”
Amelia gritted her teeth.
“Thanks.”
“Have you spoken to your uncle since that night?” Harriet asked leaning closer to Amelia’s ear.
“I have,” Amelia replied drily.
“I know he’s sorry for what he did. He’s a good man though misguided sometimes. His children really miss him. The bed is cold without him. I’m sure you will understand.”
Amelia’s hands balled into fists, her fingernails digging into her flesh, as rage coursed through her veins like an angry viper.
The senator seeing how angry his daughter was quickly responded in her place.
“Harriet, please remain calm and wait for the judge to read out the sentences. I’m sure everything will be fine in the end.”
“I hope so because I cannot live without my husband. Three days away from home is already a nightmare for me and the children.” Harriet sniffled, dabbing at her flowing tears with her handkerchief.
Amelia chuckled bitterly but didn’t say anything. She tilted her head backwards in her husband’s direction, wishing she could vaporize from her seat and be with him.
Blaze who had been staring at his wife all this while could tell she was no longer comfortable seated beside her father. When she turned back to look at him, it only confirmed his worries that she was being harassed by her so-called family members.
Without giving it much thought, he stood up and walked over to where his wife and her father were seated.
“I hope you don’t mind me joining you,” Blaze said, he’s loving gaze on his wife without looking at the senator who was alarmed by his presence.
Before Amelia could cough out a reply, Blaze took his seat beside her taking her free right hand into his and stroking it lovingly.
“I’m here for you.”
Amelia was enamoured by his action. It struck every chord of warmth in her heart, making her float on a cloud of happiness. A heavenly smile slowly replaced her frown, causing her cheeks to turn beet red.
“Thank you.”
“We are in this together,” Blaze said smoothly before casting a vicious warning glance at the woman harassing his wife.
Harriet and the two old man quickly looked the other way afraid of being burnt alive by the handsome devil’s gaze.
Judith chuckled but didn’t say anything.
The senator kept his firm hold on Amelia’s left hand as if he wanted to pull her away from her husband. This made Amelia laugh in our hearts. It was almost as if her father and husband were fighting a cold war trying to gain her affection.
The sound of an opening door, followed by the rattling of chains and handcuffs forced. everyone to look forward.
All six accused, still dressed in the same party ware from the Thanksgiving family gathering, were escorted into the courtrooms in handcuffs.
At the sight of her husband who was looking a bit out of shape from loneliness and depression, Harriet let out a sorrowful cry.
“What have you people done to my baby?”
